It s surprisingly easy to get enough exercise to significantly benefit your health and wellbeing. The illustration below shows you what health experts recommend, but the important thing is to build on what you are doing already and minimise the amount of time you spend sitting. Sedentary behaviour has a negative effect on health and research suggests you should break up bouts of sitting every 30 minutes by getting up and moving even if it s just to go and make a cup of tea or do a few stretches! Moderate level activity is any which raises your heartbeat, makes you breathe a bit faster, feel a bit warmer, but where you can still talk comfortably. CHILDREN AND Young People ADULTS OLDER PEOPLE Benefits 60 MIN Of moderate to vigorous activity at least daily, and including exercise that strengthens bones and muscles. 30 MIN 5 or more days a week of moderate intensity activity, to include activities to improve muscle strength on at least two days a week. 30 MIN 5 or more days a week of moderate intensity activity, including exercise that helps with balance and co-ordination. Win is pictured here with fellow Golden Oldies at Dance Active 2013 (second right). At 86 years young, Win participates weekly in both line dancing and gentle exercise and is truly inspirational in her belief in the importance of staying active and her commitment to doing so.
