Series: WKU leads Series streak: WKU won 2 Last meeting: WKU 3-1 (9/10/99 in Nashville, Tenn.) It will be the 31st meeting in the series between the Lady Toppers and Lady Govs, continuing the longest head-to-head series in WKU volleyball annals. Western (7-2) enters Tuesday s match looking to make a bit of history. A victory over Austin Peay would give the Lady Toppers their best 10-match start ever, surpassing the 7-3 debuts turned in on five previous occasions. However, WKU will have to bounce back from a loss in its final match at the Popcorn Classic, a 3-1 setback to Mid-American Conference member Ohio last Saturday. Junior left-side hitter Tara Thomas capped a solid weekend with a team-high 21 kills and freshman defensive specialist Tracy May continued her sparkling early-season play, logging a season-high 21 digs. Thomas was also named to the all-tournament team, the second time in less than a week she received such an honor. Austin Peay (4-3) will provide a stern test for the Lady Toppers, especially with Tuesday s match being played in Clarksville. The Lady Govs are 34-6 at the Dunn Center over the last four seasons, including a 3-1 mark this year. APSU will also be looking to return to its winning ways, after dropping two of three matches last weekend at the Powerade Panther Volleyball Invitational in Milwaukee. The Lady Govs downed Portland, 3-2, in their opener, but later fell to Wyoming (3-0) and Wisconsin- Milwaukee (3-1). Setter Annie Glieber turned in three strong outings, posting two double-doubles and a triple-double in the two-day tournament. Glieber s performance should be quite familiar to Western, which has watched the Lady Govs senior record triple-doubles in each of her last two matches against the Lady Toppers. But she is not alone in the APSU arsenal. Although only a freshman, outside hitter Amy Walk has already made a big splash, leading Austin Peay in kills per game (2.65), hitting percentage (.338) and blocks per game (0.54). As a team, the Lady Govs are among the nation s top defensive units, averaging a whopping digs per game, including 163 digs in a five-game loss to UT Chattanooga on Sept. 6. Five APSU players are averaging better than three digs per game, led by Glieber s 4.04 dpg mark. Western owns a two-match winning streak against Austin Peay after downing the Lady Govs, 3-1 (15-10, 15-7, 11-15, 15-11), Sept. 10, 1999, at the Bruin Classic in Nashville. Kim Carpenter tallied 18 kills and Natalie Furry added 16 to lead four Western players with double-digit kills. In addition, Melissa Starck recorded a doubledouble with 11 kills and 11 digs for WKU. While the Lady Toppers hold a current edge in the all-time series, Austin Peay has the advantage in Clarksville. The Lady Govs have won the last two matches with Western at the Dunn Center and hold a 6-5 edge in contests played there. In fact, the Lady Toppers have not won in Clarksville since a 3-1 victory on Nov. 1, WHO S UP NEXT FOR THE LADY TOPPERS? Western Kentucky opens its final regular-season tournament of the season at 4 p.m. (CDT) Friday when it takes on Central Florida at the Raider Challenge in Dayton, Ohio. 2 Tara Thomas Named Sun Belt Player of the Week Junior left-side hitter Tara Thomas continues to pull in accolades during the early part of the 2000 season. On Tuesday, the Louisville native was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week for the first time in her career. In five matches last week, Thomas averaged 4.84 kills and 3.26 digs per game while recording three double-doubles and hitting a solid.301, leading Western Kentucky to three wins and a second-place finish at the Popcorn Classic in Valparaiso, Ind. She was also named to the all-tournament team at the Popcorn Classic, her second alltournament selection in less than a week (she was tabbed the MVP of the IUPUI Invitational Sept. 3). Thomas opened the week by rolling up a career-high 29 kills, adding 22 digs and two blocks in WKU s five-game loss to defending Conference USA champion Cincinnati Sept. 5. The 20/20 performance was the first by a Western player since Kim Carpenter and Andria Humpert both turned the trick against Morehead State on Oct. 13, Last weekend, the Assumption High School graduate led the Lady Toppers in kills in three of their four matches at the Popcorn Classic, notching doubledoubles against Valparaiso and Ohio. She also opened the tournament by hitting a sparkling.500 ( ) against Dartmouth. Quick Out of the Blocks For the third consecutive season, Western Kentucky has gotten off to a strong start, winning seven of its first nine matches. A victory Tuesday night at Austin Peay would give the Lady Toppers their best start ever after 10 matches, passing the 7-3 marks set five times previously. A solid debut usually means