2 WELCOME Combined Counties Premier Division Molesey vs. Farnham Town Saturday 7 th December Kick off 3pm Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Molesey for today s game against Farnham Town. Since my last notes we have had four games. The 1 st being against promotion rivals Epsom & Ewell. Like the Windsor game I thought we again dominated, we may not have had as many clear cut chances as we did against Windsor but possession wise and chances on the day we dominated. Once we drew level early in the second half I could only see one winner. Unfortunately they scored with a couple of minutes to go, totally against the run of play. We all celebrate a win but they went totally over the top, waited for us to come in from our warm down and then started going mad, the game had finished at least ten minutes earlier. Straight after the game fair enough and you expect a little bit of banter as you walk in but they took the mick. We still have to play them again and if we win they will be getting plenty, believe me! We then went to Ash in the cup and beat them 5-0, another clean sheet and another game where we were in control. We also mixed up the side a bit and those who came in did a brilliant job. Camberley away the least said about the better. They just whacked it as hard as they could, and rather than us playing our football we slipped into their trap and started whacking it as well. The few times we did get it down and play we got success but we didn t do enough of it on the day and the 0-0 score line really says all you need to know about the game. Tuesday we went to Leatherhead and gave a really good account of ourselves. We passed them off the pitch. When you get to a ground and you see a pitch like theirs it makes you want to pass the ball. If anything we over played, but I would much rather that than what we did against Camberley. We created chances but just couldn t get the ball in the net. I think they thought they just had to turn up and they would win the game, twenty minutes in and I think they would have changed their opinion as we were dominating. We could hear their manager through the wall at half time as he was going mental at them and for them also to change their formation to stop us playing is a compliment. Although we lost 1-0 there were plenty of positives to take from the game and we must take those into today s game. Today is another top of the table game. They come here only one place behind us in the table. We have got to take the game to them from the first whistle and play our passing game. We have not got players suited to smashing the ball down the pitch so we have to play to our strengths and that is passing the ball about. A win today will keep us in the pack at the top. It is so tight up there that we have got to keep winning and keep up the pressure on South Park and the others. After today we entertain South Park here on Tuesday, again another top of the table clash, before we travel to play Mole Valley on the Saturday. Enjoy the game! All the best, Lewy. 2

3 VISITING CLUB HISTORY Farnham Town Football Club is a senior level football club based in Farnham, Surrey, England. Established in 1906 through the merging of Farnham Bungs (the Farnham Brewery) and the Farnham Star. The club was one of the founder members of the London Spartan League in They reached the Fourth Round of the FA Vase in the season. At the end of the 1979/80 season Farnham Town left the London Spartan League and applied to the Combined Counties League, their application was accepted and they finished 4th in their first season. The 1986/87 season saw Farnham take second place to Ash United in the league campaign. The glory days finally arrived in the 1990/91 season when the club won the league title. In the 1991/92 season, the Town got a clean sweep of the major trophies by winning the Combined Counties Premier League, the Dan Air Elite Cup and the Dan Air Challenge Cup. Having won the league, the club applied and were accepted to the Diadora league, however funds for necessary ground improvements could not be generated which resulted in the club not having a league to play in for the 1992/93 season. In 1993/94 Farnham Town were accepted back into the Combined Counties League where they continue to ply their trade. From Farnham finished in the top six of the Premier Division for three consecutive seasons, in they finished in 13th position, then 10th in before suffering relegation from the Premier Division in season. They bounced straight back the following season but then endured four tough seasons back in the Premier Division, with bottom four finishes every season culminating in relegation back down to Division One in Again the club bounced straight back and