1 Dear parents, caregivers, students and friends of the school. Tena koutou katoa. Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa. We are four weeks into the second term and school is a busy place. Last week we hosted the film crew for the Prime Minister s Education Excellence Awards and our students were great. A big thank you to our parents and colleagues who came along to share their perspective of our school. We now look forward to showcasing our school to the judges who will be in the school on Tuesday 3 rd June next week. The judges are: Lorraine Kerr, President of the New Zealand School Trustees Association and Distinguished Professor Viviane Robinson of the University of Auckland. This term we have also developed a new way of celebrating our students cultural and family heritage. Every student has their photo placed on our new Heritage Wall in the Learning Centre. It is important to us that every student has a sense of belonging in our school and that their family s culture and heritage is valued. We hope to organise a series of activities to celebrate our cultural diversity during our mid-year parent interview week next term. You, as parents/caregivers, along with family members are invited and most welcome to come along to see the wall for yourself. A good time would be Friday after the school cross country. You ll be able to see your son or daughter race and then wander up the ramp to our Learning Centre which is above the Literacy Centre. Our PTA meet on Tuesday 10 June at 7.30pm and we ll use the Learning Centre as our venue. Everyone is invited to join us and you ll be able to view the heritage wall as well. We ll be debriefing how grandparents day went and plan for John Parson s presentation in term 3. His focus is Cyber safety and he will be working with students, teachers and parents on 26 August next term. Regards Henk Popping PRINICPAL Proud sponsor of Otumoetai Intermediate Otumoetai Intermediate School Newsletter: Volume Page 1

2 OTUMOETAI INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL FAIR PLAY EXPECTATIONS As the winter sports season gets into full swing and we start to prepare for the NZCT AIMS GAMES national tournament we would like to make everyone aware of our school s fair-play expectations. Sporting Players Good sport is about positive attitude. Play your part play fair. To the best of your ability: Play by the rules. Never argue with an official. Work hard to do your best at all times. Turn up to practice. Be a good sport and recognize good players and good plays by all involved. Remember to thank your coach, the officials, the opposition and supporters. Help others in your team when you can. Avoid putting people down or bullying them. Give it heaps and not get ugly. Sporting Coaches Good sport is about positive attitude. As a coach you set the standards. Play your part to help make each game a success play fair. To the best of your ability: Set personal behaviour standards for yourself and those you coach to follow. Give each player the same amount of your attention and time. Provide every player with the same opportunities to play the game. Never argue with the referee, encourage cheating or make excuses for losing. Always be positive. Never shout at or ridicule players. Respect players efforts regardless of whether we have won or lost. Encourage respect for the opposition and officials. Keep winning and losing in perspective with personal challenge and enjoyment. Give it heaps and not get ugly. Otumoetai Intermediate School Newsletter: Volume Page 2

3 Sporting Spectators and Supporters Good sport is about positive attitude. You can set the right tone, and help make the game a success. Play your part play fair. To the best of your ability: Respect that people are involved in sport for fun and enjoyment. Support good play and applaud good performance from all competitors. Attempt to understand the rules of the game. Learn the difference between supportive and abusive comments and rule out the latter. Accept the decisions of officials and coaches. Display self-control on the side-line. Always be positive. Never shout at or ridicule players. Show your appreciation to people who volunteer their time to make sport happen. Remember that we are all capable of making mistakes. Give it heaps and not get ugly. SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY THIS FRIDAY 30 th MAY The school cross country is being held this Friday from 9.00am through to 10.30am. The starting order is: Year 8 boys then Year 8 girls; ten minute break; Year 7 boys then Year 7 girls. Students are advised to wear shoes and may wear house colours. A copy of the cross country map can be viewed at: KENT AND RUBEN S TECHNICAL CLASS PROJECT In Food Technology we had to plan a recipe for a healthy dish which met a set criteria. We cooked and presented it in a Master Chef-type situation. Ruben and I cooked Eel Fritters and Koura (fresh water crayfish), garnished with lemons, baby guava, fig and Kaffa lime leaves. The eels and Koura, Ruben and I caught up in a stream near my house in Ohauiti. Our fritters included a range of spices and we both thought they were delicious. We were pleased with our presentation and how our dish turned out. We have enjoyed having the opportunity to design and make our own recipes in Food Tech this cycle. 5 SMOKEFREE ROCKQUEST The Otumoetai Intermediate Rock Band, Increase5, have recently competed against local Bay of Plenty Schools in the Smokefree Rockquest heats to secure a place in the regional finals. Competing against many talented college-aged solo, duo and band acts Increase5, a five-piece singer-songwriter boy band, have done Otumoetai Intermediate proud. Being in a band is never easy, however, band members Henare Singh, Eden Exelby, Sam Evans, Caelan Potts and Jahvis Stantiall (a mixture of Year 7 and 8 students) have worked well together to write and perform a musically extension song in front of a large audience and an experienced panel of judges. Giving up their own lunch times, after schools and weekends, Increase5 have worked hard for this result. The next three weeks as they prepare for regional finals held at Baycourt on the 20 th June, are a busy time for the boys. They will be composing, writing and rehearsing two songs. Increase5 are thankful and excited for this opportunity to perform at the Smokefree Rockquest 2014 Regional finals. TAURANGA CHORAL MUSIC FESTIVAL The choir is buzzing with excitement for this years' Tauranga Choral Festival, which is based on 'A Night with the Stars', featuring the hit songs 'Counting Stars', and 'Yellow'. This festival takes place every year with primary and intermediate schools from all around Tauranga. It is a great opportunity to join with other students from around the area. With tension rising for the lone two solo spots available for our choir, the competitive singers are more than nervous for the Otumoetai Intermediate audition. The choir students practice the songs every Thursday and more spots are available for those who love singing and want to join! Otumoetai Intermediate School Newsletter: Volume Page 5
