Marc Jennings is Coveleigh s 20th president and, after 2 years as Treasurer and 4 years as President, he will be retiring from the Board on May 1, Four years ago, the scene at Coveleigh was not nearly as sunny as it will be this summer. Our 50-year-old pool was leaking into the Sound and needed to be immediately replaced. The estimated cost was unaffordable. Marc was serving as Treasurer of the Board, and was asked to step up to take over as our President. With strong leadership skills, financial prowess, and inestimable hours and dedication, Marc delivered our state of the art, heated pool on time and on (revised) budget. No one can truly appreciate the time, commitment and effort Marc has dedicated to our Club. In addition to the pool, Marc is responsible for the renovated Tiki Bar, the sport court, the refurbished tennis circle, to name a few of the many projects completed during his tenure. The Club is financially healthy, the membership is thriving, management is comprised of a combination of talented senior staff and innovative new comers, and the Board is strong. Coveleigh is a better place as a result of Marc s leadership. We thank him, and wish him a very relaxing summer enjoying the fruits of his labors!

I want to express what an honor it is to have the opportunity to be part of another exciting year at the Coveleigh Club. Spring tennis is finally here and we have so much to look forward to.

I would also like to welcome two new additions to Coveleigh s tennis staff.

2 I want to express what an honor it is to have the opportunity to be part of another exciting year at the Coveleigh Club. Spring tennis is finally here and we have so much to look forward to. Our accomplishments last year were due to the efforts of our great tennis pros; Paolo Lotti, Polina Ivanova and Alex Yuille will be returning to the Club this year. I would also like to welcome two new additions to Coveleigh s tennis staff. Bruno Savi Teaching Professional and Touring Pro Bruno is an international tennis professional from Brazil with a vast experience as a player and as a teaching professional. He played tennis on the professional level since 2002, even though he just played only two full years because he preferred to play college tennis and continue his education. Bruno played one year at Auburn University before transferring to the University of West Florida where he played his remaining three years winning two national championships and being awarded an All-American athlete. After finishing his undergraduate program, he took the assistant tennis coach position at UWF winning another national title for the Argos. Tennis is Bruno's passion and he loves coaching and sharing his experience with his students. He works hard on and off the court, he has a great personality and he is grateful to do what he loves most. Polina Mutel Pro Shop Assistant and Teaching Professional Polina is originally from Yaroslavl, Russia. She came to the United States in 2015 to start her academic studies in Business Administration at Northwestern State University of Louisiana. As a junior player, Polina was ranked among the top players in Russia and her strong junior tennis background earned her a full tennis scholarship on the college team. Polina's first tennis teaching experience began in the summer of 2014 as a junior tennis instructor at the tennis club Nat Dachnaya in Russia, where she continued to work every summer until Polina is very happy to be part of the Coveleigh tennis team this summer, she will help in the Pro Shop and she will be available to teach tennis to juniors and adult players. Spring is almost here and it is time to get ready for another exciting year of tennis at Coveleigh! The weather is getting warmer, the rain is clearing and spring time is just around the corner. With spring comes Coveleigh Tennis. Get ready, the tennis courts and the Pro Shop will officially open Monday, April 23rd. Adult tennis starts the week of April 23rd with all the ladies teams practice sessions and other adult clinics. The men s team tryout and first practice is Saturday, April 28th from 3:30pm to 4:30pm. April 23rd starts the Junior Spring Tennis, an 8-week long tennis instruction program for kids of all levels. Hurry up and sign up your kids, we still accept registrations until April 22nd, but don t wait the last minute, some of the clinics may be sold out. Each year the Coveleigh Tennis Committee hosts a wide variety of exiting, full-filled tennis event for our members. We encourage member participation among players of ALL level. No matter your skill level, Coveleigh tennis events offer a great opportunity to meet other members and have a great time, while at the same time, improving your game. 3 Spring is here and that means summer is just around the corner. We are pleased to announce that our entire coaching staff will return for the 2018 season with Head Coach Adam King, Diving Coach Amy Bryan and our Assistant Swim Coaches, John Freeman and Kerby Lewis! We look forward to seeing everyone at registration on Saturday, April 14th from 9am-12pm in the Carriage House. Metro Swim Shop will be on site selling our team suit and taking orders for personalized swim caps and the team fleece. Metro Swim Shop will be setting up a link to sell suits on line towards the end of April. If you cannot make it to registration day, you may go to the Coveleigh website, click on Pool & Waterfront/Swim & Dive and find a link to the registration forms. Registration forms can be scanned and ed to Nicole Kujawski at nicoleparenteau@gmail.com. As soon as the 2018 calendar is released we will notify everyone. The Coveleigh Book Club is in its 14th year and looks forward to reading many more memorable novels. Our book for March is, Pachinko by Min Jin Lee and we will be meeting on April 10th at 7:00 in Coveleigh s front parlor. The story, Pachinko, is a multigenerational story about a Korean family, beginning with Japanese-occupied Korea in the early 20th century, then in Japan before World War II through the late 1980s. It explores the complex relationship between the Japanese and the Koreans living in Japan. This immigrant Korean community faced harsh discrimination and ill-treatment for generations. Pachinko is a mechanical pin-ball game that is played on slot-machines called Pachinkos in thousands of parlors throughout Japan. This multibillion dollar business has been dominated by the Koreans since they were unable to find legal employment. Although viewed as criminal and not respectable, the pachinko parlors provided the Koreans with both jobs and the opportunity to accumulate wealth. Pachinko is a book worth reading and one that you will not soon forget! It s not snowing, it s July and you re wearing shorts and flip flops. Your kids are off to Coveleigh Camp, and life couldn t be better. From 9am to 3pm, for one, two, or six weeks, you know your kids will be safe, happy, splashy, silly, loved, and entertained by Coveleigh s top-shelf lineup of veteran counselors. It s no secret why so many Coveleigh counselors come back year after year. And why our camp is typically fully staffed for the NEXT year by October following the end of camp (it s true!) It s because of your kids. It s also because Ellie & Bret Coveleigh s long-time Camp Directors do so much all year long to make camp run so effortlessly every summer. Coming soon! See you there. Your 2018 Coveleigh Summer Camp Advisory Committee Congratulations to long time member Lloyd Emanuel, who will be honored with his induction into the Eastern Tennis Hall of Fame on April 28th, in a ceremony at the New York Athletic Club on Central Park South in Manhattan. Lloyd s election is based on his many years as a player, coach, tournament director and dedicated Eastern volunteer. Please join us in congratulating Lloyd on his outstanding honor.