in they won the Division One title under the guidance of Barry Bridger, but were denied promotion due to the Memorial Ground not meeting the desired grading by the league. The club then spent another four seasons in Combined Counties Division One. Farnham gained promotion from Combined Counties Division One in the season after finishing second behind Worcester Park. In Paul Tanner s first season at the helm he gained automatic promotion back to the Premier Division at the first attempt, which after only retaining four members of the side from the previous year s squad - who finished mid table, was quite an achievement. Paul Tanner s side also won the Combined Counties Fair Play Award for after going the whole season without having a man sent off, a record to be proud of. Also in their ranks, they had the league s top scorer for the season in the prolific Mark Corbett who amassed a career best of 32 league goals in 34 league matches to propel Farnham to promotion after signing from Sandhurst in the summer of In a very successful year for the club on the whole, Dean Nelson s reserve side finished second behind Mole Valley in the Combined Counties Reserve Division, improving on fourth position the previous season. Farnham ladies also finished second in their respective league to cap quite a remarkable season in Geoff Chapple s final season as Chairman. The chairman of Farnham Town for is Ray Bridger replacing Geoff Chapple, who previously managed Woking and Kingstonian and because of his continued involvement with Blue Square Bet South side Woking coupled with Farnham Town s promotion back to the Combined Counties top-flight, Geoff is sadly ineligible to continue both roles. Current first team manager and now in his fifth season at the club is Paul Tanner, alongside head coach Sean Birchnall who steered the club to 8 th position in the season; our highest position for some 15 years. 3

21 Leatherhead 1-0 Molesey Surrey Senior Cup 2 nd Round By Andrew Finch Molesey crashed out of their last meaningful cup competition of the season but were desperately unlucky to do so with a 1-0 Surrey Senior Cup defeat at Leatherhead. Leroy Griffiths' goal midway through the first half was all that separated the sides in a game that the Moles dominated for long periods, but as has regularly been the case over the past month or so they lacked either luck or composure in front of goal. The result means that the Moles have now drawn a blank in four of their last nine games in all competitions. However, the fact that they have scored 18 in the other five demonstrates that there's goals in the team and illustrates the need to take their chances, particularly early in the game in order to settle any nerves. Molesey went in to the game missing THREE keepers, meaning a debut for youth team prospect Jay Jerrard. He was blameless for the goal and pulled off a decent save in each half, but was largely untroubled by an ordinary looking Leatherhead side who topped the Ryman League Division One South as recently as last week. On a terrific if slightly bobbly pitch that was a credit to the Leatherhead groundstaff the opening exchanges were fairly quiet, with Jerrard tipping an effort from Mohamed Eisa over the bar, and James McShane sending a free kick on to the top of the net. As was the case against Epsom & Ewell ten days ago, an effort from Ross Chalke that kissed the bar on the way over was to prove costly, as within thirty second the opposition went up the other end and scored. Tom Windsor and Craig Lewington both fought for a loose ball in midfield that was played through to ex QPR forward Griffiths, who dinked an effort over Jerrard into the net. Ashby Charles only made his first team debut in the Southern Combination Cup at Ash last Tuesday but his pace and direct running caused the host problems all night, and his dangerous cross was turned over the bar by a home defender, who did well to avoid putting through his own net. Molesey started the second half strongly but the flow of the game was disrupted by a delay that bordered on the farcical ten minutes in for the officials to do the necessary formalities on the Leatherhead half-time substitution. However, other than booking Chalke for his first offence and letting other players off with countless misdemeanours the ref had a decent enough game. Another dangerous cross from Charles was inches away from the onrushing Chalke at the far post, who then drew a great save from Deren Ibrahim with a free header from McShane s corner. Charles again got in behind the home defence from McShane's clever pass and picked out Marvell ten yards from goal, but with the ball screaming to be hit first time he took too many chances and allowed defenders to block