Rotherham United Community Sports Trust (RUCST) scoop top regional award from the English Football League.
different communities, especially Muslim women who have low participation in sport. Given the increase in Far Right marches in Rotherham and a rise in Islamophobia we found some Muslim women feel ostracised, we at RUCST have created safe spaces for Muslim women to take part health and sport activities. RUCST have been named the North East and Yorkshire Community Club of the Year for a second year in a row. Having won the award in 2016, the Trust again blew the judges away to pick up this prestigious award for a second year running, and in turn have been nominated for the National Community Club of the Year Award alongside 5 other English Football League Clubs. The shortlists for the awards were announced by the English Football League today, with the Regional Winners invited to attend a formal ceremony in London on Monday 6th March at the Houses of Parliament. The regional winners will then be invited back to the National Football League Awards on Sunday 9th April celebrating the on and off pitch excellence across the League s 72 clubs. Jamie Noble, Head of Community said We are absolutely thrilled to have won the regional Community Club of the Year award and to be in the mix for the national award against five strong opponents. We have also created a fantastic partnership with local Mosques, which has been something the trust has been working towards over the past few years and we are proud to say we have been made to feel incredibly welcome in what is a fantastic space for the local community We have also been commended for our work in a host of other areas including education, sports participation and inclusion. The staff have worked tirelessly in the past year and this nomination is testament to the hard work and commitment of a number of individuals. The Trust scooped the national award in 2012, and the regional award in 2016 (North East & Yorkshire) with a hope to claim the national award for a second time. It has been another successful year for the Trust, upon receiving the news the whole office has been overjoyed. This year has been monumental for RUCST, moving to a brand new state of the art facility, purpose built at the AESSEAL New York Stadium catering for a large office space for our staff, an activity suite and three classrooms A big factor behind our nomination is due to the work we are delivering to local communities, especially from different ethnic backgrounds through our Sport England funded project, the first year of the project (Getting back in to Sport) has been very successful and we have engaged various
up close will have been an unforgettable experience for them. Rotherham United today opened the doors to the club training ground at Parkgate for the Community Sports Trust s half-term Future Stars Holiday Camp For the kids to then attend the reserve game in the afternoon was an added bonus, so overall it was a fantastic day out. Rotherham United club captain Lee Frecklingrton added: It was great to see the club and community come together, and it was fantastic to see such a good turnout for the Trust s Holiday Camp. The Trust s coaches put on sessions for around 100 local youngsters who also got a glimpse behind the scenes as they watched the first-team being put through their paces by interim manager Paul Warne and assistant Matthew Hamshaw. After training the first-team squad and staff stopped for photographs and autographs with the youngsters, before the day was rounded off by watching the Millers Reserves take on Hartlepool United. Rotherham United s head of community Jamie Noble was delighted to give members of the Trust s Holiday Camp a look inside their club, heralding the day as a major success. As players we are regular visitors to the camps to hand out certificates and trophies to the kids, so we know first-hand just how much they enjoy spending the half-term holidays honing their football skills with the Trust. The squad were more than happy to give something back to the supporters by signing autographs and having pictures taken. We hope that all the kids enjoyed their day. Firstly I would like to thank Paul Warne and his staff for allowing the Trust to have full access to the training pitches here at Roundwood, Jamie told The half-term Holiday Camps are always well attended so when the kids were given the news that for a special treat we would be coaching them alongside the first-team, they were obviously very excited about the day ahead. To see around 100 youngsters attending was fantastic, and the chance to see their heroes Kinder+ Sport EFL Kids Cup, sponsored by B&B vehicles, is a success!! Through January, RUCST hosted their annual local round of the Kinder+ Sport EFL Kids Cup, which this year was split over two venues,
