4 14th Scottish Borders Galashiels is proud to welcome you to the 14th Scottish Borders Festival of Walking, a superb week long celebration of walking and the countryside for all ages and abilities. Galashiels, which lies at the base of the steep sided valley of the Gala Water, close to its meeting with the majestic River Tweed, lies at the heart of Borders country. The town is within easy reach of the Moorfoot, Lammermuir and Cheviot hill ranges, the Yarrow, Ettrick and Tweed Valleys and surrounded by rich farmland and lush countryside, making Galashiels the ideal base for walking in the area. GALASHIELS The town s name, first recorded in 1124, is partly derived from the adjacent river, Gala Water, and from shiels meaning dwellings. Known to locals as Gala, the town has a marvellous history with links to William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, and Black Douglas. Amongst others are Robert Burns, who re-wrote the song Braw Lads o Galla Water during the poet s pilgrimage across the Borders. The town is also renowned for its part in the once booming tweed industry helped by Sir Walter Scott s canny marketing technique during his visits to London. GR Braw Lads O Galla Water Braw, braw lads on Yarrow braes, They rove amang the blooming heather, But Yarrow braes nor Ettrick shaws Can match the lads o Galla Water. But there is ane, a secret ane, Aboon them a I loe him better, And I ll be his, and he ll be mine, The bonie lad o Galla Water. Altho his daddie was nae laird, And tho I had nae meikle tocher, Yet, rich in kindest, truest love, We ll tent our flocks by Galla Water. It ne er was wealth, it ne er was wealth, That coft contentment, peace, and pleasure, The bands and bliss o mutual love, O, that s the chiefest warld s treasure. Today Gala has successfully diversified from a reliance on textiles into a bustling rural town offering the visitor an abundance of interesting places to explore, a wide variety of shops, bars, hotels to visit and the surrounding countryside to enjoy.
