5 DANNO Good afternoon and a warm welcome to the Glass World Stadium. It's a particular pleasure to welcome Ross Wilding and his Team Bury staff and players for today's game. We were over at Ram Meadow just a few weeks ago and this re-arranged game means that we get to play our return fixture more quickly than either of us expected. It was indeed a pleasure to play at Ram Meadow. The quality of the playing surface was excellent, which is always a welcomed sight and Team Bury tried, and managed, to play the kind of football the surface deserves. It was a very good game of football with both teams striving to play in a similar, passing orientated manner. I'm sure that'll be the same today. A final reflection of our visit to Bury was the hospitality offered to us. We were made to feel very welcomed throughout the day, and I hope we can reciprocate in the same manner. Reflecting on our first ever FA Vase appearance against Thrapston last week gives me great pleasure. I felt we worked very hard to put into practice some of the things which Matt Joseph and Neil O' Donohue have been working on with us FROM THE MANAGER on the training ground. The willingness of the players to listen and learn led to good application in the match and it was a very satisfying performance which gets us an appearance in the next round against our neighbours Godmanchester Rovers. I'm looking forward to it! I was also pleased with the discipline of the players last S aturday, as I have been so far this season. I'm very keen to see the game played in the right spirit, combining competitiveness with respect for each other, the opposition and the officials. I hope that we see that attitude dominating today's match even as both teams strive for victory. Thanks for being here today. Enjoy! 8 THE VISITORS welcome to TEAM BURY Today we welcome Team Bury Football Club to The Glassworld Stadium. Team Bury was formed in 2005, then under the name of West Suffolk College FC. The team made up of students from the West Suffolk College Sports Academy were elected into Division Two of the Kent Blaxill Essex and Suffolk Border League Division Two. In its inaugural season the team were promoted having achieved runners up spot in the Essex and Suffolk Border League Division Two behind Champions Brightlingsea Regent. The following season the team went one better and they were crowned champions of Division One. The top two places were reversed from the previous season with Brightlingsea Regent runners up. At the beginning of season 2007/08 the team were forced to uproot from its adopted home pitch at Gainsborough Sports Centre in Ipswich and were forced to find a new home that met the minimum ground standards for the Essex and Suffolk Border League Premier Division. A groundshare arrangement was agreed with Bury Town FC to use Ram Meadow as a home pitch. young team did win the Premier Division Fair Play Award. Season 2008/08 again saw Team Bury submit an application and a successful season saw the team finish as runners up in the ESBL Premier Division. It was a close run thing with Team Bury and West Bergholt neck and neck for most of the campaign. In the end West Bergholt beat Team Bury in a crunch match towards the end of the season and went on to win the title by five points. However, Team Bury did have the consolation of winning the Fair Play Award for the second successive season. In June 2009 Team Bury were duly elected to join the Ridgeons League Division One at the commencement of the 2009/10 season. In 2010 Team Bury won the Suffolk Senior Cup at Portman Road. 2010/11 Season saw the side finish 13th in the league with a very young squad. This season will see some of these players staying on with the side for their second or third season. To acknowledge their position in the local football community within Bury St Edmunds, a decision was made by the committee that ran the team, to change its name to Team Bury. The first season in the Premier Division yielded an eighth place finish and although an application to join the Ridgeons League was submitted the eighth place achieved by the team did not meet the promotion criteria. 15 CLUB HISTORY Cambridge University Press Football Club was founded in 1893, making us the oldest club in the city of Cambridge affiliated to the Cambridgeshire Football Association. We are older than both Cambridge City (1908) and Cambridge United (1912). The oldest club in the city, however, is Cambridge University AFC, who enjoy a direct affiliation to the Football Association will see our 120th birthday and we proudly remain an amateur club. It took the club 20 years to win its first honour, claiming the prestigious Cambridgeshire Senior Cup (Now Challenge Cup) in 1913/14. In 1928/29 the Cambridgeshire League Division 2 title was won, with the Division 1 title sealed two years later. The club won the Cambridgeshire Premier League for the only time in its history in 1934/35. On 31st August 1932, the club made history by becoming the first team to visit the Abbey Stadium, losing 2-0 to the then Abbey United. It was some 30 years later that further success was achieved when the club won the Division 2b title in 1967/68. The club had a long wait for the next piece of silverware, which was won in 1985/86 with the capturing of the Cambridgeshire Junior Cup. The last 20 years has seen the clubs honours list increase dramatically. In 1992/93 the Division 2a title was won, with the reserves winning Division 3b a year later in 1993/94. The reserves gained double success in 2002/03 winning the Division 3b title and the John Ablett Cup. In 2003/04 the Cambridgeshire Senior B title was won, and a year later runners-up spot in Senior A was achieved to send the club into the Kershaw Premier League. During the 2004/05 season, Nigel Dixon was appointed Manager. The clubs first year in the Kershaw Premier in 2005/06 saw a respectable fourth place finish. For 2006/07, Cambridge University Press came on board as the clubs major sponsor, with the club benefiting from new club clothing and equipment bearing the Cambridge University Press logo. All three teams did not disappoint in 2006/07, with the First Team finishing 3rd in the KPL, Reserves 4th (and winning the Cambridgeshire Junior Cup) and the A Team 3rd. Season 2007/08 saw further success with the First Team finishing 4th, but claiming the Kershaw Premier League Cup with a 2-1 victory over Waterbeach at Histon s Glassworld Stadium. Jordan McDermott scored both Press goals. The reserves won Division 2a without losing a game and retained the Junior Cup, whilst the A Team won Division 3a. The club also created a link with local junior side Fulbourn Falcons, with Falcon s Under 16 s using the Cass Centre for home matches. Falcon s won the Colts League and Cup double that season. In 2008/09 the First Team again finished 3rd in the Kershaw CLUB HISTORY Premier League and were runners-up in the Challenge Cup to Fulbourn Institute. The reserves finished 3rd in 1a missing promotion by one point and the A Team finished in 4th place. The newly formed Youth Team finished runners-up in the Eastern Junior Alliance Under 18 Suffolk Division and won the Magners Cup, quite an achievement with most of the side aged under 17. A number of youth team players represented the senior sides throughout the season. 