Reports a. AVCA National Office Report Jim Giacomazzi Ten-year agreement that was approved that will save 1.4 million. MotorMVB is working with men s volleyball programs, this past year they gave four men s volleyball programs funding. If anyone is thinking about adding men s volleyball to let the AVCA/NAIA as well as MotorMVB know. In April, the small college beach championships will take place in Florida. A number of NAIA programs will be there as well including Webber, Warner and Missouri Baptist. The spring conference will take place in LA at UCLA with the focus being on strength and conditioning as well as media and fan engagement. b. Recognition Committee Report Stew McDole General Recognition Process: The committee reviewed the 2017 NAIA and AVCA/NAIA weekly and annual recognition programs. Observations/plans: 1- The weekly recognition program seems generally well received. NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS Last Modified: 1/23/2018

2 a. The move away from a single Player of the Week in favor of an Attacker, Setter and Defender of the week has been a good change. b. The group felt the Defender of the Week recognition should be replicated through an annual award to replace the Libero of the year. 2- AVCA-NAIA Assistant Coach of the Year a. This was a good year for conference participation. Twenty of the twenty-one conferences forwarded candidates for Regional and National consideration. b. It was noted that NAIA awards formwork does not include the unique AVCA/NAIA awards (Assistant Coach of the Year and Freshman of the Year). We need to be vigilant to interpret those through HCC calls and any other vehicle. c. All Region winners were already AVCA members, but two. The remaining two joined immediately. 3- Every conference provided an AVCA/NAIA Freshman of the Year candidate. 4- AVCA membership verification was the best ever. There were about 20 membership questions that required follow-up. Only one non-member elected to pass. That decision had no impact on the recognition process going forward. 5- Conference selection process: Two conferences expressed frustration with their All-Conference selection process. We clearly do not control conference process so our response was to recommend they move to a consensus system. 6- Recognition Regions: We reviewed the present 10 regions. No change was recommended. c. Competition Committee Report Jamie Adams There is a motion on the table to reseed the bracket after pool play, talk about the format would be later in the meeting. Also spoke about film exchange with Krossover. d. Men s Volleyball Report Donan Cruz Grandview University will be hosting the April th, He also spoke about Motor MVB and again, if thinking of adding, that they are an asset. e. National Office Report Adams Drug testing is in effect and can take place at any round of national play. There is an extension with Sioux City until 2020 to host the National Tournament. Opening Round certification process is good for five years however, the bid is annual. NAIA has a four year contract with Baden NAIA Memberships- as of now there are nine applicants, there were 249 institutions this year. 3. Motions Carter a. Assist Attempts: It is proposed that schools/conferences be asked to track and report assist attempts when entering statistical data into Dakstats. Rationale: This addition would allow considerable equalization of statistical measurement between the 5-1 and 6-2 setter since it is an assessment of success against opportunity rather than the more typical assists per set numbers. 3 b. Serving and Passing Attempts: It is proposed that teams track and report serving and passing attempts when entering statistical data into Dakstats. Rationale: These two statistics have been routinely tracked and reported by nearly every NAIA conference (20 of 21) for at least 20 years. The data is extremely helpful in the recognition process when evaluating players whose roles call for passing or serving. Our reporting includes service aces and passing errors, but neither of those numbers are very useful without some sense of the number of opportunities from which those results were generated. Stew McDole/Liz Mendiola c. Defensive Player of the Year: It is proposed that the present annual Libero of the Year award be re-designated the Defensive Player of the Year Award. Rationale: This would match up better with the present Defender of the Week recognition given out during the season. That award was modified some years ago to allow blocking to factor into the selection process. Alignment of the two awards seems appropriate. Stew McDole/Jim Giacomazzi Discussion: Would the awards committee be looking at blocks and digs only? Or would they include the entire stat package? Also suggested to change/amend the wording to Defensive Player of the Week to completely align. d. Red/Yellow Card: Any yellow or red cards (behavioral