2 NorCal Profiles 5 Seminar Summaries Kirk Anderson - BeFer Athletes Make BeFer Tennis Players - on court Athlete development begins in the warm-up. Your warm-up ac<vi<es set the tone for your prac<ce. Learn to use this to use crea<ve and meaningful ac<vi<es to develop agility, balance, coordina<on, speed, and strength. This session will demonstrate numerous ways to develop athle<c skills and improve team dynamics during a fun and ac<ve warm-up period without laps or calisthenics. Kirk Anderson - CharacterisGcs of Great Coaches - classroom Great coaches connect and inspire their athletes and guide them along the path to achieve their dreams. Coaches will learn the 15 characteris<cs of the most effec<ve coaches and understand why these characteris<cs are the most compelling. This session will help you iden<fy and improve the strengths that will make you a memorable and inspira<onal coach to players at any skill level. Ken DeHart - Five ExciGng Games for Strategy, TacGcs and Mental Toughness for all levels These five large group games have many varia<ons you can use for tac<cs and compe<<on. All drills teach tac<cs, movement and mental toughness for any level player. Pros are invited to par<cipate on court in the presenta<on. Sean Drake - The Body ConnecGon: How your Body Effects the Serve, Forehand, and Backhand - classroom We will address TPI s philosophy of how the body effects the tennis stroke. He will highlight both three body screens that iden<fy the most common limita<ons that effect tennis strokes and several stroke characteris<cs caused by physical limita<ons. Finally, he will summarize what the tennis, health, and fitness professional can do about these issues. Michael Friedman - Game Plan - on court A synthesis of 50 plus years of teaching experience and afending USPTA conferences and specialty courses for 30 years. Using an on-court demonstra<on to help develop a basic strategy that can be taught to all levels based on ideas from Bollei<eri to DeHart, from Chris Bradley to John Yandell, as Bradley puts it..."stealing from one expert is plagiarism, stealing from many is research!" Michele Krause - Cardio Tennis: Tennis class or group fitness class? - classroom How to create a community and culture. AFendees will leave this course understanding the brand, brand afributes and language of Cardio Tennis, being on the Cuang edge heart rate technology and why you need to be a part of it and the educa<on pathway, pricing and reaching the poten<al of the program. John O Sullivan - Developing a Champion's Mindset - classroom Many people want to be on the podium and perform their very best, but they are not willing to do the lifle things to get there. This talk uses examples of elite athletes across a variety of sports, outlines a pathway to get 1% befer every day, develop great habits, embrace the struggle of failure, and turn these sports skills into life skills. John O Sullivan - Leadership Secrets of the World's Best Coaches - classroom Tradi<onal coaching educa<on is hyper-focused on the X s and O s of coaching, but this is only a very small part of leadership. This workshop is a call to be a mentor coach, to understand the impact of your words and ac<ons, build strong team culture, and to become a befer teacher and a person of posi<ve significance for your players. 3 NorCal Profiles 6 Speakers Kirk Anderson is one of eleven tennis professionals in the world cer>fied as a Master Professional by both the USPTA and PTR. He has a Bachelor s degree in Physical Educa>on and a Master s degree in Exercise Science from Western Michigan University. While he was the Director of Coaching Educa>on for the USTA over 100,00 people par>cipated in on-court workshops he directed. Kirk has published dozens of tennis and coaching ar>cles and has wriden fourteen books on tennis. His honors include the Interna>onal Tennis Hall of Fame Educa>on Merit Award, the Person of the Year by Racquet Sports Industry, the PTR and USPTA Professional of the Year. ScoF Borowiak - As a member of the USPTA since 1984 and a winner of the USPTA Seminar Contest in 1996, Scod has become a natural spokesman for his profession. He has presented on-court presenta>ons a both local and na>onal USPTA events. Ac>ng as emcee for our annual USPTA NorCal Legends Night for the past 11 years he has interviewed some of the sports best. In 1981 he established Scod Borowiak Tennis and Golf Tours and is now running a successful travel business. Scod is currently the Director of Tennis at the Moraga Valley Country Club in Orinda where he was the catalyst for the recent construc>on of two HarTru hydro courts. Ken DeHart is the Director of Player Development at The Almaden Valley Athle>c Club in San Jose, Ca. He is a USPTA Master Professional and a PTR Interna>onal Master Professional and a USTA High-Performance Coach. Ken is a member of the Wilson Premier Advisory Staff. Among his many awards are two >me PTR Interna>onal Pro of the Year, four >me USPTA Divisional Pro of the Year, and three->me USPTA Career Development Award Winner. He is a frequent speaker at industry events including the Australian Open Coaches Conference, PTR Wimbledon Conference, Italian Coaches Conference and the U.S Open Coaches Conference. Michael Friedman has been teaching tennis for 52 years. For the past seven years he has been the Junior Coordinator at the Tiburon Peninsula Club.Michael served on the Northern California USPTA Board of Directors for seven years and was the USPTA NorCal Division President in 2000 and He was honored with the NorCal USPTA s 2002 Professional of the Year and received the USPTA Life>me Achievement Award in He has been a speaker at many USTA high school coaches workshops and USPTA Divisional and Na>onal Conven>ons. He is a contribu>ng writer for the website tennisplayer.net. Michael has been on the Wilson Advisory Staff since Sean Drake is the TPI (Titleist Performance Ins>tute) Performance Director. He received his bachelor s degree at Florida State University where he was on the track and field team. He received his Masters in Sports Health Science with an emphasis in Sports Injury Management as well as his Doctorate in Chiroprac>c from Life University in Atlanta. As the Vice President of the American Tennis Health & Fitness associa>on Dr. Drake has partnered with the USPTA to expand TPI s worldwide health & fitness cer>fica>on program to include the sport of tennis.
4 NorCal Profiles 7 Speakers Michele Krause is the Na>onal Cardio Tennis Program Manager and Speakers Team Director working for the Tennis Industry Associa>on. Since the rollout of Cardio Tennis in 2005, there are now 1,800 official US Cardio Tennis sites and the program has spread to over 30 countries. She is a USPTA and PTR tennis professional who managed tennis facili>es throughout the country for over 16 years.michele oversees the en>re Cardio Tennis program which includes the responsibility of day to day opera>ons: curriculum, event planning, training, and marke>ng. She is responsible for the 25 tennis professionals on the Na>onal Cardio Tennis Speakers Team and travels to many industry conven>ons, mee>ngs and events to provide ongoing educa>on on the Cardio Tennis program. Michele loves sharing her passion for tennis and fitness! John O Sullivan started the Changing the Game Project in 2012 auer two decades as a soccer player and coach on the youth, high school, college and professional level. He is the author of the #1 bestselling books Changing the Game: The Parents Guide to Raising Happy, High Performing Athletes, and Giving Youth Sports Back to our Kids and Is it Wise to Specialize? John s work has been featured in The Huffington Post, CNN.com, Outside Magazine, ESPN.com, Soccer America and numerous other publica>ons. For the last 21 years Bill has served as the Director of Tennis at the Bluegrass Yacht & Country Club. In his 30 years of work in the tennis industry, he coached college tennis for nine years with his players and teams reaching na>onal rankings, conference and regional >tles as well as three appearances at the Na>onal Championships. He has coached seven All American college players along with a host of juniors from around the globe to the college ranks.