his effort. Leatherhead substitute Elie Kayembe's first contribution was to play a defence splitting pass between his goalkeeper and centre halves, Michael Essien style, which ended up falling very kindly for Marvell. But with Ibrahim in no-man's land Marvell's attempted lob from the edge of the box lacked the required height and landed weakly in Ibrahim's grateful arms. Jarrard made a good save at his near post during a rare foray into Molesey territory by the hosts, but as the clock ticked down the Moles piled on the pressure, forcing a number of corner and free-kicks in promising positions. McShane had a couple of efforts that cleared the bar but the hosts held on to set up a trip to Camberley Town in the next round. 21

27 From The Archives, The Moles By Chris Briscoe The real process of re-building the club, started this season, when newly-appointed manager, Martin Eede was looking around for better players and started off by reeling in a coach who was very well respected in local football as a player... TUITE IS OFF TO COACH MOLESEY. IN one of the most surprising moves in local football for the past few seasons, star Epsom and Ewell front man Tommy Tuite has joined struggling Molesey as player-coach. The shock signing is clear evidence of the determination to bring the good times back to Walton Road by new manager Martin Eede, who took over the reigns a month ago. Eede managed Redhill to second place in the London Spartan League last season and Tuite is expected to be only the first of several new signings by the Vauxhall-Opel League second division south outfit. Thirty-one year old Tuite has been a firm favourite at West Street since joining Epsom in 1973, apart from one short spell when he played for Carshalton. His remarkable record of 500 goals in 600 games made him a popular figure at Epsom and attracted a 1,600 crowd for his testimonial game against a Chelsea XI at the end of last season, when George Best guested for Epsom. A delighted Eede said: 'Tommy is still a top-class goal-getter and as a qualified coach his vast experience should be a major influence on the younger members of the squad'. Added Tuite: 'I've had a great time at Epsom and it was a wrench to leave, but the chance to get into coaching was too good to miss at this stage of my career. 'I know Molesey have been struggling in the past year, but they have shown a great will to survive and I am relishing the challenge of trying to help rebuild the club'. Epsom and Ewell will meet up with Tuite again next season as they were relegated to division two south last term! Molesey Isthmian League Division Two (South) Date H/A Opposition Comp. Res. 30 Saturday 15th August 1987, Pre-season Friendly Molesey: 0, Croydon: 1 Croydon, under new manager, Steve Chapman, this season had their final pre-season run out at Molesey on Saturday and won 1 0. The goal came through John Daly, who scored from a Simpson cross. The baking conditions did nothing to enhance the football, neither did a poor playing area. Illness forced John Baker to withdraw, but Martin Kennard came in at right back. John Double came on in the second half for Miles, joining attack with Alec Jackson moving to midfield. Molesey's first meeting with Tuite's old club, Epsom (newly-relegated from division one), came at home in the first qualifying round of the F.A. Cup... Saturday 12th September 1987, F.A. Cup: 1st Qualifying Round Molesey: (0) 1, Epsom & Ewell: (0) 2 TOMMY CAN'T STOP THE EXIT. IN just under two weeks time, Epsom will travel the short distance from this Walton road fixture, to take on Met. Police in the second qualifying round of this FA Cup competition. There they will also face Vauxhall Opel League second division opposition, such are the quirks of fate of the FA Cup. This match must surely have been one of the friendliest cup competitions ever with former Epsom favourite Tommy Tuite, now player-coach at Molesey, endeavouring to do all he could to knock-out his former pals. And in correct comic-book style, Tuite had a telling hand in Molesey's opening goal just a minute into the second half. Tuite took a through ball from Bill Allardyce and turned for goal, only to be held back by Ray Metz and Roland GRYZBECK tucked away the resultant penalty. Molesey were still celebrating four minutes later 30

