1 Page1 VESS Games JUNE 20 th JUNE 22 nd 2014 Camp Greenough,Yarmouthport MA. Ventue Exploring SeaScouts Leaders Guide and Registration Packet Are you ready for the ANNUAL VESS Games? This is your Invitation to attend an action packed weekend filled with fun and excitement. We will have challenging events for crew, post & ship members of all interest and skill levels. All of the weekend events are designed for units show teamwork as well as team spirit. We will start off on Friday night with the VESS Games opening ceremonies. There will be a unit call out to see how much spirit your unit can show. After the opening ceremonies the Crew Advisors, Skippers and Post Advisors will meet to discuss the next day s competition, activities and events. After the brief meeting the units will compete in the first two competitions of the weekend, the Text Message Challenge and You Don t Know Jack. The following morning you will be asked to bring your flag down to our opening flag ceremonies. Your unit will raise their flag and give any last announcements, and then the games will begin. We have planned this event for your unit to enjoy. Many of the activities and competitions are intended to build spirit and nurture teamwork. Let s all have fun.. THINK NEON

3 Page3 VESS Game Program Guide Camp Greenough is hosting the Annual V ESS Games June 20 22, Your unit will be experiencing an exciting weekend of fun competition. The VESS Games are aimed be a mix of unit vs.unit competition during the day with social events at night. During the day units will compete for the VESS Cup where they will be awarded points for different events. The point total will be posted in real time on a leader board. The crew who wins the VESS-Cup will be able to take the cup home and display it with all the bragging rights that come with it; until next VESS GAMES when you have to return it to the next Games where it will up for grabs all over again. VESS Competitions and Sports VESS Challenges Muzzle Loading Archery Adult Chili Cook off Log Splitting Shotgun Shooting 1 st aid Relay Race Two Man Saw Paddle Boat Racing You Don t Know Jack Axe Throwing Obstacle Course Treasure Hunt Rescue Rope Toss Communications ( by Morse ) And many more.. still being added or being changed Plus other new and some vintage competitions and sports Crew Advisor, Post Advisors & Skippers Challenges Chili Cook-off Shooting Sports Archery / Muzzle Loaders The morning portion of the shooting program participants will be able to qualify to be their crew champion in Muzzle Loading. After lunch your crew champion will represent your crew and compete in competition for accuracy. There will be a VESS Games Champion for each shooting sports event. Note Per the rules of the guide to safe scouting. All participants must have completed an NRA /BSA basic Muzzleloader and Shotgun course prior to range firing. This course is mandatory and takes about 30 minutes per discipline. The course will be held Friday evening 9:00 location TBA. After the cup is awarded VESS GAMES are closed and it s time to PARTY! 5 Page5 VESS Games Etiquette Parking Please follow the directions of the Camp Master Do not block the road No more than 2 vehicles allowed to park in campsites. All other vehicles once unloaded must return to the parking lots. Trailers can be stored with vehicles in and around the campsites Please be conservation minded First Aid All injuries must be reported to the camp master. Emergency procedures will be discussed at the Friday night meeting. PLEASE DO NOT CALL 911 Alcoholic Beverages, Narcotic Drugs, Personal Firearms, and Fireworks We will not tolerate the presence of alcoholic beverages, drugs, or persons obviously under the influence of the same. Violators will be asked to leave the camp. Personal firearms, archery equipment, and fireworks are not allowed at the camp at any time Valuables Please do not bring valuables to camp. Occasionally belongings are misplaced, lost or stolen. Cape Cod & Islands Council is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Fires and Firewood Camp Greenough is a beautiful camp located amidst towering pines & oaks. There are plenty of downed trees; it is recommended that your crew brings any tools you may need. (NO CHAINSAWS) The established campsites have existing fire rings. Please only have fires in existing fire rings. Fires are to be put out by 10:00PM and should never be Unattended. Check with the Camp master prior to lighting fires. Garbage ( Dumpster next to Dinning Hall ) Leave No Trace training comes in handy Please leave your campsite or cabin cleaner than you found it Please police your site before checking out. Registration and Check in: All units must register with the camp master upon arrival at Camp Greenough. Check in will take place in Maushop Lodge to the right of the parking lot from 6:00 to 8:00 on Friday. Upon checking in you must show your tour permit, and your medical forms. You must also turn in a roster showing all the names of youth and adults. This is critical if there is an emergency we need to know where you are camping. Your patrol names must be registered and you must keep the same name all through the event. After check in you will be directions to your camp site or building. Check Out Procedure at camp Check out will take place on Sunday morning. After your site is picked up and policed please send someone to the administration building. We will send a camp guide out to check out your site.

