4 a welcome from the chairman ALAN GOUT DORKING FC - BACK IN TOWN Welcome to Dorking FC at Westhumble - our home venue for what is quite a landmark year in the history of our club. I would like to extend a warm welcome to our visitors today - all the players, management, staff and supporters of South Park FC Reserves. With South Park s first team enjoying a good second season establishing themselves in the Ryman League South Division, the Reserves have also had a stronger second season in the Combined Counties League. A Jimmy Brazil brace earned us a decent point in the corresponding away fixture last October, so we can hopefully look forward to another competitive game this evening. With this game today and our home game with Farleigh Rovers this coming Saturday, we ll be bringing the curtain down on our first team season n the beautiful surroundings of Westhumble. So I d like to take this opportunity to thank Marc White, Jeremy Pain, Chris Moon and all the staff of Dorking Wanderers for accommodating us here this year. They truly have enabled us to run our games feeling at home, reflected in the attendances which have regularly been amongst the very best in the division. In turn, that has enabled us to run Dorking FC on a financially stable footing for the first time in the three years since our Community Interest Company took over the running of the club. 04 At the same time, as you will know, we have forged very strong relationships which means we will all move to the rebuilt stadium at Meadowbank in the summer with football in Dorking having a real chance to stride forward at all levels. Under the one club town plans for 2017/18, I m absolutely confident that many of the young players you see representing Dorking on the pitch today you will be able to see at Meadowbank next season. They can all look forward not only to returning to the town s

5 traditional home of football, but to enjoying a long and successful future in football locally. But of course, it take more than just players to make a club and, as we approach the end of our home season here at Westhumble, I would like to thank all those who have given their time so generously to ensure that everything runs smoothly - our volunteer Matchmakers who ensure everyone who comes along gets a good welcome. Tracey Killick has perhaps become one of the most popular people in the Combined Counties League today. Her match day catering for players and officials always receives the highest of accolades from those lucky enough to be able to sample it. Visiting officials have been known to leap into spontaneous hugs as they sample her post-match Pasta Bolognaise! The rest of Killick family - Paul, Scott and Dan - have also been tremendous this year, helping out enthusiastically wherever and whenever needed. The success of our games here at Westhumble owes much to the dedication of Team Killick. I d also like to thank Peter Knight, a long-standing servant of Dorking FC, who has been stewarding in the car park before hosting visitors in the Board Room with charm, good humour and quiet efficiency throughout the year. And alongside Peter, we have Colin Styles - another long-term Chicks stalwart - who, despite having a longer memory of Dorking games than almost anyone here today, remains the sprightliest ball boy in the league. Running the bar and kitchen this season has ensured that all our games have covered their costs this season - and for that we must thank Jane Mahony, Sam Agent, Paula Gout, Heather Mahoney- Simister, Fiona Rabbetts, Una Austin, Pauline May, Lydia Rabbetts and Kezia Mahony. Another longstanding supporter, Rob Watson, has also pitched in this season, in the vital role of collecting the gate money on the turnstile. And if there s anyone I ve forgotten here, please accept my sincere apologies. Although we come to the end of first team home games here this week, there s still plenty of Dorking FC action to come at Westhumble. The Under 18s have a number of home games to play in the prestigious Ryman Youth League - notably a big clash with Woking FC Academy on Thursday 30th March. The away fixture finished 3-3, so it would be good to see as many people down here as possible that evening, to cheer on the town s up-and-coming youth team players. Meanwhile, enjoy the game today and I hope to see you here again for the game against Farleigh Rovers on Saturday. Kind Regards Alan Gout Chairman, Dorking FC 05

7 DFC PLAYER PROFILE PAUL GOUGH Age: 27 Position: Centre Back Previous Club: Sutton United, Epsom & Ewell, Molesey, Chessington & Hook United Place of Birth: Croydon Lives: Sutton Occupation: Chartered Building Surveyor Goughy is that most unusual of players a footballer who actually enjoys running. He s currently running four to five times a week, covering up to 50 kilometers. I just like it, he says. I ran for Surrey and Merton when I was at school and, when I had a break from playing football a little while ago, running filled in the time. And it was a good way to get home from work! But his current regime isn t just a commute, Paul s building up to running the Paris Marathon next month in aid of Dementia UK He ran his first marathon around 18 months ago in Berlin. Why Berlin? I always wanted to go there and running the marathon is a fantastic way to see it, he says, before adding My aim is to do the five majors before I m 35. After Berlin, I ve got London, New York, Boston and Chicago to go. Paul came back to football this season after taking a break to concentrate on his chartered exams for his professional career, and has provided leadership and experience for the younger members of the squad. Although his season was interrupted by an operation that means that he must now wear a distinctive protective mask. I ve broken my nose four or five times, he explains. I had a septoplasty at Epsom and then broke it again. So I needed the operation to help with breathing. The drilled into my nose four times, he says adding perhaps just a bit too much information. Despite needing the mask for the rest of his playing career, Paul says the operation was a success. It s really helped me get fit, he says, and it s cured my snoring. The missus is delighted! You can read about why Paul is running the Paris Marathon for Dementia UK, and find details of how to sponsor him later in this programme. Please do give him your support. 07

