DIVISIONAL WORK--Kansas City s month of June has been dominated with play against A.L. West opponents, with tonight the 15th straight game vs. the West when playing an American League club (the Royals were 0-2 vs. Cincy to open this homestand)...kc still has this series, a weekend stop in Houston and make-up game here next Monday vs. the Angels at 3:15 p.m. (April 15 snowout) that will cap 20 straight intra-league games vs. the West, with the Royals 2-12 in June and just 5-19 on the year...kansas City is within the AL Central, including an 8-4 record in its last 12 intradivision contests...the Royals have gone just 3-12 vs. the East...KC s work against the National League is 2-5, with the NL Central the focus this season. WHERE S WHIT???--Kansas City utility man extraordinaire Whit Merrifield served as the designated hitter last night, just a day after departing in the second inning after fouling a ball off his left knee...in his third big league season, Merrifield s name is likely to be somewhere near the top of the batting order when healthy, but where he ll play on a given day could be virtually anywhere on the diamond...since June 1 alone, he has started at second base (6 games), in center field (4 times), at first base (twice), right field (twice) and as the DH (twice)...on the year, he s played four different defensive positions, including his normal location of second base (46 games), center field (8 games), first base (5 games) and right field (6 games)...he has played left field and third base in previous seasons, while also DH ing five times this year. DUPER HITS SNAG WITH NYC--Kansas City replay review guru, Bill Duplissea had the Royals challenge Mike Moustakas head first slide into home plate in the third inning on Sunday and the folks in New York decided to stick with the call on the field due to lack of convincing evidence, thus causing Dupe to fall to 17-for-21 on the year...despite the stands call, his 81% success rate is way ahead of any other big league club based on the numbers from MLB, with the Yankees next at 72.7% (16-for-22)...Dupe has made good on 67% of his challenges in his career (116-for-172), which ranks among the best, including a Major League best 71.9% success rate over the last three seasons (69-for-96). KC S TOP SKIPPER--The winningest manager in franchise history, Ned Yost recorded his 1,100th career win on May 18 vs. the Yankees and has since upped that career total to 1,108, which is good for seventh on the all-time list among active skippers, while Detroit s Ron Gardenhire in next in the eighth spot with 1,104 career wins...ned has a regular season record at the helm for the Royals, blowing past Whitey Herzog s previous team mark of 410 wins ( )...Yost is the 16th full-time manager in franchise history and is sixth among active managers in games (2,292)...his postseason winning pct. of.710 (22-9) is tops among all managers in history who have worked at least 20 playoff games...this is his second stint as a big league manager after nearly six full campaigns at the helm for the Milwaukee Brewers ( )...he compiled a record with the Brew Crew including a mark in his last two seasons...yost, a catcher during his playing days, began his coaching career in the Atlanta organization, including 12 straight seasons on Bobby Cox s big league staff ( ). vs. Rangers (2018) vs. Rangers (career) At Home (career) Hamels (career) Méndez (career) Player AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI Almonte Butera Dozier Escobar Goins Gordon Herrera Merrifield Mondesi Moustakas Orlando Perez Starting Pitchers Breakdown Total KC Avg.
