2 NorCal Profiles 5 Seminar Summaries Specialty Course - Physical Literacy for Teaching Pros - Kirk Anderson The young player today is spending an increasing amount of time in sedentary activities such as computer and video games. These players also lack free play, recess, and regular physical education. This course will show pros their new role of incorporating athletic development in their lessons and practices so that players can reach their full potential by developing agility, balance, coordination, strength, speed and stamina in a variety of fun and active exercises. How Feeding Can Make or Break Your Lessons or Practices - Sid Newcomb - on court This course takes a look at a variety of different kinds of feeding for group and private lessons. The art of feeding is an often neglected part of a professional's tennis development, however the importance of appropriate feeding can make or break a lesson. Handling Large Groups on Limited Courts - Kirk Anderson - on court The typical coach has a very complex and difficult job of conducting compelling practices with large numbers of players with different levels of experience and skill. This session will demonstrate the use of stations and partner drills to keep a large number of players active and engaged in meaningful and purposeful skill development drills. My Journey with the Positive Coaching Alliance - Carrie Zarraonandia - classroom Carrie will share how she has dealt with common coaching challenges, managed parents, and elevated her athletes performance using the principles of The Positive Coaching Alliance. Working Lunch with Setteo - classroom Hear about our new web platform and what it can do for you and your program. Teaching Doubles with a Ball Machine- Stan Oley - on court Attendees will see how to use a ball machine to teach ball recognition and the variety of shots needed to finish the point A Vast Left Wing Conspiracy: Teaching Left-handers - Joel Drucker - on court Tennis historian Joel Drucker explores ways instructors can best teach left-handed students -- and also help right-handers figure out how to deal with them. Alternate Play Formats for Fun and Profit - Chuck Gill - on court This interactive seminar will explain how you and your facility can benefit from alternate/short formats for social and competitive play. While there will always be a place for traditional competitive tennis matches, current consumers do not always have time to commit several days to tournament play, so alternate formats can be an excellent option. The Six Athletic Skills in Tennis Part 1 - David Bailey - classroom David will introduce his tennis specific footwork training method called The Bailey Method with a video demonstrating the concept of "Contact Moves" A New Teaching Method - John Yandell - on court How to convey technical information through imagery and feeling on the court to produce high level strokes. Using high speed video and pro models as part of the process, including how to do this with an iphone. Teaching Pros: Are You Making These Mistakes Coaching 3.5 Women - Brent Abel - on court Are we often using terminology and teaching certain tactics in our 3.5 women s doubles coaching sessions that inhibits their improvement? Brent explores what REALLY helps and what hinders our players. The Six Athletic Skills in Tennis Part 2- David Bailey - on court David will demonstrate on court progressive shadow and hitting drills based around the athletic skills of pivoting, shifting, lunging, transferring, spinning the hips and multi-directional hopping.
3 NorCal Profiles 6 Chuck Gill Chuck Gill is currently President of the USPTA National Board and represents the association at all industry functions. He is the Director of Sports at the Ibis Country Club where he oversees all aspects of the club's tennis, fitness, spa and aquatics operations. He also has been active in the USPTA, serving on the Florida Division's board of directors between He served as President of the Florida Division in He is also a USTA volunteer where he serves on the board of the USTA Florida Section and on the the USTA national Adult Competition Committee. In 2012 Chuck was chosen to join the "USTA National Tennis Center Professional Advisory Staff", a group of 20 teaching pros who provide their expertise in helping with the US Open fan experience each year in New York. In addition, he is a member of the Florida Chapter of CMAA and actively attends both national and regional education on trends in the private club industry. He has accumulated over 100 hours of educational credits. David Bailey David has been teaching tennis specific fitness and footwork for the past 30 years! He invented the Bailey Method with a DVD/manual on teaching footwork and balance in tennis using cue words, shadow tennis, fed and live ball. He is the inventor of the Tennis Blast DVD and manual on tennis strength, flexibility, aerobic conditioning and footwork. He was the Fitness Director at the Chris Evert Tennis Academy, U.S.A and has served as Fitness and Footwork advisor to over 20 Grand Slam Professional Players including Monica Seles, Jelena Dokic, Vince Spadea, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, and Johanna Konta. Carrie Zarraonandia Carrie grew up in Southern California playing pick up games of baseball, football and tag at her local public park. Her mother then signed her up for group tennis lessons. At the University of California at Davis she helped her team win a national title as well as being voted an All-American. She battled her way to seven USTA national championships as well as a number one ranking in the 35 s age group category. As a coach she was elected to the Marin County Athletic League Hall of Fame as the Head Coach of the Redwood High School Boy s Tennis Team. She was recently honored by the Positive Coaching Alliance as Bay Area Double-Goal Coach winner and national finalist. Carrie is a 30- year member of the USPTA, holding the Pro Elite status. She has taught three of her five children to play tennis and helped them compete and enjoy the sport. Carrie currently coaches at the Rafael Racquet Club in San Rafael, California. Her passion for sports, competition and fair play has drawn her to become a PCA trainer. 