good things are ahead for Western. In the five seasons that the Lady Toppers opened at 7-3, they went on to post at least a.500 record, reaching the Sun Belt Tournament championship match twice and making the semifinals in four of the five campaigns. Here s a look at how WKU has fared after its early-season success: Year 10-match record Final record Sun Belt Conference finish Tournament runner-up Tournament semifinalist Tournament runner-up Tournament semifinalist Recapping the Popcorn Classic Western Kentucky won three of its four matches last weekend at the Popcorn Classic in Valparaiso, Ind. The Lady Toppers downed Dartmouth, Valparaiso and Kent State before falling to Ohio in their final match of the tournament. Junior leftside hitter Tara Thomas represented Western on the all-tournament team. WKU wasted little time in its tournament opener, dispatching Ivy League foe Dartmouth in 55 minutes, 3-0 (15-1, 15-3, 15-5). Thomas recorded a match-high 14 kills and hit.500, and junior middle hitter Jessica Willard contributed seven kills and a.417 hitting percentage. As a team, Western connected at a.430 clip, the fourth time this season it has hit better than 40 percent in a match. Defensively, the Lady Toppers limited DC to a.049 hitting ratio, the fourth time this year an opponent has posted a sub-.100 hitting mark. In the second match of the tournament, Western was tested, but slipped past Valparaiso, 3-1 (15-8, 15-4, 9-15, 15-7). Thomas rang up her third double-double in the last four matches, finishing with match-bests of 17 kills and 15 digs. Senior SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION AUSTIN PEAY (4-3) Nickname... Lady Govs Location... Western opened the second day of the tournament with a resounding 3-0 (15-7, 15-12, 15-7) win over Mid-American Conference foe Kent State. Willard drilled a match-high 16 kills and Thomas added 11 kills for the Lady Toppers. On defense, WKU limited the Golden Flashes to a.094 hitting percentage, sparked by a match-best 11 digs from senior left-side hitter Melissa Starck. The Lady Toppers closed out the tournament on a sour note, losing 3-1 (14-16, 15-4, 15-12, 15-7) to Ohio. Thomas turned in her fourth double-double of the season with 21 kills and 10 digs, and freshman defensive specialist Tracy May rolled up a season-high 21 digs for Western. The Lady Toppers hit a season-low.199 for the match and the Bobcats tied a WKU opponent season-high with 14 blocks. Some Landmark Performances Two Western Kentucky standouts reached major personal milestones in their Lady Topper careers during last weekend s Popcorn Classic in Valparaiso, Ind. Senior defensive specialist Beaven Hill tallied three digs Sept. 8 against Dartmouth, becoming the sixth player in school history to record 1,000 career digs. She now has 1,024 digs, placing her fifth on the WKU career digs chart. Senior left-side hitter Melissa Starck blasted eight kills Sept. 9 against Kent State to become just the fifth player in school history to record 1,000 career kills. It also makes her only the fifth Lady Topper to notch 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in her career. She currently has 1,231 digs (second in school annals) and 1,012 kills (fifth all-time at WKU). In addition, with 156 career service aces, Starck is just one behind Jamie Ritterskamp for the top spot in school history. High-Octane Offense Even though the season is only two weeks old, Western Kentucky has already made waves on a local, regional and national level for its offensive production. Through nine matches this season, the Lady Toppers are averaging a whopping kills per game while posting a sharp.305 hitting percentage. WKU has hit better than.300 in six of its nine contests this season, including a school-record.486 ratio against Mercer on Sept. 2. Western also notched a Sun Belt Conference-record 105 kills on Sept. 5 against defending Conference USA champion Cincinnati. What is equally impressive is the amount of balance in the Lady Topper offense this season. Three players are averaging better than 3.2 kills per game, led by junior left-side hitter Tara Thomas and her staggering 4.06 kpg average. In addition, four players with at least 100 swings have a hitting percentage of better than.300 for the season. Junior outside hitter Natalie Furry is tops in that department, connecting at a sparkling.390 clip. Passing Nails In volleyball terms, when a team is passing the ball well, it is said to be passing nails. In Western Kentucky s case, enough nails are being passed to build a small village. The Lady Toppers have committed just 31 reception errors in their first nine matches this season, averaging a tidy 1.0 reception errors per game. Furthermore, Western s two defensive specialists, senior Beaven Hill and freshman