Kiveton Community Sport Park & Sheffield Hallam University Sport Park. 18 schools from across the borough took part over the 2 venues, the first local tournament took part at Kiveton where Wales Primary School & Anston Park Junior School battled their way to a final, which Anston won 3-2 to progress to the local grand final. Then came the north leg of the competition at SHU Sports Park, where the competition was tight and there were a few contenders competing for the chance to take on Anston Park. The local north round came down to St. Mary s Catholic Primary School, of Herringthorpe & Thornhill Primary School, which was a tightly contested affair, but eventually one goal settled it, and the goal came from St. Mary s. This set up the Local Grand Final at Parkgate Astro, St. Mary s vs Anston Park, for a chance to represent Rotherham United at the regional finals of the national competition. Despite St. Mary s creating many chances, Anston Park ran out 5-1 winners, and will take the next step towards Wembley, where they will have to get past the representatives of Newcastle United, Barnsley, Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United & Leeds United to name a few. We would like to thank every school for taking part in the competition, and we would also like to thank the players for the impeccable manner in which they represented their respective schools. Rotherham Young Inspectors are a group of volunteers aged between 13 and 24 years old who are placed at the heart of inspecting services delivered to children, young people and their families. Ensuring the views and experiences of young people are actively listened to and acted upon to make a difference is important to the outcomes of the young inspectors programme. What do we do? Carry out inspections during the school holidays to check services are doing what they should be doing. Example activities include: Acting as a customer (secret shopper) by asking for information in person, over the phone, or on the website. Carrying out surveys with people who have used services to gain their views. Watching services in action and checking the standards of service. Checking that buildings and surroundings are fit for purpose, looking at things like easy access, information, friendliness, ease of use. Provide feedback and ask services for action plans. Meet on a regular basis to carry out team building activities and other tasks. Carry out fundraising activities such as bake sales and raffles for local charities. What are we currently working on? Our inspection plan for 2017 includes Youth Centres, Young Carers, Fostering, Mental Health Services, Children s Ward, School Meals and much more. 21 inspections have been carried out since May 2015 with over 63 improvements made. Who can join? Anyone between 13 and 24 years old who lives, or attends school in Rotherham. What will you get out of it? Young Inspector Training and Certificate. Volunteer Accreditation (optional). Fun rewarding activities three times a year (chosen by young people). Meet new friends and learn new skills. Improved confidence and self-esteem. Make a positive difference to other young people in Rotherham.
To find out more contact our Young Inspector Co-Ordinator Ashlea Harvey: Text/Phone: & Saturday s one-all draw between Rotherham United and Blackburn Rovers played host to the official EFLT NCS Match Day Take-Over fixture. NCS (National Citizen Service) is a youth development programme for year olds. NCS also took over the Goal Zone, providing pre-match activities to young people of the age for NCS. This included a reaction wall competition, FIFA 17 on the Xbox as well as table tennis. The entertainment didn t stop there as dance crew Limited Edition, headed up by RUCST s very own Anthony Bayou (NCS Project Assistant), performed live to NCS Ambassador Jess Glynne s track No Rights, No Wrongs. Although 0-0 at half time, five lucky Miller s fans already had something to cheer about having found a GOLD STAR underneath their seat, providing them with a free place on NCS with RUCST this summer! The programme itself helps young people develop skills for work and life by getting them involved in residential and community based activities. Such activities provide young people with the experience necessary to boost their CV s, confidence and job applications whist also encouraging them to take responsibility for their own actions and development. For more information about NCS, please contact ncs@rotherhamunited.net or call between the hours of 9am- 4:30pm. NCS it all starts at YES. At Saturday s fixture, RUCST s NCS team were out in force, sporting their bright NCS hoodies and creating a buzz about the game before kick-off. A team of NCS staff and Graduates (previous NCS participants) were stationed outside the front of the stadium, promoting the programme by talking to people, handing out fliers and generally making noise about NCS! Players also posed with the official #NCS photo frame and alongside Miller Bear, they donned the NCS it all starts at YES Take- Over T-Shirt pre-game!