17 MATCH REPORT dorking fc 0 STAINES LAMMAS FC 3 Saturday 11th March 2017 Combined Counties League Division One Two first half defensive lapses cost Dorking the game against Staines Lammas, despite staging a strong second half display with an exceptionally youthful squad. With little to compete for in the remaining games of the season, Dorking have kept their eyes fixed firmly the future and accelerated their development of talented young and local players, fielding no fewer than seven teenagers the starting line-up. For nearly half an hour, the young Chaicks matched their more experienced visitors. Louie Stanton-Cockle was combative, supported by Steve Harcombe and Will Hearn, while Will Conroy was cultured at centre back alongside the ever-dependable Paul Gough. Chances were scarce at either end, a scuffed shot from Andy Miller after good work on the right from Ryan Lunn the closest that Dorking came to breaking the deadlock. But there were warning signs that the Chicks would need to maintain their concentration to keep Staines Lammas at bay when, from a long throw, a free header by Jamie Pearce glanced just wide of the right hand post. If that was something of a let off, Dorking paid the price for failing to close down their opponents on 29 minutes. After a spell of Staines pressure, the Chicks stood off in the box, allowing Lammas striker John Nunn the time and space to fire off a shot from ten yards, rattling the left upright before rebounding into the net and giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. Undeterred, Dorking responded well - the Staines keeper was at full stretch to palm away a dangerous ball swung in by Stanton-Cockle, and Andy Miller turned well in the box but his goal bound shot was blocked. The Chicks were showing an admirable determination to play out from the back, but were exposed on 40 minutes by a rare slack pass from the defence into midfield. Accepting the gift, the ball went straight to Staines Tim Hayden on the right of the box and he slipped it low past the onrushing keeper Charlie McTigue for a 2-0 lead. Louie Stanton-Cockle was impressive as the Chicks gave it a go in the second half. If the errors disrupted Dorking s fluency towards the end of the first half, they certainly put it behind them after the break, playing largely in the Staines Lammas half. But with a two-goal cushion, the visitors were able to sit back and proved difficult to break down - a header over the bar from a corner was the only real section half chance before the hour mark. Gradually, the determined Dorking pressure began to open the game up, with Louie Stanton-Cockle impressively offering the most sustained attacking threat, alongside a battling Steve Harcombe. A cross field ball by Richard Webber from deep found Stanton-Cockle on the left and the former AFC Wimbledon player cut inside before playing a delightful reverse ball to free up Darrell Mothee, but the second half substitute s shot was dragged just past the far post. As the game wore on, 16 year old Haris Bouzida on his first senior start became more influential, and came close to providing a way back for the Chicks - a looped cross from the dead ball line left the Staines keeper stranded, but Harcombe s six-yard header was blocked on the line. With just minutes to go Dorking went for broke, sending defenders to the forward line, but leaving vulnerabilities at the back. And so it was that Aaron Fraser stole the ball on the left and broke to unleash a fierce strike for Staines Lammas third goal on 86 minutes, sealing an entertaining game in which the Chicks, despite the result, played their full part. After tonight s meeting with South Park, Dorking play their last home league game of the season this coming Saturday 18th March, when Farleigh Rovers will be the visitors to Westhumble, kicking off at 3pm. 21 APRIL IN PARIS Next month, our experienced central defender Paul Gough will run the Paris Marathon to raise money for Dementia UK. You can read about his love of running in the player profile earlier in this programme. But here, Goughy explains why he s fundraising for Dementia UK and asks for your support with donations online. My Nan is a long term sufferer of Dementia and I have seen first hand the effects the illness has - not only on those diagnosed with the illness, but also on their family and friends. My Grandfather and Mother were the main source of care for my Nan, but carers also visited their home regularly, providing much needed support and social interaction for both grandparents. The level of commitment and dedication required by family members and support staff is exceptional, and without the care provided by organisations such as Dementia UK, my Nan would not have been able to stay at home as long as she did. My Grandfather did his upmost to keep her at home with him where she belonged, although her needs eventually became too overwhelming and she was moved into a permanent care home. He continued to visit my Nan in her new home every day and found great pride and pleasure knowing that he had cared for her the best way he could and had placed her in a home where she was receiving high quality. Unfortunately, in May 2015, my Grandfather passed away following a stroke. He spent his last months ensuring that my Nan was safe, settled and well at her new home and then peacefully left us. Ultimately, the illness had as big an affect on him as it did my Nan. However he found peace knowing that she was in good care and being well looked after - something that Dementia UK strives to provide and support. I ve had first hand experience watching how this awful illness can remove someone s independence and place immense strain not just on those diagnosed, but also on their loved ones. Mine won t be the only story like this, but if you could spare any donations for a worthy charity it would be hugely appreciated. Please do support Paul as he runs in Paris in April. You can donate via his Just Giving page: Gough6 21

