The Lady Toppers take on Incarnate Word and host Missouri State on Friday before facing Wisconsin- Milwaukee and Oral Roberts on Saturday. LAST TIME OUT The Lady Toppers slid past Belmont on Tuesday night in the team s home opener, sweeping the Bruins by scores of 25-23, 25-16, Junior Noelle Langenkamp and freshman Sydney Engle led WKU offensively with eight kills each while both had a team-high three blocks at the net. Freshman Jessica Lucas posted 29 assists while tabbing a stat in each of the other categories, including eight digs, six kills, two blocks and one service ace. Sophomore Georgia O Connell almost tied her career high in digs, as the libero notched 17 digs in front of a rowdy home crowd. AGAINST THE TOURNEY FIELD WKU will meet up with Incarnate Word and Missouri State for the first time in program history. Saturday s opponents in Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Oral Roberts will be the team s only familiar foes, holding a 2-0 record against the Panthers and 1-1 versus Oral Roberts. Though she is active and lively, Harlie has been through a lot after being diagnosed with a brain tumor behind her eyes in the spring of Since then, Harlie has had CT scans, MRIs, surgeries, chemotherapy and more. With everything going on in her life, though, Harlie has kept a positive spirit. Harlie s positive spirit is now being spread throughout the WKU Volleyball program after the Lady Toppers and Harlie were joined by the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation (FOJ), a charitable, non-profit organization that strives to enhance and strengthen the support system built around children with pediatric brain tumors. Through the program, adopted children become part of the team and build unique friendships. Children also gain an incredible group of caring role models to look up to when they need the extra support. Harlie is now a Lady Topper. At every home game, she is with the team in the huddle and at introductions while she cheers with her family from the sidelines during the game. The team s secret weapon, she is a constant reminder to the WKU student-athletes and coaching staff to keep fighting no matter what stands in the way. While undergoing treatment, she was inspired by a large framed photo on the hospital wall of a joyful, young woman lacrosse player celebrating her team s NCAA championship. In 2005, two unrelated friends of the Murphy family told Northwestern University s Lacrosse coach about Jaclyn s story and asked them if they could help. The team promptly adopted Jaclyn as an honorary member. Jaclyn s strength, courage, relentless spirit and joy for life inspired everyone. The team began to play for Jaclyn and achieved a magical perfect season, winning Northwestern s first NCAA championship in 64 years. Just three years after the program started, Jaclyn even predicted the final score, 13-10, in the championship final. When Jaclyn was in the middle of the team s celebration, her parents realized that Jaclyn s relationship with the players - her adopted sisters - had a positive effect on her happiness and health. The Northwestern players knew that their relationship with Jaclyn had opened their eyes and hearts to a deeper appreciation for life. Soon afterward, Jaclyn shared a big dream with her father. She wanted other children with pediatric brain tumors to have similar experiences of being honorary team members. The Murphys understood that it is ultimately the love and support of others that gives people the inspiration and courage to get through this challenging journey. In 2005, Denis and Lynda Murphy started The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation (FOJ) to improve the quality of life for children with pediatric brain tumors and their families by pairing them with college and high school athletic teams. 3 Notes YOUNG STARTING LINEUP After graduating five seniors from the 2013 squad, the 2014 Lady Toppers have a lot of youth in their lineup, using three in the starting lineup over the first four games. Setter Jessica Lucas and outside hitters Alyssa Cavanaugh and Sydney Engle have each started the matches, adding immediate contributions to the team s efforts. It is one of the youngest lineups WKU has put on the court since 2010 when setter Melanie Stutsman started every match, outside hitter Paige Wessel started 21-of-36 matches and defensive specialist Ashley Potts started 20-of-36 matches. Since 2005, only seven Lady Toppers in their first season on The Hill started every match. O CONNELL NAMED TO UNLV INVITATIONAL ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Sophomore Georgia O Connell was named to the UNLV Invitational All-Tournament Team after posting 43 digs through the three tourney games. The Louisville, Ky., native averaged 4.78 digs per set after tallying double-digit digs in each game, including a career-high 18 against Cal State Northridge. It was O Connell s first starts as libero, taking over for three-time SBC Defensive Player of the Year Ashley Potts. HUDSON ENTERS YEAR 20 WKU head coach Travis Hudson enters his 20th season at the helm of Lady Topper volleyball, as he becomes the longest tenured coach on The Hill. Hudson went from a 7-26 record during his first season in 1995 to producing seven teams that went to the NCAA Tournament along with 10 Sun Belt Conference regular-season championships and five SBC Tournament titles. A WKU alum himself, Hudson has coached 59 All-Conference honorees, including 35 named to the first team, along with 11 AVCA All-America selections. RETURNING THE NATION S TOP HITTERS For the fourth-straight year, WKU ranked in the top 10 of hitting percentage in the NCAA, finishing third in 2013 with a.312 mark. With Noelle Langenkamp and Heather Boyan back at the net, WKU returns two of the nation s top hitters. With size, athleticism and skill in many different areas, the five Lady Topper recruits each come to Bowling Green from a winning background with a ton of big-game experience. WKU TABBED SECOND IN C-USA PRESEASON POLL Voted on by the league s 13 volleyball coaches, WKU was selected to finish second in the Conference USA Preseason Poll.
