5 The Editor s Epistle Good afternoon and welcome to Herns Lane, the home of Welwyn Garden City Football Club. Today we extend armest greetings to the players, officials and supporters of Wodson Park for a Spartan South Midlands League fixture. Today s fixture is a special one for current Citizen management duo Scott and Pablo, the opponents being their former club of last season. Let s hope for a happy re-union all round. Last weekend saw us battle out a goalless draw with Kentish Town in what was far from being a dull game. Both sides had chances to win the match and we were indebted to goalkeeper Neil Cheek for keeping us in the game at times. On the whole a draw was a fair reflection on the game Our opponents this afternoon have not enjoyed the best of starts to the new campaign, and at present are still looking for their first win of the season. But with creditable draws with Hoddesdon Town, Langford and Southall, they should not be taken lightly. Last season our paths crossed three times, Wodson Park winning the Herts Charity Shield clash at the start of the season whilst we went on to record two victories in the league meetings. Following today we turn ourselves to cup action when Premier Division side and current holders of the trophy, Haringey Borough are our visitors here on Wednesday evening for a League Challenge Trophy clash. Making Your Business, Look The Business Unit 1-3 (Predator Motor Sport) South Mundells, Welwyn Gdn City Hertfordshire, AL7 1EP Telephone: wgc@allsignsallprint.com Last weekend saw the reserves cruelly beaten by a last minute goal in their clash of the basement boys at Winslow United. Today their quest of their first win of the new campaign takes them to Biggleswade United. Finally, may I ask for your full support to the minute s silence before the game, this in remembrance of Terry Gilmore (full details can be found elsewhere in today s match programme). Enjoy the game and let s get behind the lads, your vocal support is very much appreciated. Go Citizens Karen

12 The Spartan South Midlands Football League world was stunned to learn of the passing of League Committee member Terry Gilmore on Friday night. Our deepest sympathies go to his wife Diane and his two children. The League have asked that all clubs hold a minute s silence before the game this afternoon in memory of Terry. TERRY GILMORE R.I.P. A true gentleman who gave a lifetime of service to local football Terry played for The 61 FC between (having previously played for Vauxhall Motors in the Spartan League ) and was the club s leading goalscorer in the 1966/67 season. He was a member of the club committee between 1971 and 1980 and was largely involved in fundraising for the development of Kingsway - the home ground of The 61 club. Terry joined Ashcroft Co-op in 1980, and held a variety of positions, principally as Hon Secretary until He was elected to the Bedfordshire FA as a Council Member in 1987 and he became a Vice President in Terry joined the Spartan South Midlands Football League in 1999 as Registration Secretary and he performed that role right up until 2011 when he stood down, but remained as a Management Committee member until his death last week. On standing down, Terry was made a Vice President of the SSMFL. Over his years on the Committee, Terry proved to be a good friend and confidante to hundreds of club secretaries whom he helped through the sometimes painful rigours of player registrations. Football League. This arrangement continues today. The clubs reserve team play in SSMFL Reserve Division two and our A team in the East Herts Corinthian Sunday Football League. For the start of the season the club undertook wholesale changes with the management and players of the first and reserve sides. In came Simon Riddle, David Stingemore and Deane Niner to look after the first team and Neil Kimsey and Tony Robinson for the reserves. With a new very much hands on chairman the new look senior section of the club now has direction and an air of calmness that has already filtered down to our new crop of young and talented players. The story continues!! Terry was also actively involved in Sunday football in the Luton area, playing for Barbarians in the North Home Counties Sunday league, as well as holding administrative positions with the same club. He joined the NHCSL committee in 1982 and acted as their Registration Secretary whilst holding the same post with the SSMFL, and going on to become Vice President in 2004 and President in Terry leaves a wife Diane and two children (adults), Ray who was at one time a referee on the SMFL league at Step 4 level and now lives in Manchester and a daughter who lives in France with her fiance. Ray has 2 boys who are both keen sportsmen, showing a particular aptitude for cricket, being on the books of Lancashire CCC. The funeral will be on Friday 28 September at Luton Crematorium at a.m.
