This short walk is only about 600 m, but there is much to see. The walk will take 1½ hours. Ponddipping and other children s activities will be available. You will be able to see some old photos and a new local history leaflet is available. Sponsored by a Your Wirral grant. Admission is free but donations are welcome. See websites: Sunday 15th September at 2 pm The Park is signed from Bebington Road, and the access is between Aldi store and the railway over bridge. 3 NEW FERRY WALK OXTON VILLAGE WALK New Ferry and its Waterfront History Description: The walk will cover Bebington Railway Station and the Birkenhead-Chester railway, New Ferry shops and their significance to Port Sunlight village, New Ferry Park and its features. Beaconsfield Road Brick village and information about the local brick making industry, Shorefields, site of the former fever hospital, the swimming baths and Great Eastern pub, New Ferry Road and the Esplanade for retired seaman. We will finish at the Gap. Friday 13th September at 9:30 am Meet at Bebington Railway Station, Bebington, Wirral CH63 7LA The walk will take 3 hours No booking required Mark Anthony Craig Guided Walk, including a tour round the outskirts of Oxton village, Oxton, Wirral Description: These Guided Heritage Walks will take you either to the East or the West of Oxton Conservation area, looking at the fine houses, gardens and trees. We will walk up roads with secrets and stories, and you will hear about Oxton s past, how the area developed and about some of the people and events that left their mark here. Saturday 7th September Walking to the East of Oxton at 11 am Saturday 14th September Walking to the West of Oxton at 11 am Meet in the centre of the Village by the Oxton Society noticeboard, opposite the Oxton Bar and Kitchen. 4 PORT SUNLIGHT VILLAGE - WHO LIVED IN MY HOUSE? RAKE LANE CEMETERY Port Sunlight Village Guided Walk, including some of its outstanding buildings Description: A rare opportunity to see inside some of the beautiful houses in Port Sunlight and find out about village residents both past and present. Port Sunlight is a 19th Century garden village created by the Soap King William Hesketh Lever for his Sunlight Soap factory workers. It is a designated Conservation Area and the majority of the buildings are Grade 2 listed. Today it is considered to be one of the finest surviving examples of early urban planning in the UK. Saturday 7th September 11:30 am and 2 pm Wednesday 11th September 11:30 am and 2 pm Meet at the Port Sunlight Museum, 23 King George s Drive, Port Sunlight, Wirral CH62 5DX Port Sunlight Museum has its own Tea Room serving hot and cold drinks, hand-baked cakes and light lunches The pathways can be uneven in places and some of the buildings have limited disabled access Port Sunlight Museum Rake Lane Cemetery, Rake Lane, Wallasey, Wirral CH45 5DE Description: Wallasey Cemetery was opened 130 years ago. During that time the cemetery has reflected our local, maritime and national history. There are a number of graves of special interest in the cemetery, such as those associated with the three major sea disasters: Lusitania, Empress of Ireland and the Titanic. 5 ROCK PARK CONSERVATION AREA SEACOMBE FERRY TO VALE PARK Rock Park, Rock Park Road, Rock Ferry, Wirral Description: Rock Park was made a Conservation Area in The estate was laid out by Joseph Bennison in 1837 and now comprises 36 houses of different styles and all Grade 2 listed. Also surviving are the old Rock Ferry pier and the listed stone slipway. The New Ferry - Rock Ferry coast is designated an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). Moored in the Mersey were once the training ships Conway and Indefatigable and the reform ships Akbar and Clarence. Tuesday 10th September at 10:30 am Meet at the old New Ferry Pier Terminal at junction of The Dell, New Ferry Road, New Ferry, Wirral CH62 1DA The walk lasts 1½ to 2 hours There is disabled access Su Thomson Guided Heritage Walk from Seacombe Ferry to Vale Park Description: We will stop at the Mersey Tunnel Ventilation Building, Guinea Gap Baths, Wallasey Town Hall, Egremont Ferry, Maddock Road, Manor Lane, War Memorial and Vale Park. At each pause on our journey there will be time for questions about the promenade and the area and the opportunity to look at photos and artefacts which reflect our rich history and the way things were.
