1 MARQUETTE MEN S SOCCER No. 6 Marquette vs. No. 3 Georgetown 2014 BIG EAST Men s Soccer Championship Quarterfinals Tuesday, Nov. 11 Shaw Field Washington, D.C. 1 p.m. CT Men s Soccer Contact: Luke LeNoble (414) lucas.lenoble@marquette.edu GoMarquette.com Key Storylines The No. 6-seeded Marquette University (8-5-4, BIG EAST) men s soccer team will defend their 2013 BIG EAST Championship Tuesday afternoon when they face No. 3-seeded Georgetown University (11-3-4, 6-2-1) in the 2014 BIG EAST Men s Soccer Championship quarterfinals. Marquette will play in its sixth-straight BIG EAST tourney. The winner advances to the BIG EAST tournament semifinals against No. 2 Xavier on Friday, Nov. 14 at PPL Park in Chester, Pennsylvania. The Golden Eagles will look to advance to their third-straight BIG EAST tournament semifinal match. Marquette earned the sixth and final slot in the BIG EAST tournament by defeating DePaul 4-0 in the final match of the regular season (Nov. 7). The victory brought MU to 10 points in the BIG EAST, one point above Seton Hall s nine. Entering Friday s match against DePaul, the Golden Eagles needed help from Xavier in order to get past Butler in the standings. The Musketeers defeated the Bulldogs 2-0, allowing MU to reach postseason play. Georgetown finished third in the ultra-competitive BIG EAST Conference with 19 points and enter the league tournament on a four-match win streak. The Hoyas six wins in conference play was tied for the second best total in the league and they have only given up one goal in their current win streak. The Golden Eagles scored a season-high four goals last time out against DePaul. Louis Bennett II registered his second-consectutive game with three points (1g, 1a each match). C. Nortey also scored for the second match in a row, Axel Sjoberg assisted on the first two goals and Jack Alberts found the back of the net as did Coco Navarro. Marquette is looking for its first win at Shaw Field (0-4-1) and Georgetown owns a alltime series advantage over MU. Earlier this season, MU and Georgetown tied 0-0 in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 4. Scouting The Opponent Georgetown secured the third seed in this year s league tournament with a record in conference play. The Hoyas are led by Brandon Allen (10g, 3a; conference leader in goals) and Alex Muyl (2g, 6a). The next leading goal scorer for Georgetown is Arun Basuljevic with four. Goalkeeper Tomas Gomez has 10 shutouts (tied for first in the BIG EAST) this season and a goals against average of 0.52 (second in the BIG EAST). Georgetown is at Shaw Field this season. Charlie Lyon and Axel Sjoberg Move On To Academic All-America Ballot Redshirt senior goalkeeper Charlie Lyon and redshirt junior central defender Axel Sjoberg have been named to the 11-person Capital One Academic All-District 6 Men s Soccer Team, it was announced Thursday, Oct. 30. Lyon, the BIG EAST Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, boasts a 3.89 grade point average as a biomedical sciences major on the pre-medicine track and Sjoberg has a 3.90 GPA in finance. This is the third time that Lyon has been honored, while Sjoberg earns his second academic all-district award. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have appeared in at least half of the team s contests and maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average. Both student-athletes will now be placed on the Capital One Academic All-America ballot, which will be voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of the America (CoSIDA) and announced in late November. MU In the National Rankings & Among National Stat Leaders Marquette was ranked as high as No. 7 (NSCAA/Continental Tire) in the polls following week 7 of the regular season; The Golden Eagles were ranked as high as No. 11 (Soccer America) in the preseason rankings. As a team, Marquette is tied for 15th in the nation in shutout percentage with eight clean sheets through the team s first 16 regular-season matches. Marquette Celebrates 50 Years of Men s Soccer The Marquette University men s soccer program was launched in That season, the Warriors (as the MU athletic teams were then called) finished with a overall record including a 6-2 victory over Illinois on Sept. 19. Ed Nomo Ongolo led the squad with 17 goals that season. To celebrate the 50th season in