NCAA Sweet 16 Appearance Duke was named the No. 1 seed in the West region, marking the 12th time the Blue Devils have received a top seed. It is the 10th time in the past 14 seasons the Blue Devils were a No. 1 seed. The team started with a second round victory over Hampton, defeating the Pirates with 10 different players logging over 10 minutes played in the game. Next up was a battle with Michigan that came down to the wire with a missed shot at the buzzer by the Wolverines that sent Duke on to the Sweet 16. It was the 26th time in school history the Blue Devils reached the Sweet 16 and third straight season. Duke led Arizona at the half, 44-38, but a 20-4 run by the Wildcats in the second half helped Arizona end the Blue Devils run. Third Straight 30-Win Season The Blue Devils fi nished the year with a 32-5 overall record, the 12th 30-win season in school history. The 32 wins are tied for sixth most in a single season by a Duke squad. The Blue Devils have won 30 or more games in three straight seasons, becoming just the sixth program in NCAA Division I history to win at least 30 games in three consecutive years. Over the course of the last three seasons Duke has won 97 total games, ranking as the third most over a three-year span in school history. It is the fi fth time the Blue Devils have won 95 or more games over a three-year span. Three Straight 30+ Win Seasons Team Years Wins by Yr Wins Kentucky , 35, Kentucky , 36, Montana State , 36, North Carolina , 36, Duke , 35, UCLA , 30, Coach K Reaches 900 Wins Head coach Mike Krzyzewski tallied career win No. 900 with a victory over Michigan in the third round of the NCAA Tournament in Charlotte, N.C. He became just the second coach in NCAA history to reach 900 wins and is now two shy of tying coaching legend Bob Knight as the winningest coach in NCAA history. During the season, Krzyzewski passed two coaching legends on the all-time wins list. He was named to the fi rst team by the Associated Press, USBWA, NABC State Farm Coaches and John R. Wooden Award. Smith averaged 20.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game to become Duke s fi rst consensus fi rst team All-American since 2006 when J.J. Redick and Shelden Williams each were on a selection of fi rst teams. Kyle Singler was also chosen as an All- American, being named to the second team of the NABC State Farm Coaches team. He also received honorable mention from the Associated Press after averaging 16.9 points and 6.8 rebounds per game last season. Four Receive ACC Accolades In addition to being named ACC Player of the Year, Nolan Smith was selected to the All-ACC fi rst team as well as both the media and coaches ACC All-Defensive team. Smith was joined on the All-ACC fi rst team by Kyle Singler. The duo became the 17th set of teammates at Duke to earn fi rst team All-ACC accolades. Singler was on the fi rst team for the second straight season and is just the fourth player in Duke history to earn All-ACC honors in all four seasons. Mason Plumlee received honorable mention recognition for All-ACC after ranking fi fth in rebounding and sixth in blocked shots during the regular season. Plumlee, Singler and Ryan Kelly were chosen to the Academic All-ACC team. It is the seventh time in school history Duke has placed three or more players on the list and 24th time it has had multiple selections. Another Undefeated Home Slate Cameron Indoor Stadium continued to be a home court advantage for Duke, as the Blue Devils went undefeated at home with a 17-0 record for the second straight season. Duke extended its home court winning streak to 36 games, which ranks as the longest streak in the nation and third-longest streak in school history. The 17 home wins also matched the school record set by the team. It was the 16th time since that the Blue Devils have not lost a game at home. The Blue Devils also extended their NCAAleading non-conference home winning streak to 86 games. During the careers of seniors Kyle Singler and Nolan Smith, the Blue Devils went 65-2 at home, setting school records for most home wins and highest winning percentage by class. 3 MEDIA GUIDE Duke Earns No. 1 Seed Duke earned a No. 1 seed in the West Region in 2011, marking the 10th time in the past 14 seasons (12th time overall) it has accomplished that feat. The Blue Devils previously earned No.1 seeds in 1986, 1992, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006 and Since the seeding process inception in 1979, Duke s 12 No. 1 seeds are the second-most in the NCAA. Since the field expanded to 64 teams (now 68), Duke s 12 No. 1 seeds are the most by any school in the country. High Scoring Tandem Nolan Smith and Kyle Singler combined to average an ACC-high 37.5 points per game (fourth-highest duo at Duke), including 39.2 ppg. in league play in 2011.The tandem combined for point games and fi ve 30-point games last season. Smith fi nished his career with 92 career double-fi gure scoring games, including 10 or more points in 69 of the last 75 contests. Smith has an ACC-best point scoring games and four 30-point efforts. He also ranked among the conference leaders in assists (5.1 apg.), fi eld goal percentage (.458), free throw percentage (.813) and minutes (34.0 mpg.). Singler fi nished his career as the only player in ACC history to record 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 300 offensive rebounds, 250 threepointers, 200 assists, 100 blocks and 100 steals.