31 when Epsom equalised when Neil Robson drilled a free kick into the six-yard box, where Brian PERKINS forced a header home as Molesey players claimed frantically that he had used a hand to Control the ball. Worse was to come for the home side when, after 55 minutes, a Gryzbeck corner curled straight into the Epsom goal, only for an infringement on the Epsom 'keeper Dave Crawley. Sixteen minutes later the visitors scored the decisive goal when a Jimmy Richardson free kick on the right was knocked back into the middle over his head by Perkins from the left of the area for Clive GARTELL to steer past the helpless 'keeper Clive Offer. Interesting to note is that the two Epsom scorers, Clive Gartell and Brian Perkins would be key players a few years later, when Molesey were rising up the Isthmian League ranks. Molesey were more successful in the Vase, and we first saw London Spartan League side, Brimsdown Rovers at Walton Road for the first time ever... Saturday 19th September 1987, F.A. Vase: Preliminary Round Molesey: (2) 2, Brimsdown Rovers: (0) 1 Victory for Molesey. THIS was scrappy game last Saturday for Molesey, not helped by a torrential downpour during the game, but even so the home side got off to a good start. From one of their first attacks Molesey cut straight through the opponent's defence and Roland Gryzbeck found himself with the all at his feet so he obligingly stuck it in the back of the net to give them the lead. They stayed on top for most of the match, Rovers only causing them serious trouble on a couple of occasions but they should have scored from a penalty which they received after a quick break from their midfield. Challenge. Molesey goalkeeper Clive Offer, however, was equal to the challenge and spectacularly saved the penalty, pushing it wide and safe. And five minutes later Molesey had scored their second when Tommy Tuite cut into the penalty area, beat his defender and cut the ball back which Roland headed but was cleared. Unfortunately for the Rovers it fell to Billy Allardyce who scored his first goal for the club for two years. Late on in the game the visitors caught the Molesey defence square to score an impressive consolation goal but it was too late to make any difference. The following report of the first round Vase game, was published in a Molesey programme (Vs Whyteleafe), and was written by our goalkeeper, Clive Offer: Saturday 17th October 1987, F.A. Vase: 1st Round Proper Molesey: (0) 0 (1) 2, Burnham Ramblers: (0) 0 (0) 0 (aet) This cup encounter turned out to be a much tighter affair than many people may have expected. Moles had the better of the early exchanges with Johnny Egan coming closest after 20 mins with a fine header, which unfortunately struck Tommy Tuite who was on the goal line and Burnham were able to clear the danger. Molesey continued to dominate the first half but couldn't break down the packed Burnham defence. Clive Offer had to turn a fierce drive away for a corner, the danger was cleared and Bobby Youngs made a fine run down the left and crossed into the box only to see Tuite volley over the bar from inside the six yard box. In the last minute of the first half, Burnham struck the post from close range. The second half was again fiercely contested with chances falling to both sides, Frank Hanafin having Molesey's best chance, but the keeper blocked his effort. Extra time brought a change in fortune for Molesey when Young again linked well with Hanafin down the left and Hanafin's pin point cross was met well by Tuite who struck the ball home. In the first minute of the second period, Offer produced a good save tipping away a long range effort from Butler, with his defence waiting for an offside decision. Substitute Micky Rose wrapped up the game 5 mins from time with a superbly struck left foot shot which left the keeper clutching at thin air. 'Molesey are on the Wembley trail'. 31

32 Molesey's goalkeeper, Clive Offer, also wrote the following: Saturday 31st October 1987, Surrey Senior Cup: 3rd Qualifying Round Malden Vale: (1) 1, Molesey: (0) 0 Molesey made an early exit from the S.S.C, in a game where they never really came to terms with a heavy pitch and an enthusiastic Vale side. They should, however, have taken the lead after just 5 mins when Barry Stone was set free by Tuite but his effort was saved by Cook. Kelvin Phillips made a superb goal line clearance after 15 mins and this was followed by two saves from Offer as Malden Vale started to stamp some authority on the game. Billy Allardyce came closest for Mole's when he had a great long range effort saved by Cook after half an hour. Molesey's inability to clear a long throw after 35 mins allowed Scott to score when he was allowed far too much time in the penalty area and he fired home with some ease. Going down the slope in the second half didn't prove any easier for Mole's, but Micky Rose did come close with 2 headers following Gryzbeck's corners. Malden Vale created more chances towards the end, but Offer and his defence were equal to these efforts and were able to keep the score line respectable. In the second round of the Vase, and before a crowd of 126, Molesey travelled to