28 THE HISTORY OF DORKING FC Football has been played in Dorking since the 1830s. The first matches took place in the street. An annual game was staged every Shrove Tuesday in the High Street, preceded by a procession led by a band as well as men dressed as women collecting donations and carrying a cross. On the left of the cross was a red, white and blue football, on the top a gold ball and on the right a red and green football representing the cockerel colours of Dorking FC - the same colours we wear proudly today. The Shrove Tuesday game tradition continued until 1905 when it became outlawed - although the club is now looking at ways to reintroduce the historic community event. Dorking Football Club was founded in 1880, shortly after the FA had defined formal rules for the game, and now lays claim to the title of the oldest senior club in Surrey. The cockerel logo was also immediately adopted as the club s badge. It still remains there today and is why we are affectionately known as The Chicks. The club first played at a pitch on West Bank before moving to Fairfield Drive and then on to Pixham Lane in the 1920s. In 1953 we moved to our current home location at Meadowbank - an iconic, picturesque location just behind the High Street, where the bells of St Martin s can be heard peeling during the games. The new stadium was the pride of the town with a capacity of 5000, including a 28 stand accommodating 700, opened by the then FA Secretary Sir Stanley Rous. In 1974 we joined forces with Guildford City to become Guildford & Dorking United FC for an illfated three year period, before being reconstituted as Dorking Town FC, and then reverting to the traditional named of Dorking FC in On the pitch, our record over the years reflects the traditional highs and lows of non-league football, including many notable achievements as well as the occasional despair. In 1955 we became the first Surrey club to defeat a professional team when we beat Folkestone 3-1 in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup in front of a record crowd of over 4000 spectators. The late 1980s and early 90s are considered to be our glory years with cup victories and a league title, along with a promotion in 1989 followed by another promotion in 1993 to the Premier Division of the Isthmian League. In we won the Southern Counties Combination Cup and reached the first round proper of the FA Cup, losing a thrilling game 3-2 at home to Peter Shilton s Plymouth Argyle in front of TV cameras and a bumper crowd, many of whom still talk about it today while continuing to support the Chicks with a passion. We continued to play at Meadowbank until 2013 when the ground was closed by the local authority DFC Squad

29 on health and safety grounds. A lack of investment and years of decay came home to roost and the club, now playing in the Combined Counties League Division One, was forced to leave the town and ground share in Horley. for the ground at Meadowbank to be re-developed and Dorking FC have returned to playing in the town this year - initially at Westhumble Playing Fields before finally bringing football home to the new Meadowbank for the season. The new ground will feature the latest 3G artificial playing surface and, as well as having a new clubhouse, the site will also house the new headquarters of Surrey FA. Dorking will once again be very much at the centre of football activities in Surrey. DFC Squad DFC Squad The future was uncertain for the Chicks but, in early 2014, a new Board of local enthusiasts took over control and set out on an ambitious plan to rebuild the club as a community and social enterprise that would re-establish itself in the town, developing local talent. An agreement was made with Mole Valley Council 29

30 OPPOSITION HISTORY SOUTH PARK FC RESERVES South Park Football Club was formed in 1897 and immediately became founder members of the Redhill & District Football League along with other local clubs Godstone, Meadvale and Reigate Priory Reserves. The club remain members of the league today. Although the facilities were basic the early matches were played in the original sports field which was in upper South Park between Crescent Road and Church Road. In 1925 under the direction of Canon Gregory from the local church, the football club together with the village cricket club formed the South Park Sports Association with the aim of the Association to provide sport and sporting facilities for the people of South Park. Within a few years it was realised that this new concept would be better served by an improvement in facilities and playing conditions. Fortunately for both club s suitable land existed in Whitehall Lane, the clubs current home and with the co-operation of the public spirited landowner, Harold Swannack, four acres of ground were purchased there. Always strapped for cash in these early years, the money was raised for the field largely by public subscription, which included door to door collections. In order to preserve the land as a permanent sports ground, great foresight was exercised in vesting the land and subsequent purchases of further lots of two acres and four acres making ten acres in all in the National Playing Fields Association, now known as Fields in trust. The land became known as the King Georges Field from The changing rooms were located