2 HAPPY JULY!!! Why is it that the summer always seems to get away from us? Before we know it we will be doing back to school shopping. Before we get there, we still have plenty of fun stuff ahead of us for 4-H. Please make sure you are reading the newsletter in its entirety. There is a lot of information in here, and we want to make sure you all know what is going on. This month s letter is short, because, well: I can t wait to see all of the fun projects you have all be working on over the year. Achievement days is a busy time, but it is also one of my favorites with all the cool stuff the kids have been making. See you at the Fair!

3 CLUB CORNER Information, Recognition, and Opportunities for your Club! Thank you Dynamite Kids for planting two large planters to help make our 4-H Building summer ready! Thank you to Dusty and Marv Abraham for transplanting the Japanese Tree Lilac in front of the 4-H building. We are gauging interest in a possible part time position in our office! It would be hours a week with the main job duty of running the afterschool 4-H programs (currently at 5 school with the possibility of expanding to more). Historically this has been from 4-5pm with each school meeting every other week. If you are interested in learning more about the position please contact Amelia. Once the position is posted we will share the application process. Thank you Taylor Morrison for hanging a board up in the 4-H Lab & best of luck this coming football season at UMary! As we start getting ready for packing to send the projects to the State Fair, we are going to need boxes! They can be brought into the office the week of Achievement Days! Achievement Day REMINDER: Every Club must bring TWO DOZEN GOODIES for the cake walk!! ATTENTION: If you are going to the ND State Fair, stop by the Extension Office and pickup your 4-H Membership Card!!!

5 Healthy North Dakota 4-H Club Hey 4-H clubs and members, This is Alice, your FCW agent with information relating to your Healthy Club Award. The recipe I have included this month is excellent for a group or a snack in your own kitchen. These were used in the Cooking Camps this summer. The Fruit Salsa is so easy only needs some cutting of the fruits you choose to include with some tantalizing flavor additions. The Cinnamon Crisps work well with the salsa or as a snack on their own. You will be surprised by how easy both of these recipes are. Happy and healthy snacking as you enter the month of July!!! I will be anxious to meet you at Achievement Days.

6 Healthy North Dakota 4-H Club Fruit Salsa with Cinnamon Chips Enjoy the colors and flavors of the summer season with this tasty dessert or snack from NDSU Extension. Fruit Salsa Ingredients 1 c. diced strawberries 1 diced banana 1 peeled and diced kiwi 1 cored and diced apple 1/4 c. sugar 2 Tbsp. lemon juice (bottled or fresh-squeezed) 1/4 tsp. nutmeg 1/4 tsp. cinnamon Directions Wash fruits well with water and cut into small pieces. Combine in a medium mixing bowl. Add lemon juice, sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon. Mix well. Refrigerate until serving time. Serve with cinnamon chips or baked tortilla chips. NOTE: Frozen, unsweetened strawberries can be substituted for fresh. Substitute your other favorite fruits if desired. Makes four servings. Per serving: 120 calories, 0.5 gram (g) fat, 31 g carbohydrate and 3 g dietary fiber. Cinnamon Chips Ingredients 4 flour tortillas (flour or whole wheat) 2 tsp. sugar 1/4 tsp. cinnamon Directions Preheat oven to 350 F. Mix sugar and cinnamon in small dish or place in an empty salt shaker. Spray each side of tortilla with butter-flavored cooking spray. Sprinkle one side with sugar mixture.. Cut tortillas into wedges and place in a single layer on large baking sheets. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool 15 minutes. Makes 4 servings; Per serving: 150 calories, 3.5 g fat, 25 g carbohydrates, 0 g protein, 1 g fiber and 290 mg sodium

Kiddie Calf Show: Saturday, July pm KMOT Pride of Dakota Day: Monday, July 23: 11 am 5pm Kids 12 and under No experience needed! USDA offering $1 hotdogs 11am 1 pm proceeds going to ND FFA Kids Tractor Pedal Pull: Tuesday, July 24, 2-4 pm Miniature tractors are weighted and pedaled to victory in front of the KX Info Center. Registration begins at 1:30 out front of the KX Info Center and the Pedal Pull begins at 2:00 PM. Essay Contest: My Favorite Memory with my Grandparent(s): *4th &5th graders from ND *150 words or less about {1st place: wins a family trip to Medora 2nd place: family day at the Roosevelt Park Zoo in Minot 3rd place: captains day pass to Raging Rivers in Mandan} *Winners will read their essays at the Senior Day Festival on Thursday the 26th Water Day Festival O Fun Thursday, July 26, 11-4 pm WATER, trivia, prize drawing, AND Forest Fest snow cones.

12 National 4-H Leadership Opportunities The NDSU Center for 4-H Youth Development invites you (ages 15-18) to attend National 4-H Congress and National 4-H Conference. 4-H Conference: April 2019 (TBD), Washington, D.C. Purpose: Involve youth with program development, strengthen, and continue development of 4-H public relations programs. 4-H Congress: November 2018, Atlanta, GA Purpose: To recognize and promote excellence in the 4-H youth development education program For more information: Visit us online, Brochure, Application If you have any questions or are in need of any further information, please contact Rachelle Vettern. 13 Tri County Fair July 12-15, 2018 Open Horse Show Friday July 13, 2018 Entries are from 8:00a.m. - 8:30 a.m. Judging starts at 9:00 a.m. It is highly recommended that you pre-register so the show can begin on time (classes can be scratched the day of the show if needed).
