3 Read between the lines Learning to infer, or read between the lines, is one key to good reading comprehension. Consider these tips for helping your youngster make inferences. Describe the setting. Pick a book, and read a few sentences to your child (without him looking). Leave out words that name the setting. Example: Sand stretched in all directions cacti dotted the landscape. Can he infer where the story is set? If he isn t sure, give him a hint. ( Where do you see lots of sand and cacti? ) Look for lessons. Fables are great for reading between the lines. Read one by Aesop, and help your youngster figure out the lesson. For instance, The Tortoise and the Hare teaches that even if you re slow, you can win if you just keep going. Have your child point out parts that he used to make his inference. ( The tortoise never stopped, and he took one good step after another. ) Use prompts. Questions that start with Why do you think? or How do you know? can encourage your youngster to infer. You might ask why he thinks a character behaved the way he did or how he knows it s going to snow. Together, look for clues in the book that may help him answer the questions. Home & School Connection: Resources for Educators, a division of CCH Incorporated 128 N. Royal Avenue, Front Royal, VA Resources for Educators, a division of CCH Incorporated Q & A: How to manage screen time Q: My son could spend hours watching videos or using apps. How can I set reasonable limits? A: The goal should be for your son to have enough unplugged time to finish schoolwork, be with family and friends, get exercise, and relax. Experts suggest coming up with a plan that suits your family. Think about what your youngster uses devices for. A fifth grader may need a computer for homework, while a younger child might simply play on a tablet. Then, set limits that make sense. Maybe you ll decide on a half-hour of screen time on school days (after homework is done) but give him an hour a day on weekends. It also helps to name times for everyone to stay off screens, perhaps during meals and car rides. Also, consider turning off screens an hour before bed the stimulation can make it hard to fall asleep. Note: Set aside a place for stowing devices so they re out of sight. To create a plan, see healthychildren.org/english/media/pages/default.aspx. Home & School Connection: Resources for Educators, a division of CCH Incorporated 128 N. Royal Avenue, Front Royal, VA Resources for Educators, a division of CCH Incorporated Safety Smarts Help your child travel safely to and from school. Explain that it s important to avoid horseplay at the bus stop and to stay away from the street. If your youngster walks to school, make sure she sticks with a group. And if you drive, drop her at the designated spot, and remember to stop for school buses loading or unloading children. 5 Celebrate Walk to School Day with Panther Run Elementary! Panther Run will be participating in International Walk to School Day. Walk to School Day is recognized around the world as a day that embraces the benefits of walking by encouraging kids to walk and bike to school. Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community. More info will be forthcoming in future editions of the Panther Prints. Things to remember when walking 1. Always walk on the sidewalk. Walk on the sidewalk if there is one. 2. If no sidewalk, walk facing traffic. If there is no sidewalk and you have to walk on the road, be sure to walk facing traffic. 3. Be safe, be seen. Brightly colored clothing makes it easier for drivers to see you during the daytime. But at night, you need to have a flashlight or wear special reflective material on your shoes, cap and jacket or on your arms or legs that bounce the car s lights off you and back to the driver. This light should caution the driver that there is something or someone moving and they should slow down and be careful. Safety tips for crossing the street: 1. Stop at the curb or the edge of the road if there is no curb. 2. Stop and look left, then right, then left again for moving cars before you step into the street. 3. If you see a car, wait until it goes by. The look left, right, left again until no cars are coming. 4. If a car is parked where you are crossing, look to make sure there is no driver and that the car is not running. 5. Next, go to the edge of the car and look left-look right-look left again to see if cars are coming. 6. When no cares are coming, walk so not run across the road. Keep looking left right left for cars while you are crossing.