4 NorCal Profiles 7 Brent Abel Born in Berkeley and practically raised at the Berkeley Tennis Club, Brent has enjoyed a 45+ year tennis teaching career. He retired from full time club teaching in 2005 after serving as the Tennis Director & Head Professional at the Cal Club in San Francisco. Since then Brent has focused his teaching efforts to over 17,000 worldwide students online through his website WebTennis.com. Brent s main focus at WebTennis is his unique weekly What s The Right Shot? instructional series. Brent was a self taught player and teacher until he had the good fortune to work with Tom Stow in the early 1980s for 18 months. Brent credits Stow for his tennis teaching system and his seven national USA age group titles as a player. Brent & his wife Mai have won 5 national USA Husband-Wife titles in the past 5 years and are currently ranked #2 nationally in the Combined 100 age group category. They have 3 daughters and split their time between their home in Moraga and their second home at the Mission Hills CC in Rancho Mirage. Joel Drucker Oakland-based Joel Drucker has writing about tennis for 35 years. His work has appeared in a variety of print and broadcast outlets, including Tennis Magazine, Tennis Week, CBS, HBO and Tennis Channel. With Tennis Channel he has been the network s story editor for 38 of the last 40 Grand Slam events, as well as working on the network s many documentary and feature projects. Drucker s first book, Jimmy Connors Saved My Life, was published in In 2016 he was named an historian-at-large for the International Tennis Hall of Fame. PARKING AT STANFORD Parking is free on Saturday and Sunday. Paid parking is available on weekdays in the Track House and Galvez lots near the Taube Tennis Stadium. Kirk Anderson Kirk Anderson is one of eleven tennis teaching professionals in the world to be certified as a Master Professional by the Professional Tennis Registry and United States Professional Tennis Association. He has a Bachelor s degree in Physical Education and a Master s degree in Exercise Science from Western Michigan University. During the time he was the Director of Coaching Education at the USTA, over 100,000 people participated in oncourt workshops he directed. He was the project manager for course development for the Coach Youth Tennis online course which over 70,000 coaches have completed to date. He recently developed two online courses for high school coaches; one with the National Federation of High School Associations and a second for the USTA. Anderson has published dozens of tennis and coaching articles and has written fourteen books on tennis. His honors include the International Tennis Hall of Fame Education Merit Award, the Person of the Year by Racquet Sports Industry, the Professional Tennis Registry and United States Professional Tennis Professional of the Year and the Western Michigan University Alumni Honor Academy. John Yandell John is the founder and editor of Tennisplayer.net.digital magazine. He is a pioneer in high speed filming and analysis of professional tennis and in their applications in teaching and coaching. John has worked directly with Grand Slam champions including John Mcenroe and Justine Henin, as well as tour coaches of elite players like Novak Djokoic. He has also done analysis for dozens of elite college and junior players, and hundreds of players at the club level. The John Yandell Tennis School is located in San Francisco, California.
5 NorCal Profiles 8 Scott Borowiak As a member of the USPTA since 1984, and a winner of the USPTA Seminar Contest in 1996, Scott has become a natural spokesman for his profession. Acting as emcee for our annual USPTA NorCal Legends night for the past 12 years he has interviewed some of the sport s best. In 1981 he established Scott Borowiak Tennis and Golf Tours and is now running a successful travel business in addition to serving as the Director of Tennis at the Moraga Valley Country Club in Orinda. Sid Newcomb Sid Newcomb is the USPTA National Tester. Newcomb was the Director of Tennis at Peninsula Community Center (PCC) in Redwood City, California from Prior to that he played on the ATP Satellite Tour and worked at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy where he was the European Academy Director for seven years. While attending John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Ark., Newcomb was nationally ranked in both singles and doubles. He continues to play competitive tennis, being named the USTA NorCal Senior player of the year seven times and reaching a USTA No. 3 national ranking in 2012 in Father/ Son Doubles with his oldest son who is also a USPTAcertified Professional. In 2015 he was named the USPTA NorCal Pro of the Year. His wife, Linda, and their five children are all involved in tennis. Stan Oley Stan, a USPTA Master Professional, is employed by Playmate Ball Machines as their Product Marketing Specialist. Stan is the founder of FBT60. (Fit By Tennis in 60 Days). FBT60 is a tennis/fitness program combining nutrition and a series of ball machine drills. Stan was named 2016 Florida USPTA Pro of the Year. During his 30 years as a teaching professional (29 years USPTA Certified), he was a teaching professional at John s Island Club in Vero Beach, FL, the head professional at the home of the Miami Open Championships, The International Tennis Center in Key Biscayne, Fl, and a teaching professional at the Eau Gallie Yacht Club in Indian Harbour Beach, FL. He has also published drills and articles for USPTA Addvantage Magazine, Tennis Week, and PTR Tennis Pro Magazine and has been featured on the Tennis Channel s One Minute Clinic, His full length DVD Rip Your Returns Like the Pros, recently won Honor of Distinction at a recent communications awards event.