Romford to take on the previous season s beaten semi-finalists, Collier Row (Report from the Romford-Havering Observer) Saturday 7th November 1987, F.A. Vase: 2nd Round Proper Collier Row: (0) 0, Molesey: (1) 2 No luck for Row in FA Vase. ANY dreams Collier Row may have had at bettering last season s FA Vase Semi Final place and reaching Wembley were abruptly shattered at Sungate on Saturday. Despite Row s dominating most of the match with Molesey it was the team from Division 2 (South) of the Vauxhall Opel League who rode their luck and grabbed victory. Row created enough chances to win comfortably, but the ball stayed out of the net, and it was Molesey who broke out to deliver 2 killer punches in the 15th and 75th minutes. We were unlucky said a disappointed Alan Marson, We had enough chances to win easily but we didn t take them. I m a bit choked because the Vase has become a bit special to us. A biased home report? Not a bit of it! I was at that game, the amount of defending we had to do was incredible and how the ball stayed out of our net, I ll never know. In all the (almost) 30 years of watching the Moles this one has to rank as one of our luckiest wins... The Third round of the Vase saw a very tough trip to Beazer Homes (Southern League Southern Division) side, Hounslow. The Hounslow, Feltham & Hanworth Times reported... Saturday 12th December 1987, F.A. Vase 3rd Round Proper Hounslow: (0) (2) 4, Molesey: (1) (2) 2 (aet) Steve Jarvis returns to lead Hounslow to extra time win. HOUNSLOW continued on the Wembley trail when a crowd favourite Steve Jarvis, gave them victory over Molesey and another home tie, against Chalfont St. Peter, in the fourth round of the F.A. Vase. In the 57th minute Jarvis came off the bench and immediately livened up the home attack. He hustled, bustled and used his pace to great effect as Hounslow twice came back from behind to take the honours and their place in the last 32 of the competition. Until Jarvis introduction, the signs for Hounslow had not been good. Molesey s sweeper system had comfortably shut out any goal bound attempts and Tommy 32

33 Tuite had given the visitors the lead on the stroke of halftime. But after the interval it was a different story. Hounslow regained their shape their passing more purposeful and Jarvis added punch up front. For their part, Molesey responded with a series of excellent counter attacks as the game flowed from one end to the other. The goals had to come and three did, in a 10 minute spell. Skipper John Turner cracked home the equalizer a stinging 25 yard free kick, in the 63rd minute only for Molesey to regain the lead within a minute through a Costelloe penalty, after Mark Bridges was adjudged to have handled. Jon Denton then managed to miss from two yards and Jarvis blasted another good chance over the bar. But, in the 73rd minute, Jarvis set Steve Smith free on the right and when his cross was handled by Costelloe, Ray Olliffe did the honours from the spot to level the scores at 2 2. The game went into extra time and Hounslow made the perfect start, when that man Jarvis pounced to poke the ball home, after Robbie Holland s header had been carried away by Molesey keeper Clive Offer. With the bit now between their teeth, other chances followed for Hounslow, Smith hit the bar with a firm header, and the lively Joe Auguste blemished a fine performance by shooting wide from close range. Finally, in the last minute, Hounslow wrapped up the game. Jarvis cut in from the right, fired across goal and Adam Wickens slid the ball over the line. The result left manager Gordon Bartlett delighted with his side s attitude in fighting back, and believing that the result will do wonders to lift the team s confidence. He added: The introduction of Steve Jarvis made all the difference. Mark Bolton was struggling with a groin strain and Jarvis is effective because he puts people under pressure. Hopefully we can now transfer our Vase form into improving our league position. Hounslow: Ricky Murphy, Mark Bridges, Robbie Holland, John Turner, Jon Denton, Steve Smith, Ray Olliffe, Adam Wickens, Mark Taylor, Mark Bolton (Steve Jarvis 57), Joe Auguste Molesey: Clive Offer, John Pleece, Dave Middleton (Neil Pinchbeck 117), Kelvin Phillips, Steve Carter, Bob Youngs (Roland Gryzbeck 103), Billy Allardyce, Noel Costelloe, Frank Hanafin, Tommy Tuite, Barry Stone Saturday 16th January 1988 saw the moles without a first team fixture, when a sudden phone call from Spurs, two days before, produced a hastily arranged mid-season friendly. Report from the Esher News & Mail: Saturday 16th January 1988, Friendly Molesey: 0, Tottenham Hotspur: 5 Molesey meet the giants from Tottenham Hotspur. FOLLOWING a surprise telephone call from