only, not delay of match, etc.) are now to be submitted to the NAIA just as any sanction would be in any other sport that demands reporting. The institution must report, along with an official report within a hour period. Should this be during a tournament, it can affect the match that would follow the report still. There can be an implemented appeal process that would require video and a witness report (another administrator, and/or opponent coach). If both coaches are involved it can be from both administrators. Rationale: There needs to be a penalty system of some sort just like we do for other sports such as soccer (3 yellows and sit out a game, 1 red sit out a game). The coaches should be held at a higher standard of professionalism regardless of the officials. This would support not only the institution s expectations, but also the NAIA Champions of Character mission. I would like to propose 2 yellows equals 1 match suspension (not even present at the facility), and 1 red is an automatic suspension (again, not even present at the facility of the match). Discussion: Track for a year and see what we are really dealing with. No Second e. Film Exchange Language: Change language regarding film exchange to the following: All qualifying teams must upload their final game film through the Krossover Video Exchange program by [date] or incur the stated fine No Exceptions will be made. Uploaded matches shall be filmed from the baseline. Opening Round matches will NOT need to be uploaded and will not be available for scouting purposes through Krossover. Please bring a copy of your last game with you to the coaches registration Monday morning (Final Site) in case there are issues with the download. Discussion: Height of camera position was discussed and determined to create a best practices sheet for facilities hosting their conference tournaments. It was reiterated that this rule is not for every match, but for the film that will be uploaded for the National Championship (so the final match played prior to the National Championship, usually the Conference finals). 4 f. Krossover Film Exchange: Krossover shall be the exclusive provider of regular season film exchange for all NAIA conferences sponsoring women s volleyball beginning with the season. Rationale: Create a more seamless process for national championship qualifying teams, along with creating efficiencies of scale when all NAIA teams are using the same system. Discussion: 15 of 21 conferences currently use Krossover with the agreement being up in June. No Second. g. EXPN3 Semifinals and Finals: Play the semifinal matches consecutively so as to allow for ESPN3 broadcast. Rationale: Gain larger exposure for NAIA volleyball through getting 3 matches on national broadcast. Caveat: If another encoder can be found the semifinals would move back to taking place at the same time. Discussion: Focus on the broadcast and not on the schedule. NAIA/Jim Giacomazzi Vote: h. Final Site Format: Change the format of the national tournament to RESEED following pool play. Rationale: The top 2 seeds in each pool of 8 advances to the single elimination portion of the national tournament. Should the original #1 seed in a pool come out second in the pool that team now drops down to the #2 team in the pool and forces a different route to the national championship. With this format and how the pools CROSS Pool A #1 plays Pool B #2 in the first round. That is seed #1 and Seed #15. What if #15 upsets #2 in Pool B. Then #2 and #15 flip after pool play. Now we have overall #1 and #2 teams playing in the FIRST round of bracket play. If we are not going to change cross pooling (A plays H, B plays G, C plays F, D plays E) then let s RESEED. No Second. i. Condensed Pool Play Schedule: Condensed pool play schedule with Pool Play on Monday and Tuesday, Round of 16 on Wednesday, Quarterfinals on Thursday, Semifinals on Friday and Finals on Saturday. Rationale: Student-athlete welfare and wellness. Competition Committee Vote: j. One Site Schedule: Bring all 44 teams to the final site with opening round matches played on the Saturday following Thanksgiving, off day on Sunday, pool play on Monday and Tuesday, round of 16 on Wednesday, quarterfinals on Thursday, semifinals on Friday and finals on Saturday. Rationale: Student-athlete welfare and experience at the national tournament final site. Fred Aubuchon/Ryan DeLong Tabled for discussion at next year s meeting. 4. 5 5. Presentations a. Baden Richard Scott Talked about having support at pre-season, conference and regional tournaments. Brad asked about the blemish ball. Richard also talked about conference agreements with several conferences. b. MotorMVB MotorMVB is interested in growing the game of Men s Volleyball on college campuses. They have a pool of money from which they can allot grants for programs either starting a men s program or trying to grow the program. 5