program history, Men s Soccer Alumni Weekend was held from Oct More than 70 former players and coaches attended a special banquet Friday night and were recognized at halftime of the match against visiting St. John s (Oct. 11) the following night. Shutout Streaks Come To An End Led by goalkeeper Charlie Lyon, the Marquette defense posted a school record eight-straight shutouts from Sept. 5 through Oct. 11. The streak was snapped in a 1-0 loss at Butler (Oct. 15). Lyon went 804:58 minutes without conceding a goal during the stretch, a school record and one of the longest consecutive shutout minute streaks in NCAA Division I history. MU posted seven straight shutouts at Valley Fields, a stretch of clean sheets that dated back to the 2013 postseason. The home shutout streak came to an end in the 17th minute of a 1-1 draw against the visiting Villanova Wildcats on Oct. 18. Charlie Lyon Building On Already-Strong Resume Lyon ranks fifth among all active goalkeepers in NCAA Div. I with 29 career shutouts, which is one more than Jim Welch s 28 ( ) for most in MU history. The MU goalie posted eight consecutive shutouts from Sept. 5 through Oct. 11, including a stretch of 804:58 minutes without conceding a goal, both school records; Lyon s consecutive shutout minutes streak was among the all-time longest streaks in NCAA Division I history. Lyon entered the 2014 season as the school s all-time career leader in goals against average (0.82 GAA) and ranked second all-time in save percentage (.823). Lyon was named the BIG EAST Conference Co-Goalkeeper of the Year in 2013 and was named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America First Team. Lyon Selected As A Finalist For Senior CLASS Award Goalkeeper Charlie Lyon is one of 10 finalists for the 2014 men s soccer Senior CLASS Award. On Wednesday, Oct. 22, the list of candidates was narrowed from 30 to the remaining 10 NCAA Division I seniors who have notable achievements in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition. Tabbed as the nation s premier award for NCAA senior studentathletes, the Senior CLASS Award highlights outstanding student-athletes, while encouraging students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Nortey, an All-BIG EAST First Team selection and the active team leader in career goals scored, was one of 32 men s players to earn a spot on the 2014 Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy Watch List at the start of this season. The Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious award in Division I college soccer, and has been given to the most outstanding male and female player each year since The NSCAA member coaches will narrow that list to 15 semifinalists near the end of the season. The top three vote getters will then be announced as finalists in early December, and will be invited to the trophy presentation banquet on Jan. 9, 2015, at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, where the winner will be announced. Coach Bennett Approaching 200 Collegiate Victories Head coach Louis Bennett, with an overall career record of , is fast approaching a historic mark as an NCAA Division I men s soccer head coach. Bennett is just three wins shy from reaching win No. 200 for his career. He recorded his first 135 wins in 10 seasons at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Redshirt Freshmen Making An Impact A group of redshirt freshmen on MU s roster have made their presence felt as playmakers contributing in their rookie years. Left back Jack Alberts tallied his first collegiate goal, the eventual game-winner, off a header in the 15th minute of MU s 2-0 home win over Milwaukee (Sept. 17) and then struck another header in for a game-winner in the following match against Northern Illinois (Sept. 20), that time in the 82nd minute. The Hinsdale, Illinois, native scored his third goal of 2014 in a 4-0 win over DePaul (Nov. 7). 