Tottenham on Thursday night this rather unlikely match was arranged, and the London based team made their way to the Walton Road club on Saturday morning to the delight of Molesey supporters. The home team, though, were outclassed by their visitors who fielded four international players, Ray Clemence, Gary Stevens, John Metgod and Nico Claesen, who were looking for match fitness. It was not a match that went all Spurs way, despite the disappointing scoreline. Moles worked hard to contain their talented opponents with some success but as the team weakened Spurs found the gaps in their defence and to the obvious despair of the goalkeeper left their number one to cope with whatever was thrown his way. Molesey manager, Martin Eede, told our reporter at the end of the match that 'It was good experience just to 33

34 Go out on the same pitch as them. I am disappointed' he continued 'with a few of the goals which we gave them rather than letting them earn them. 'We can learn a lot from matches like this. I don't think they showed all that much more skill than some of the Molesey side. It was their discipline on the ball that most impressed me. We must look and learn from teams like this'. Mr. Eede admitted that it has been a difficult season so far, but he is optimistic: 'We've been playing well and have got some good draws. We just can't seem to get a win. Other newspaper quotes of the above match were... Surrey Comet:...Afterwards the famous four (Note: Internationals, Ray Clemence, Nico Claesen, Johnny Metgod and Gary Stevens Chris) paid tribute to Molesey's team and stayed behind for half an hour to sign autographs before pushing off to watch the first team against Coventry at White Hart Lane. Now for the Surrey Herald:...'Spurs called us on Thursday night,' said manager Martin Eede. Their midweek reserves fixture had been called off due to bad weather and they were desperate for a game. We were more than happy to help out. 'It was good experience for the lads, and we can do nothing but learn from the game.' Spurs had a lot to teach in team work, ball control, discipline and sheer fitness. Johnny Metgod soon took control of midfield, getting involved in anything and everything. Meanwhile Nico Claesen jinked and skipped his way goalwards whenever he got a touch on the ball showing just why spurs spent 600,000 to bring him to Britain. The one Spurs player deserving of any sympathy was Clemence who spent most of the match trying to stave off frostbite in his deserted goalmouth. Martin Eede said, the main difference was the way Spurs moved the ball around so quickly. Doug Livermore, reserve team coach, was complementary about Molesey. 'We were delighted to get a game. We have several first team players coming back from injury and we wanted to give them a hard match, and Molesey gave us that. The story of how the match got arranged is interesting. On Thursday 14th January, club secretary, John Chambers, got a telephone call from Terry Venables! The future England manager explained how the Spurs reserve side had not got a game on that day, due to a late reserve fixture cancellation. So they looked down all the leagues to see which other club playing that particular Saturday, and eventually wasn t reached Molesey! There was a pause on John's side of the phone, and Terry responded, You don't believe me, do you?!! John replied, Yeah, piss off! Terry answered by saying, Look, I'm going to give you my phone number now, you get your manager to call me, and we'll take it from there! John did, Martin Eede phoned up, and the game was on - on Saturday! A sad note to end with, however; Jimmy Millar, the head-mole, and a well-known Spurs fan, was not informed of the match, and even heard it as he lived around the corner in 3 Grange Road. He just thought it was a hastily arranged first team Vs reserves match or something, so he didn't bother going in to investigate. When he ambled into the club at 8pm that evening and was informed that many of his heroes had been drinking in the 34

35 Molesey bar well... I'll leave it to your imagination to guess how he felt...!!! 87/88 saw Molesey also take part in the Southern Combination Cup a competition they had not played in since 1975/76! We also had not played Walton & Hersham in a competitive match since the Amateur Cup tie in 1960/61, when we lost 2 9! In fact, I believe this is Walton's first ever visit to Walton Road... Tuesday 2nd February 1988, Southern Combination Cup: 1st Round Molesey: (0) 0, Walton & Hersham: (3) 6 Swans send Molesey crashing out. THREE goals in each half sent Molesey crashing out of this first round Southern Combination Cup tie, as Walton turned on the heat at a cold and windy Walton road on Tuesday evening. Although