5 Sponsor and Sponsorship Letter As part of our ongoing effort to illuminate our membership process, we wanted to shed some light on the sponsor s role and the sponsorship letter which are very significant considerations in the candidate evaluation process. We require sponsors because we want to make sure that whomever we invite to join Coveleigh are people that their sponsors know very well, believe would fit in well Coveleigh s culture and who would enjoy their company at the Club for years to come. Sponsorship affirms the understanding that the candidate is joining a private club and lets them know that we take quite seriously whom we allow to become part of the Coveleigh family. Sponsorship also assures that a new member will have an immediate common bond with at least two current members and that connection will make them feel more welcome, transition easily into the club and provide an immediate sense of belonging, which are critical factors in member enjoyment and retention. The membership and admission committees expect the sponsoring members to be well acquainted with the candidates but also be responsible for guiding them throughout the sponsorship process and, if admitted to the Club, during the Associate Membership period as well. Each sponsor needs to provide a sponsorship letter, independently drafted, outlining support for the candidate. The primary sponsor letter is required before a prospective member can attend a candidate reception and both sponsorship letters are required before the family interview. The sponsor letter content should comply with the membership committee guidelines, which are as follows: How the Sponsor came to know the Candidate How long he or she has known the Candidate and in what capacity Information on why the Candidate is interested in joining the Club Information on why the sponsor believes the Candidate is compatible with the Club s culture and values Comment on the candidates character What the Sponsor will do to help the Candidate, if offered membership, become engaged with the Club and its membership The handbook and member section of the website outline the Candidate sponsorship process in detail and it is recommended sponsors read through the section to familiarize themselves ahead of recommending a Candidate. You may also reach out to the Membership Governors or committee members if you have any questions.

9 March 15th was all about the ladies of Coveleigh and their friends! During the afternoon the 3rd annual Ladies Who Lunch event was a sold out success. Ladies spent the afternoon enjoying the champagne bar, scrumptious buffet, raffle prizes and of course shopping! Coveleigh hosted 22 vendors selling beautiful merchandise. The evening transitioned to Girls Night Out and the ladies took over the Club! Shopping, dining, cocktails, raffles and conversation dominated. It was a wonderful day and truly showcased our beautiful Coveleigh.