on the far side of the field from Whitehall Lane at the bottom of the number two football pitch. Although the facilities were an improvement on their previous home they remained basic. The football club flourished in the years leading to the Second Great War but obviously declined during and immediately after it. A handful of stewards rallied to the cause however and quickly resurrected its fortunes. One legacy of the hostilities, the air raid shelter, became the focus of attention when it became clear that further improvements were needed to the facilities if sporting aspirations were to be advanced. Thus it was that a shower room and toilet block and a modest clubhouse were attached to this building. Funding for this was achieved through the tireless efforts of the Friends of South Park Sports Association organisation. Despite these commendable efforts, the Association lived for many years on a hand to mouth basis with the management all too frequently having to put their hands into their own pockets to ensure its survival. During this period the playing side of the football club flourished with numerous honours won in the local leagues and cups together with appearances in County Cup finals. The club were also honoured in the fact that a number of players progressed to senior football with clubs such as Redhill and Eastbourne Town in the fifties and sixties, the heyday of non league football. The seventies and eighties brought further improvements to the changing facilities and clubroom and the purchase of the land that is now our main pitch were made. In the early seventies the football club started the junior s section. Over the years the number of teams has increased on a regular basis and today we have boy s teams from under eight s through to under sixteen s. In 1997 the football club celebrated its Centenary year, the highlight of which was a celebratory dinner held at Reigate Manor Hotel at which over 150 people attended. Many players both past and present attended along with guests from The Football Association and Surrey County Football Association. The club was presented with its own unique framed certificate from the Football Association to mark this occasion. 30 The club was once again celebrating in 1998 when Geof Thatcher was awarded a Gold Medal by the Football Association to commemorate over 50 years service to football, the whole period with our club dating back to the war years when the club only played friendly matches as their was no competitive football during the war saw Reigate Town Football Club move to South Park and the club became known as South Park & Reigate Town Football Club. In 2002 the club saw the formation of the first girl s team to play under the clubs name and we now have four girl s teams. The following the year saw the introduction of the youth team who are currently playing in the Southern Youth Floodlight League. The youth team played their home matches at Merstham Football Club from as at the time we did not have floodlights. For the 2003/04 season the club reverted back to its original name of South Park Football Club. In February 2004 the club became only the fifth in Surrey to be awarded the status of FA Charter Standard Community Club. In 2006 the first team were promoted to the Combined Counties Football League and as our new changing facilities were being built played their home matches at Cranleigh. In their first season in the Combined Counties League the team finished in seventh place in the league saw the completion of our new changing rooms and the erection of floodlights around our main pitch. This ensured that our first and youth teams could now play their home matches in South Park. The 2008/09 season saw another landmark in the history of the club when we hosted Shoreham in our first ever FA Vase game. The 2009/10 season saw the club finish in their highest position (6th) since joining the Combined Counties League. The club has continued to progress and in August 2010 our stand will be erected which will give us the ground grading required for the first team to gain promotion. The 2010/11 season will saw the club participate in the FA Cup for the time with an away tie against Greenwich Borough in the extra preliminary round. This game was covered by ITV Sport to start their Road to Wembley coverage as were our subsequent ties against Horsham YMCA and Cray Wanderers. The first team won the Surrey Premier Cup Final and the Lemon Recordings Division One Challenge Cup in addition to being promoted to the Premier Division of the Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League. The 2011/12 saw South Park finish in eighth position in their first season in the Combined Counties League Premier Division. A good run in the FA Carlsberg Vase saw us reach the Fourth Round where we were beaten by Whitley Bay, the Vase winners for the previous three seasons. Playing in the Surrey Senior Cup for the first time Park beat Ryman Premier League Kingstonian and Leatherhead before finally being knocked out in the quarter finals by Conference South Sutton Utd. Season 2012/13 saw the club reach the 4th Qualifying Round of the FA Cup with Budweiser where we played Metropolitan Police in front of a club record attendance of 643. The team finished the season in 4th place in the league and reached the league cup final. The 2013/14 season saw South Park win the Combined Counties League Premier Division and in doing so gain promotion to the Ryman League Division One South. Our first season at step four saw us finish in a creditable 14th position. Last season saw an 11th place finish.. Our reserve team are in their second season at Step 6 in the Combined Counties League Division One. It must also be noted that without the tireless efforts of the late Fred Dearmun, Geof Thatcher, Ray Wilson and Geof Arnold to name but a few, the club would not be in the position it is today.