9 Page9 The Games Rules and Procedures for VESS Games Events Muzzleloader Shooting, Shotgun Shooting, Archery Morning Session is open to all who want to compete to be their Unit s Champion Scores will be recorded throughout the morning The unit member with the highest score in each of these events will be invited back to the appropriate range in the afternoon to compete against all the other unit as their units champion and compete for individual awards If time allows after the competition the range will be open to ALL who would like to shoot Two Person Cross cut Saw and log splitting. Record your best time during the day Each pair will attempt to cut 1x16 log then split it into 4 pieces Points awarded for pair with best time Tomahawk toss Best Tomahawk thrower will be invited to return to represent their unit in a winner take all event 1 st Aid Relay Race (Wilderness 1 st Aid) This year there is something special planned for the relay race. Points awarded top finisher Communication (By Morse) The objective of the station will be a message will be sent from a distance by morse code visible or by sound with a message and the first team with the message or most of the message to be brought back at the fastest time will be the winners. The message will be sent at 5 words per minute. Teams should study the morse code for the event. There will be a code interpretation sheet at the station as well. Darts. Each person in the unit throws, lowest amount of darts thrown to score 1001 Treasure Hunt This is an individual event. You will have to find 5 different locations. You can use different ways to locate the 5 locations. Map & Compass or GPS (both supplied) Note this event scores 50 points towards the VESS cup for your unit
10 Page10 Fishing Derby. 3 cast from different distances. Closest wins Waterfront Relay. Fun on the water Chili Cook-off (Adult Challenge) Enter the Second Annual VESS Games Chili Cook Off. This will give the old timers something to brag about over the next year. This is a no holds barred chili cook off, please mark your concoctions: One, Two, or Three Alarm or Napalm HOT Bragging rights awarded to the top three finishes All entries must be submitted to the Dining Hall before time expires for consideration Decisions by the judges in final and cannot be disputed NOTE: Events are subject to change / cancelation / substitution without prior notification DO YOU HAVE A NEW AND EXCITING SPORT OR EVENT YOU WOULD LIKE TO HOST AT THE NEXT VESS GAMES? If so please contact one of our Event Coordinators to discuss your idea. New sports and activities must meet the Guide to Safe Scouting regulations and must be approved by the event coordinators to ensure these guidelines will be met.
11 Page11 ATTENTION TROOPS Are your senior scouts 14 years old and older 1 st Class or above looking for something new and different in your scouting career? Come join us for fun a full day of fun and games at the Annual VESS Games! We are opening up the Saturday activities to senior scouts with 1st Class or above rank and have turned 14 yrs by 6/1/2014 who would like to experience a day of fun as an honorary Venture Crew or Sea Scout Ship. All you need to do is pack a lunch and make your way to Camp Greenough on Saturday June 21, There is no cost for Senior Scouts to participate in the Saturday s activities. This includes all sports, skills, award ceremony and participation in our evening festivities. Venturing is a co-ed program; it is ok to invite daughters, sisters, friends and cousins as long as they are 14 to 20 years old. NOTES:
12 Page12 Cross Cut Saw & Log Splitting (Points towards VESS Trophy) A two person team from each unit will cut 1 x 16 log with a cross cut saw then using a wedge and maul split the 16 log into 4 pieces This is a timed event. Quickest pair will win the points for their unit Muzzle loading. Open shoot in the morning. Best marksman from each unit will be invited back to represent their respective unit. Best shot wins all the pints towards the VESS cup Waterfront Relay (Points towards Vess Trophy) This event is still a surprise. One thing I know is that you will get wet. Rowing, Paddling Canoeing will all be part of this relay Best team will win all the points towards the VESS Cup
13 Page13 Venturing and Sea Scout First-Aid station (Points Towards VESS Trophy) The station will test the Scouts First-aid knowledge and ability to assess a situation and overcome the obstacles. The event will be score and timed. The situation will be while on their ship. The ship announces General Quarters. General Quarter all hands man their stations. Then a few minutes later the collision alarm sounds. The crew is at their station when they feel the collision and start hearing other members yelling help help. As the crew makes their way down the passage way they come upon pipes across the passage way. They will have to squeeze between the pipes to reach the other members. When they reach the other members they see one member down. The crew must rescue the member and administer first-aid and transport the member to safety. The injured member will be un-responsive with an injury to head. The compartment is filling with water and will start to flow into the other compartments and flooding them. Scoring Max score 20 point plus time Did the members do a full body assessment prior to moving the victim - 10 points (Check Head, shoulder, sides, hip, legs) 2 point for each area checked. Injuries are non-life threatening. Treat head injury - 10 points using the proper head dressing. Transport victim to a safe area. Stretcher 10 points Time the event from the start of the collision alarm Best team overall will be awarded the points towards the VESS Trophy

In case of a tie there will be a cast off. Most accurate will win all the points for their unit towards the VESS cup.
16 Page16 Darts (Points towards Vess Trophy) Each member of the unit will throw 1 dart at a time (Maximum 3 darts per round) at a dart board at a distance of 8 feet, The score obtained by each dart will be deducted from Darts that fall out of the board or do not reach the board count as a dart thrown these darts will not score. Unit that throws the least amount of darts to score 1001 win the challenge and will be awarded 20 points towards the Vess trophy.
17 Page17 Treasure Hunt (Points towards Vess Trophy) This event starts at (9:00 on Friday night If you have a BSA shooting course ID) The Treasure hunt will begin after Shooting sports lecture and ends at 4:30 on Saturday. Only 8 people at a time will be allowed on the course so sign up and get your start time. This is an individual event You will be given the opportunity to find 5 secret locations using either Map & Compass or GPS (Both Supplied) Find the location and you will receive more clues and a piece of a jigsaw. Bring the 5 jigsaw pieces back to the start and receive more instructions. EARN YOUR UNIT 50 points towards the VESS Cup. This event earns more points than any other, so take part and help win the cup for your unit. Leader information.
