BAR STAFF WANTED Our bar manager Sue Teixeira is urgently seeking more bar staff to add to our rota. Ideally mature ladies and gents would be great but we are open to all candidates over the age of 25. This is a voluntary position and whatever time you can give us would be gratefully accepted. We are open 7 days a week so there are plenty of hours to choose from, be it weekdays, weekends or both, even it is just for a couple of hours. Please contact Karen Fisher for more information. This will be a Free Entrance event. There will be fairground rides, sweet, popcorn and candyfloss stalls, Dinky Donuts, Ice Cream Van, Children and Adult Inflatables, shows and workshops and much more. This event is currently in the planning stage but the date is now booked so do please make a note and bring yourselves and your family down to support the club. There will be loads to do and we are looking forward to it. Anyone wishing to volunteer on the day or perhaps would like to join our Social Committee, please contact Karen Fisher for more information. CRAFT FAIR WITH CAR BOOT SALE SUNDAY 4 AUGUST GATES OPEN TO PUBLIC 1PM Another new event for the club this year. This is a craft fair with craft stalls indoors and out and a car boot sale in the car park. We are really excited about this event as it will be a great way for local people to show the community their wonderful crafts. Charges for stalls will be 10 per table ( 5 deposit on booking and 5 on the day). There are approx 10 tables available inside the clubhouse which will be on a first come first served basis. There will also be spaces available outside but you will need to bring your own tables. Again, best spots are on a first come first serve basis. Car boot sale will be in car park and prices will be 10 per car and 12 per van. ( 5 deposit on booking and balance on day). We are taking bookings now, so please get in touch if you want to take a stall or book a car boot space. Please ask for a layout plan if you are booking a craft stall. Entrance to public will be on a donation basis. Please help us to make this event a wonderful day for everyone and hopefully something we can do on a regular basis. Today we extend warmest greetings to the players, officials and supporters of Harpenden Town for a Spartan South Midlands League Division One fixture. Our last two outings have seen us fail to build upon the excellent work achieved at New Bradwell St Peter recently. Firstly last Saturday saw Buckingham Athletic record a 3-1 win here at Herns Lane and then on Tuesday evening our short trip to Wodson Park resulted in a goalless draw. Although goalless the game was far from being boring, in fact at times the Wodson Park goal was under siege but try as we did we were unable to pierce their resolve. If we can continue that approach then results will surely come our way and our quest to put breathing space between ourselves and the relegation dog-fight will be achieved. Our earlier meeting with today s opponents Harpenden Town came back in August and saw us record an excellent 0-0 draw against a team who continued to top the table for several months until recently. Following today the first team takes to the road with a very short trip across town to face Codicote at Gosling Stadium on Tuesday evening before travelling up the A1 to face Langford next Saturday. For the reserves they travel to lowly Tring Corinthians today looking to get back to winning ways. Next Saturday they are at home to Harpenden Town Reserves, so for all those not making the trip to Langford why not come down and give Mark Slater and Dave Tripp your support. 12 TODAY S MAN IN THE MIDDLE Our match referee this afternoon, Peter Saggars (59), is a retired Police Officer who is a resident of Bushey, Herts. He now works as an Ambulance Driver at Edgware Community Hospital. Played football for Chorleywood Common FC until aged 35 and started refereeing in 1998 serving on the Herts Senior County League and Ryman League. Now referees on the Spartan South Midlands League and Capital Midweek League. Married to Alison and has two children Dan (22) and Laura (24). from the middle Peter enjoys keeping fit (running and spinning) and looking after his garden. Peter is accompanied at Herns Lane this afternoon by Trevor Gregory and Mike Broad both of whom hail from Milton Keynes. We trust all have an enjoyable afternoon with us. 14 TODAY S VISITORS - HARPENDEN TOWN F.C. Harpenden Town Football Club was formed as Harpenden F.C.1891 playing in both the Mid-Herts and Herts County Leagues, winning the Mid-Herts on numerous occasions. Town was added in the Town climbed into the South Midlands League in 1957 winning the Premier Division title in 1962 and 1965 and in 1968 adding both the Herts Charity Shield and the South Midlands League Shield to their trophy haul. Season saw the last significant investment in the club with the erection of the Centenary Stand, and, the installation of floodlights. The Club obtained entry to the FA Cup for the first time in 1998 and is a regular contender in the FA Vase. After a turbulent period resulting in relegation from the Premier Division in 2000 and 2005, the club had 3 committee members and was being kept alive thanks to the money and time of one man. By the start of the 2006/07 season a new committee was in place created from ex Harpenden Colts managers, officials and players. Their first move was to gain the Football Associations Charter Standard Accreditation, which ensured the correct structures were in place. On the field the club also required stabilizing and it was felt that more local community approach was needed so links with Harpenden Colts were established to bring through local young players ensuring a pathway from under sevens to adult football. improvements and a lot of hard work. Success soon followed and after only one year Harpenden Town was named Herts FA Charter Standard club of the year thanks to their community work, which included hosting an anti-racism event, an adult seven aside competition, free coaching offered to schools/junior teams and the of development of women s football through the Herts youth games. Word was spreading of the clubs rebirth and the link with Harpenden Colts was rubber stamped by the creation of a youth team for the 2007/08 season to plug the gap between junior and adult football, this team ensures teenage players move into adult football and don t stop playing once their U18 team finishes. The past two seasons has seen Harpenden make great strides to secure its long term future however with possibly the worst facilities in the league due to lack of investment and vandalism over the past 20 years we face a massive task to completely turn around the clubs fortunes. We now have a new football management set up all with local loyalties and most new players come through the colts via the under 18 s and reserve structure so further guaranteeing long term loyalties on the playing side as well 2011/12 saw the 120 th anniversary of Harpenden Town FC, and to mark the occasion the club held a day of celebration around the league game against local rivals St Albans City Reserves, when a season best crowd of 110 were treated to entertainment from local organisations. Within one season the new committee had financially secured the short term future of the club thanks to minor clubhouse