2009/10 saw further success with the First Team finishing as runners-up in the Kershaw Premier league, the reserves missing out on promotion by one point again and the A Team finishing as Division 2a Champions. The Veterans won the inaugural Cambridgeshire FA Veterans Cup, whilst the under 18's were once again runners-up in the Eastern Junior Alliance and the newly formed under 15's finished 4th in their debut Eastern Junior Alliance season. Eight members of the under 15 squad also represented Cambridge Schools in the English Schools Trophy where they finished as runners-up to Liverpool Schools, with the final played at Anfield. The First team s second placed finish allowed us to apply for promotion to the Ridgeons Eastern Counties League Division One. The 2010/11 season saw Press finish in a creditable fourth placed, just outside the promotion places. The reserves had a fantastic campaign winning the BIS Division One championship and promotion to Kershaw League football. The A team maintained their BIS 2a status, the Under 16 s finished in third place in the Eastern Junior Alliance and the Veterans were runners-up in the Cambridgeshire Veterans Cup. 2011/12 season saw a new era as we entered a partnership with Histon FC that enabled us to home games at The Glassworld Stadium, with Histon using the Cass Centre for training. The first team finished eighth in the Ridgeons League Division One.The Reserves side earned a second successive promotion, finishing as runners-up in Senior B and gaining promotion to Senior A, one level below the Kershaw Preier. The A team finished in 7th place in Division 2a. At the end of the 2011/12 season, manager Nigel Dixon resigned. The club moved quickly to install former Histon and Cambridge City manager, Graham Daniels into the role. For this season we are once again carrying a local charity on our First Team shirts, Following previous seasons, where we have raised over 2,00 for the Teenage Cancer Trust, Cystic Fibrosis Trust and Red Balloon Learner Centres, this year our club charity is Romsey Mill. We also continue to support the Cambridge & District Schools FA, sponsoring the team kits and tracksuits and allowing games to be played at the Cass Centre. 15

18 NON LEAGUE PAPER The Non-League Paper Programme Column By Matt Badcock EVERY football team has been wronged on the pitch at some point in their history. Be it a goal against allowed to stand even though the striker was two yards offside or a stonewall penalty that is waved away. Of course these occurrences happen, somewhere, every week. It s the decisions that come along once in a blue moon that really get the supporters goat. Take last week s FA Cup replay between Bashley and Gosport Borough. Evo-Stik Southern Premier Bash lost 3-2 after extra-time. But before that they had gone into a 3-2 lead themselves. Or so they thought. James Stokoe s effort had crossed the line only for Gosport keeper Nathan Ashmore to kick the ball through a hole in the net in frustration at conceding the goal. Referee Will Bull then awarded a corner. Now this was clearly an unintentional mistake, albeit a grave one, from the match officials. Bashley, managed by Frank Gray, are understandably annoyed that Gosport players didn t own up, or let their visitors score from the resulting corner. According to manager Alex Pike, more than half a dozen of his players came to him saying it was unquestionably a goal. None of them told the ref. Gray has previous in good sportsmanship. When he was in charge of Woking in 2007 he ordered his side to stand aside and allow Grays a free goal. Gentlemanly acts restore our faith in a game that is often seen to be sinking further into a pit of despair particularly at the cash-rich levels where diving and faking is common practice. A lot of people have been quick to criticise Gosport. We wouldn t want to win like that, they say. But can fans really preach the holier than thou line? Would you really have the same feelings if it was your team benefitting? If it meant winning the league or getting one over your rivals? Be honest now. It s easy to justify it in your mind. When Ukraine looked to have scored against England in Euro 2012 only for the officials to wave on play, thoughts immediately turned to South Africa. At the 2010 World Cup Frank Lampard s shot against Germany had clearly crossed the line but it wasn t given. Two years later was payback for that, we told ourselves. Sometimes it s just too tempting to take the gift and keep schtum. A bit like Monopoly when the banker gives you too much change. In an ideal world you d give it back. But you know at some point in future the board game gods will deal you a bad hand. And, especially in sport, we don t live in an ideal world. 18

The previous three seasons has seen us raise over 2,000 for our selected charities. In 2008/2009 season our charity was the Teenage Cancer Trust, in 2009/2010 the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and last season we supported Red Balloon Learner Centres. CUP FC raises money in a number of ways - we have donated 50p from every paid admission to our first team home matches, as well as holding a Christmas and Easter draw. We were also able to host a charity day, where admission to the ground was free and spectators could donate a fee to our charity. Our First team wear the club charity on their playing kit in place of the traditional sponsor, with an aim to raise awareness of the charity in the East Anglian area, whilst the reserve and A team s also carry a previous sponsors logo on their shirts. Romsey Mill is a Christian charity committed to overcoming disadvantage, challenging injustice and promoting social inclusion with young people, children and families. We work with around 2500 people each year, including: young mothers and fathers, young people on the margins of society who may be involved in offending, young people struggling to engage fully with education, families with pre-school children, young people with an autistic spectrum condition who have few social Opportunities. Our work is long term, relational and needs-led. We work with participants to develop their skills and to enable their progress towards training, work and positive involvement in the community. Romsey Mill is a Sure Start Children s Centre, offering a full programme of support for families and carers with children up to five-years-old. Find out more at
