7 7 th Grade Hurricanes & Tornadoes Squad Team Report We started our season early Feb well before muster. The Tornadoes joined forces with the Hurricanes and training the players from both teams together worked well with plenty of parent help. We would set up 4 pods of different football exercises, then rotate every 8 minutes so all the kids got the same drills. Focus in the drills was passing and shooting. After the drills, we would split into games of 5 or 6 a-side where the focus in the games was learning positions and passing. Positions for 5 a-side was two players at the back, a right sided player, left sided player and a central player. Every time the ball left the field for a goal kick, players went back to their positions; during play, right-sided players were encouraged not to go over to the left side of the field and vice versa, so as to avoid players bunching. Players that trained together on training nights were kept together for the Friday night games to encourage familiarity and passing, although occasionally teams were tweaked to balance numbers and skill. For Friday night games, we had three fairly even skilled teams and one development (lesser skilled) team. I found the Friday night football quite good under lights. The 7th Grade Drury teams dominated the Papakura teams and more often than not beat them convincingly. We had excellent regular attendance compared to some of our opposition teams, which made it difficult to juggle numbers on the fly when the other teams were inflexible about mixing up players. Once the Coerver training sessions began in Term 2, we would have a 30 min game afterwards for any kids that wanted it and normally around 15 of the 20 players would be keen to stay on. Coerver was great for improving players individual ball mastery. Half-way through the season, we introduced extra training for the top ten keen players from the combined squad with a view to competing in a couple of tournaments. This tournament squad were pushed hard on Sundays for minutes doing a variety of advanced drills where players were given position-specific training: lots of passing and possession drills, third man running, shooting, etc The tournament squad performed beautifully at the tournaments they attended at Birkenhead & East Coast Bays clubs with 7 wins, 1 draw and 4 losses against top teams and in the case of the 2 nd tournament, against mostly 8 th Grade teams while we fielded 6 and 7 year olds. - Mike Herkt (coach)

10 8 th Grade Serpents - Small Whites Coach: Aaron Gray Assistant Coach: Wiebe Boxem Manager: Hayley Rossiter Ashley McMurtrie, Blake Batten, Dylan Crann, Dylan Stratton, Emmitt Boxem, Iggy Frost, Kamryn Peters, Lotte Benge, Marcus Doig, Shardai Gray Blake Batten Dylan Stratton Lotte Benge Team Report We have had a cracker of a season, even though half the team were new. 3 or 4 kids were absolute newbies to the game but soccer was in their blood and they turned out to be right up there with seasoned vets. Playing positions took a little getting used to, but the team rose to the challenge and began working as a united unit and even gave the Rattlers a run for their money. We had a weekly whiteboard session before Coerver, which helped them understand the positions and the responsibilities of that position. The team learnt a lot from Coerver training giving them that tactical edge I couldn t. I think Iggy and Coerver Coach Lucy had a little thing going on, because she said his name a lot I mean A LOT. Within our team of 10, 3 are girls: Shardai, Ashley and Lotte. What an impact they have once on the pitch. Lottie is such a little Jack Russell and tackles with vengeance; Ashley and Shardai are just so solid in whatever position they are placed into. And the Boys I can t forget the flying lock Dils (aka Dylan Crann) who puts in so much energy on the pitch. The new kids on the block, Dylan S, Blake Batten and Iggy, have so much talent and I m sure will go far. As for the other boys: Cam the Man who made his first hattrick a few weeks back (even though one goal was for the other team), Emmitt the team cuddler, Marcus (Sir Marcus Manners) the most polite kid ever. A big thank you to our team parents for all their support through the season, it was great to always have your back up in trying to wrangle these Serpents. Finally a HUGE thanks to our team Manager Hayley for keeping me organised and updated and also to Coach Wiebe for your assistance and being available for the teams when I couldn t. I can t forget the team Ref Blake, for putting your hand up to Referee every Friday night. All in all, a great season, with a great team and a great support network. See you in Aaron Gray (Coach)