3 2014 MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY MEN S SOCCER BIG EAST REGULAR SEASON CHAMPIONS (2011,2013) BIG EAST TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS (2013) Midfielder Alex McBride scored the game-winning goal in a 2-0 win against Gonzaga (Sept. 5). McBride stayed hot when he recorded an assist on Selvaggi s game-winning goal against Drake (Sept. 13). McBride also tallied an assist in a 3-3 draw at Seton Hall (Nov. 1). Midfielder Daniel Szczepanek joins teammate Jack Alberts as the only rookies on the squad to have played in every match so far in Szczepanek has made one start and scored the second goal in MU s win against Gonzaga. Midfielder Driton Zyteja made his first career start in a 1-0 win against Oregon State, playing all 90 minutes. Zyteja has played in three matches this season. LB2 Making Headlines For being just a true sophomore, midfielder Louis Bennett II is making a name for himself not just in Milwaukee, but across the nation. After being a unanimous 2013 BIG EAST All-Rookie Team selection and All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention, Bennett II was named a 2014 BIG EAST Conference Preseason All-BIG EAST First Team selection. In this past offseason, Bennett II was one of 24 players to train with the U.S. Under-20 Men s National Team in Raleigh, North Carolina. A former No. 1 recruit of the Midwest region, Bennett II was one of two freshmen for MU to play in every match in 2013, including 20 starts. The son of head coach Louis Bennett, Bennett II finished second on the squad in points (13) and tied for second in both goals (4) and assists (5) in Family Connections There are plenty of ties within the Marquette soccer family on this season s roster. Sophomore midfielder Louis Bennett II is the son of head coach Louis Bennett. Redshirt sophomore defender John Pothast is the younger brother to former co-captain defender Eric Pothast. Redshirt junior forward David Selvaggi is the younger brother to former midfielder Anthony Selvaggi. Redshirt freshman midfielder Alex McBride is the younger brother to former Marquette women s soccer stars Kerry and Allison McBride. MLS Homegrown Players Featured on 2014 Roster Since Louis Bennett took over as head coach, Marquette has always had strong ties to the MLS Academy. There are five homegrown players currently on the roster. Coco Navarro played in the youth development system with Real Salt Lake-Arizona, while the Chicago Fire Academy has produced the likes of Charlie Lyon, Brady Wahl, Louis Bennett II and Martin Alba. The Homegrown Player Rule is a Major League Soccer program that allows MLS teams to sign local players from their own development academies directly to MLS first team rosters. Marquette Coming Off Historical 2013 Campaign Marquette claimed its second BIG EAST Conference regular season championship in three years (2011, 2013) and captured the first conference tournament title in program history en route to its second straight NCAA tournament appearance. MU earned a bye in the opening round of the 2013 NCAA Division I Men s Soccer Championship, then knocked off Akron 1-0 in second-round action at Valley Fields. Then-freshman Coco Navarro s golden goal with 25 seconds remaining in the first overtime period gave the Golden Eagles their first-ever NCAA tournament victory and secured Marquette s first trip to the Round of 16 where they fell 3-1 at Virginia. Golden Eagles Garner Preseason Recognition Marquette was picked to finish atop the BIG EAST Conference preseason coaches poll along with then-no. 9 Georgetown. Redshirt junior Axel Sjoberg was selected as the BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year for the second season in a row. Last season, Sjoberg was an All-BIG EAST First Team selection and Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the 2013 BIG EAST Men s Soccer Championship. Including Sjoberg, sophomore Louis Bennett II and redshirt junior C. Nortey were selected to the BIG EAST All-BIG EAST First Team. Redshirt sophomore John Pothast and sophomore Coco Navarro were selected to the BIG EAST Preseason All-BIG EAST Second Team. Largest Crowds Ever At Valley Fields Six of the top 10 largest crowds to ever watch a Marquette men s soccer match at Valley Fields have featured MU versus its cross-town rival Milwaukee Panthers in the battle for the Milwaukee Cup. The largest home crowd on record was set Sept. 1, 2010 when 2,089 supporters filled the bleachers to watch the annual showdown. BIG EAST Conference Championship Returns To PPL Park PPL Park, home to Major League Soccer s Philadelphia Union, is set to host another year of BIG EAST Conference tournament action. Tickets are on sale now for the semi-final and final matches to be played on Nov. 14 and 16, respectively.