Molesey gave Swans a few uneasy moments, hitting a post in the opening quarter of an hour, and the bar in the second half, the result never seemed in doubt after the home side were three down at the break. Walton opened the scoring in the 19th minute when a pass from Thornton out to David Jones on the left was hammered home into the roof of the net. Molesey held their visitors to this single goal until ten minutes before half-time. A free kick to Walton on the edge of the box saw Steve Clarke send a curling shot into the top corner of goal. Three minutes later a mix-up between Molesey's goalkeepr and defender let Paul Thornton in to slide the ball under the goalkeeper to make it 3 0. Molesey put Walton under some brief pressure in the second half after a goalmouth melee. Mickey Rose hit the cross bar after 64 minutes, but not before Steve Russell had put Swans four up, six minutes earlier, with a simple tap after Massey's shot was blocked. One of the best goals of the night came from Russell who, collecting the ball from inside his own half, was away down the middle, got a knock back off a defender and then unleashed a cracker from 18 yards which zipped past the goalkeeper. Andy Dear completed the scoring when he netted from the penalty spot in the 89th minute. Only a few hours before the game Walton defenders Andy Dear and Dougie Hughes learnt that they had been selected to play for an FA XI against AFA on Wednesday (February 10). Hard to believe that eight seasons later, the Moles were in the Premier Division and that Pete Bowers and Simon Carthew were getting into trouble for printing those 'Six of the best' T-shirts! but more of that when I do the 1995/96 season, which will hopefully be in the last home programme of the season most probably Vs Camberley Town... Leatherhead and District Sunday League: Division Four (published mid-april) PLD W D L PTS H A 1. Fetcham Ionians Reserves Apex Wallington Green Dorking Casuals Langley Vale AFC Ewell Chessington Rovers reserves Chessington Community Centre Molesey Social XXX XXX 10. The Oakes res As you can see, not all results were known, but the Social side seemed to be fairy erratic as regards results. Although second bottom, they probably finished about mid-table in the end considering all the games they had in hand. Why? They reached the final of the Sunday Junior Cup, where they took on Third Division Banstead Orient. Sunday 17th April 1988, Leatherhead & District Sunday Junior Cup: Final Molesey Social: (1) 1 2, Banstead Casuals: (1) 1 1 (aet) Molesey Social's Cup Win. MOLESEY Social took the Leatherhead and District Junior Cup with an action-packed win over Banstead Casuals last week and rounded off their recent 35

36 Unbeatable form with a 6 0 league win at the weekend. Trap. Banstead played an offside trap for the entire match and Molesey Social had a lot of problems breaking through on the attack. It was thanks mainly to some good tactical work from ex-molesey player and captain Frank Hanley that Social came through to take the cup. Pierced. The first half was fairly uneventful, with Molesey dominating the play but unable to put any points on the board. They broke through the offside trap twice but the shots came to nothing. The game was decided in the second half. Again it was a matter of beating the offside trap, but this time Philip Holroyd made no mistake with his shot and thumped the ball in from outside the area while still on the run. With 10 minutes to go, Benny Penfold pierced the defence and headed the ball into the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed as the linesman's flag was up for offside. Then in the last minute of the game Banstead equalised and the match went into extra time. But Molesey were not to be denied. Straight from the restart they were on the attack and forced a corner almost immediately. Benny Penfold picked up the cross and slammed it into the back of the net to give them the cup to take back home with them. A special mention must go to Molesey's Ian Riggs who played the match with one eye closed after an injury sustained in the early minutes of the game. On Saturday Molesey Social proved their supremacy once again with a 6 0 victory. Hat-tricks were scored by Benny Penfold and Steve Wilkinson. Nothing else from that cup-run is known, except a 3 1 win at Wallington Green in the Quarters. Frank Hanley, was an ex-mole from , but also, Benny Penfold would play for the Moles in a few seasons time, when they were to move up the divisions... Another team in Molesey, also in their second year of formation, Molesey United won Division Three of the Kingston & District League by seven clear points, this time I do not have a league table, but here are most of their results...
