1 HKFC Festival of Mini Rugby March 10th 2013 Sponsored by Hong Kong Football Club Youth Rugby Associate Sponsors

2 Welcome message from Kevin Taylor HKFC Mini Rugby Chairman The Clubs and their Colours Hong Kong Football Club welcomes all visiting teams for our annual Mini Rugby Festival. It is great to see the festival continue to grow with more teams and players than ever before visiting our Club for a day of rugby and fun. This also reflects the growing popularity of mini rugby in Hong Kong. It s great to see the sport flourishing. I would like to thank the other clubs who have hosted festivals as well throughout the season. This has provided opportunities for our children to have match time in a city where pitches, space and rugby time is not easy to secure. Aberdeen (ABN) CB Monkeys (MKY) DEA Tigers (DEA) Discovery Bay Pirates (DBP) Programme designed and produced by Bernard Hodes Group The emphasis for today for us at HKFC is enjoyment of the game and fun. We do not encourage an overcompetitive atmosphere as we hope to instill a lifetime love of the game for our players, and I think we need to sometimes reflect on that. We have two Cup competitions to look forward to, the Richard Hawkes and Kim Lam Cups for U12 mixed and U11/12Girls respectively. This is the highlight of Mini Rugby participation for the U12 children, I am sure we will all be thrilled by the standard of play and we look forward to a great event played in the right spirit. There are a great deal of people who contribute to HKFC mini rugby and our festival. I want to particularly thank our great sponsors, Newedge, National Australia Bank, CLSA, Kennedy s, Reed, Williams Lea, CBRE, Macleay College and STI Sports. Their support throughout the season has been vital to the success and enjoyment of our players. I also want to thank our volunteers today who are integral to the smooth running of the festival from the coaches and managers who work with our players week in and out, at every festival; to our pitch marshalls and parents who are staffing booths. Mark Pawley and the staff at the HKFC are excellent and contribute to mini rugby throughout the season and particularly to the festival today. A huge amount of effort has gone into the festival thanks to the committee members and volunteers, we couldn t have run this day without you. The mini rugby section is a significant part of the rugby section and we appreciate the support of senior players and our excellent Club Rugby section Chairman Damian Babis. I am proud of the achievements this season where mini rugby players have continued to show support to the senior teams, and grateful to the Club team players who come down on Sunday mornings to help with coaching. A highlight of the season has been the family BBQ when hundreds of children and family members enjoyed the mini rugby community atmosphere then cheered on against Hong Kong Scottish who had great support from the Flying Kukris mascots. A further highlight was the tour to the Bintan International tournament in Kuala Lumpar where we had over 200 parents and children in the tour party. Our season is not over yet, we still have out Taipan s event and a Lions tour to Australia organised we remain very busy! Finally, HKFC would like to thank the HKMRFU especially chairman Case Everaert, and all the clubs for their commitment to the development of mini rugby and support of festivals. Enjoy the Day!!!! 7 Under 12 COMPETITION FORMAT The U12s play in four pools which compete for the CUP, PLATE, BOWL and SHIELD. Each Pool has five teams that play in a round robin format. Teams are seeded according to the results of the U12 League, with adjustments for not playing same Club teams in pools A & B. Win 3 points, draw 2 points, loss 1 point if try scored, loss 0 points if no score. The 3rd/4th placed teams in Pools C & D will play in the Shield Semi Finals. The 1st/2nd placed teams in Pools C & D will play in the Bowl Semi Finals. The 3rd/4th placed teams in Pools A & B will play in the Plate Semi Finals. The 1st/2nd placed teams in Pools A & B will play in the Cup Semi Finals. In the event of a draw in the semifinals and finals the pool results count in the following order: Most points scored, highest aggregate tries scored, most tries scored, pool result between competing teams (if any). If still drawn first try scored in the match wins (if any). If still drawn the higher U12 league ranking wins. The Finals will be subject to 5 minutes golden try if the match is a draw. If still drawn after 5min additional time, the rules apply above including semifinal results to determine an overall winner. Clubs with more than one U12 team are required to submit a HKMRFU Team Sheet before 12pm to Tony Karton on Friday, 8 March observing the following criteria: Please list team squads on provided HMRFU Team Sheet document including identifying players that can play Front Row (FR), Hooker (H), Island (Is) or Peninsula (Pen) Representative. A player that has represented Peninsula or Island is expected to play in the Club s premier (top) side. They are not entitled to play down to help with a Club team playing in a lower division such as Plate, Bowl or Shield. The only exception to this rule is Front Row for safety reasons however it must be the last option and approved by Tony Karton, the Tournament Director. Where a Club has two sides in the same division, players cannot interchange between the sides. It must be separate squads for the festival. A player that has been identified to play for two teams from the same Club at the festival needs to be listed for both teams using the same line number on the for easy reference. Team sheets will be collated and distributed to Clubs on Friday evening. In the event of injury or sickness, teams sheets can be changed 15min before the team s first game. The will maintain the master team lists. If teams play a player not registered on the approved master team list at the, they will automatically forfeit the game. Richard Hawkes Trophy The HKFC Cup, Plate, Bowl and Shield will be competed for by the Under 12 Age Group, with the Cup winners being awarded the Richard Hawkes Trophy. CODE FOR COACHES You have the responsibility for your team and supporters EXERCISE IT! Remember that young players play for fun and enjoyment. Don t overload them with technical information and tactics Be reasonable in your demands on young players time, energy and enthusiasm. Remember that they have other interests and demands on their time Ensure that all players get a game. The just average players need and deserve equal time Players develop at different times and in different ways make allowances for their physical, emotional and mental maturity and development Winning isn t everything teach your players to enjoy taking part and performing to the best of their ability. Encourage each player to reach his or her potential Never abuse, yell, criticise or ridicule children for making mistakes or losing a game Remember that young people need a coach that they can respect. Be generous with praise when it is deserved and set a good example Teach young players that the laws of the game are mutual agreements that no one should evade or break Create opportunities to teach sportsmanship, just as you would in teaching the basic skills INSIST ON FAIR PLAY. Do not tolerate foul play, fighting, or foul language. Be prepared to take off an offending player Develop a team respect for the ability of opponents, as well as for the judgement of referees and opposing coaches CODE FOR PARENTS Do not force an unwilling child to participate Young people are involved for their enjoyment, not yours Encourage your child to understand and play within the rules Teach your child that taking part and trying their best is more important than winning Focus your child on practising skills, sportsmanship and being part of a team. Winning isn t everything and not everyone can score the winning try Support and encourage your child never criticise them for making mistakes. Console them for losing, but encourage them to try harder next time Turn defeat into victory by helping your child work towards skill improvement and good sportsmanship Do not publicly question the referee s judgement and never his/her honesty. There is no place for touchline rage in Youth Rugby Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from Youth Rugby Young people learn best by example. Applaud good play by your team and by members of the opposing team Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches, referees and administrators. They give of their time and resources to provide recreational activities for your child CODE FOR PLAYERS Play to enjoy rugby, not just to please you parents or coach Always try your best to improve your skills and play well Play within the rules and laws of the game Never argue with referees or coaches their decision is final, even if you think that they are wrong.
