That s Sierra, boasts Coach Gant. Fox Tech is so proud of Sierra Gonzales who competed at the State 3-A Cross Country Meeting this morning in Round Rock, Texas. Despite the wind, rain, and mud - Sierra finished the challenging event placing 80 out of 151 competitors. Coach Gant said, While athletes are out there complaining about the weather, Sierra is running in the rain! What s Sierra s secret? When you are not practicing someone else is getting better, shares Sierra. Way to Go - Sierra - You are a symbol of Buffalo Pride...We at Fox Tech salute you! Pride of Downtown! 2 Water Buffaloes: Make Quite A Splash (Lauren Reyna, ) Our Fox Tech Swim Team secured a second-place team tie with Cole High School at the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Region IV Swim Meet on Thursday, October 29th. The team's highlight performance came from Isaiah Salazar who placed 1st place in the 100 Free-Style out of a field of 22 competitors. All boys and girls did a great job in contributing toward the final point count. Our swimmers are determined and dedicated, showing up for everyday at 6:30 a.m for swim practice at the natatorium. Competitive swimmers must develop both a mental and physical endurance. Coach Cuccia looks forward toward another great season. Barring injuries and illness, both the boys and girls swim teams should qualify several athletes to the regional completion to be held in Corpus in February. The 5th Wave November 16, 2015 (Kendra Turpin, Literary Critic) After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one. The Fifth Wave by Rick Yancey With a teaser like that who wouldn t want to read this book? The Fifth Wave is an imaginative new novel series, soon to be a released Hollywood film. Yancey has the talent to transform the printed word into vivid illustrations in a readers mind. There are so many exciting twists and turns, it became so hard to put this book down. The main character of the book is Cassie. Survivors are hiding from Them they look human. These beings travel the planet hunting down all remaining survivors. Cassie trusts no one until she meets a young man named Evan Walker. Should Cassie trust him? Survival is in the balance. The characters become so real that you become connected to the story. This is a fantastic suspense novel. 2

3 Powder Puff Football Game November 6, 2015 (Athena McCloud, ) You could feel the energy flowing from the crowd. As a matter of fact, the fun antics of the hairy-legged male cheerleaders on the sideline received an equal amount of applause and laughter. These male cheerleaders kept the crowd in hysterics as they attempted their best cheering moves. On the field, it was evident that both teams of Junior and Senior class ladies were serious about their football. Everyone was treated to a fun-spirited game. In the end, the Juniors reigned supreme. The game ended with both teams serving up high fives to each other. The Powder Puff football game is a tradition handed down from our Chili Bowl past. No doubt, our alumni would be proud that these current Buffaloes carry on this fun tradition. WNBA San Antonio All-Star Sophia Young- Malcolm stopped by to watch the Fox Tech vs. YWLA basketball Game J.V. basketball player Austin Martinez got a big surprise at last Tuesdays first home game of the season. Sitting in the stands was one of her most favorite WNBA players Sophia Young-Malcolm. I couldn t believe she was here at Fox Tech, says Austin. "I never imagined that I would be talking about my basketball play with one of my favorite players of all-time." 3

4 UIL Congress Team Brings Home the Bling! November 13, 2015 (Dolores Torres, ) UIL Student Congress team wins their Region 20 district competition last Friday in Poth, Texas. UIL Student Congress simulates the democratic legislative debate process of the U.S. legislature. Part of the debate process includes the submission of mock legislation generated from students. Fox Tech submitted legislation regarding the use of body cameras by law enforcement. Tech's legislation was selected to be argued at the state competition. Jasmine Taylor placed 1st & Andrew Kamali placed 3rd, both will be advancing to the state championship at the Texas State Capital on January 11-13, Andrew Kamali said, My experience at the UIL Congress competition was honestly very exhilarating and exciting. Other members participating: Roland Mata, Sharon Garcia, Isaai Ortega, and Thalia Romo. Congratulations to Ms. Casanova and her amazing students. Ms. Casanova shared, I am extremely proud of my team s maturity, talent and preparation. 4

5 The Homecoming Dance was a Hit! November 6 (Austin Martinez, ) The Fox Tech Homecoming Dance of 2015 had the campus rocking with fun. The class sponsors and students did an amazing job creating an atmosphere of "Moroccan Nights." The pair of D.J.'s kept the crowd dancing all night. Many students expressed fun and excitement. Our students dressed up impressively for the festive celebration - Buffalo Style. I was so impressed with the selection of beautiful dresses. Our girls looked terrific, shared Richard Gonzales. It appears that everyone cannot wait for the next great Fox Tech dance. April Casanova said The dance was so much fun. I didn t want the night to end. Great memories for sure! 5

6 When did Thanksgiving become a National Holiday? November 18, 2015 (Austin Martinez, ) We all know that the first Thanksgiving in our country took place between the Pilgrims and Native Americans during the early 17th century. But when did the United States acknowledge this long-standing and treasured holiday? The answer might surprise you. The answer is the American Civil War. Ms. Albro and Mr. Martinez history students do you remember the U.S. Civil War? The U.S. Civil War ( ) was a conflict between Northern and Southern states over the issue of slavery. As many as 600,000 Americans were killed in this conflict between the Northern and Southern states. During this bloody conflict, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln felt that America needed to reflect and celebrate those things in life that we each hold so precious. So in 1863, Lincoln declared the last Thursday of November as a national holiday. Later, the Thanksgiving holiday would be moved to the third Thursday of November by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Why? blame Santa Claus. The president in support of our nations retailers felt that moving the holiday would provide the American public more time to shop for the Christmas holidays. Now you know.