Tracy May, have combined to commit ony seven reception errors all season! The Defense Never Rests Not surprisingly, Western s solid passing game has translated into some strong defensive performances. The Lady Toppers are holding their opponents to a.166 hitting percentage, and two of their foes (Tennessee State and Ohio) finished with negative hitting ratios. In addition, WKU is averaging digs per game with five players tallying more than 1.5 dpg. These defensive efforts have been reflected on the scoreboard. The Lady Toppers yielded just seven points in their win over Mercer on Sept. 2, tying an 11-year-old school record for the fewest points allowed in a three-game match. Signed, Sealed and Delivered Dating back to the start of the 1998 season, Western Kentucky has posted a 2000 Lady Topper Volleyball Austin Peay Notes p. 3

Conference Call Western Kentucky is riding a nine-match winning streak against the Ohio Valley Conference, including a 3-0 win over Tennessee State on Sept. 2 at the IUPUI Invitational. Ironically, the last OVC team to get the better of the Lady Toppers was Tuesday s opponent Austin Peay, which won in four games in the 1997 season finale (Nov. 13). 20-Kill Club 29 Tara Thomas vs. Cincinnati (9/5) 27 Natalie Furry vs. Cincinnati (9/5) 21 Jessica Willard at IUPUI (9/3) Tara Thomas vs. Ohio (9/9) 20 Jessica Willard vs. Cincinnati (9/5) 20-Dig Club 22 Tara Thomas vs. Cincinnati (9/5) 21 Tracy May vs. Ohio (9/9) Double-Doubles 4 Tara Thomas (IUPUI, UC, VU, OU-2) 1 Natalie Furry (UC) Sara Noe (UC) Melissa Starck (UC) WKU Pushes Cincinnati To The Brink Western Kentucky treated its fans to a three-hour thriller, as the Lady Toppers lost a heartstopping 3-2 (11-15, 14-16, 15-12, 15-13, 18-16) verdict to defending Conference USA champion Cincinnati Sept. 5 at E.A. Diddle Arena. Western rolled up a Sun Belt Conference-record 105 kills in the match and equalled the school standard with 91 assists in the five-game epic. All told, five school marks were tied or broken with two others placing second in the WKU record books. Four Lady Toppers recorded doubledoubles in the match, led by junior left-side hitter Tara Thomas, who tallied a careerhigh 29 kills and 22 digs to notch WKU s first match since Oct. 13, Junior outside hitter Natalie Furry amassed a career-high 27 kills, 11 digs and hit a sparkling.458, and senior left-side hitter Melissa Starck chipped in with 17 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore setter Sara Noe expertly guided the Western offense all night, dishing out a career-high 85 assists, the second-highest total in school history, and adding a career-best 11 digs to record her first career double-double. Western Picked to Finish Third in Eastern Division of Sun Belt The Sun Belt Conference coaches continued to reward Western Kentucky for its strong finishes the last two seasons, placing them third in the Eastern Division in the 2000 SBC preseason poll released Aug. 22. WKU received 47 points, trailing only defending co-champions Arkansas-Little Rock and Arkansas State in the rankings. Louisiana Tech (34), Florida International (23), and Middle Tennessee (20) round out the Eastern Division. Sun Belt newcomer New Mexico State narrowly beat out Denver for the top spot in the Western Division, finishing with 67 points. Louisiana-Lafayette, New Orleans, North Texas and South Alabama complete the West lineup. Furry Represents Lady Toppers on Preseason All-Conference Squad Western Kentucky also found a place on the 2000 Sun Belt preseason all-conference team, as junior outside hitter Natalie Furry earned her way onto the squad for the second consecutive season. A 1999 all-sun Belt pick and a two-time all-sbc Tournament selection, Furry led the Lady Toppers with 353 kills last season and ranked second on the team (and third in the conference) with a.285 hitting percentage. She hit better than.350 in half of Western s 32 matches last season, and posted double digits in kills 17 times. Furry also recorded double-doubles in both of the Lady Toppers matches at the 1999 Sun Belt Tournament, averaging 3.7 kills and 2.8 digs in the event. Broerman To Miss Remainder of 2000 Season Freshman left-side hitter Lyndsey Broerman (Evansville, Ind./Reitz HS) will miss the rest of the 2000 campaign after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee during the Lady Toppers 3-2 loss to Cincinnati Sept. 5 at E.A. Diddle Arena. Tests by team physicians confirmed the injury and surgery will be scheduled at a later date. Since Broerman played in less than 20 percent of the Lady Toppers matches this year, she will be able to appeal to the NCAA for a medical redshirt season. If granted, she would retain four years of eligibility on the Hill. Western Kentucky University Austin Peay Notes p. 4
