1 FINE ARTS Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion Ensembles - These groups allow students to perform literature written for smaller ensembles. By working in small ensembles, students begin to develop independent performance skills. These groups will rehearse and perform outside of school hours. Students will work on a variety of musical styles, perform concerts in a variety of venues and work with other students. Jazz Band - The Jazz Band is designed to give students the opportunity to play in a band at school / community events. This band will rehearse on Tuesday mornings starting in the second semester. Students will work on a variety of musical styles including, but not limited, to: Swing, Pop, Jazz, BeBop and other styles appropriate to Instrumental Jazz education. The Jazz Band will perform concerts as a featured ensemble or in conjunction with other Pinckneyville bands and ensembles. Pinckneyville Chorus - Students wishing to participate in this club must audition using a solo selected by Mr. Evans. Students must be able to rehearse after school on Thursday Mornings at 7:30. This group will prepare music to be performed at Large Group Performance Evaluation. In order to remain in this group, students must learn to sight-read music, sing major, minor, and chromatic scales, and able to sing solo's in addition to performing in ensembles. Some morning rehearsal may be required. Additional information regarding academic and behavioral standing will be provided once students are selected. Philharmonic Orchestra - The Philharmonic Orchestra is the honor performance ensemble for the PMS Orchestra Program. The Philharmonic Orchestra is made up of the top students enrolled in the 7th & 8th grade orchestras. Students gain membership into the Philharmonic Orchestra through an audition process. The goal of this performance ensemble is to challenge students who are excelling in their grade level orchestra classes and want the opportunity to perform more vigorous repertoire. This group rehearses before school and performs at least three times a year. Jazz Strings - Jazz Strings is designed to give students the opportunity to play in an orchestra at school and community events. This orchestra will rehearse on Tuesday mornings starting in the second semester. Students will work on a variety of musical styles including, but not limited, to: Swing, Pop, Jazz, BeBop and other styles appropriate to Instrumental Jazz education. ACADEMIC TEAMS Future Problem Solvers - Students will solve futuristic problems using the creative problem solving method. Students will practice on specific mornings, complete practice problems and compete to attend state and international bowls. This team is affiliated with Georgia and International Problem Solving. SPONSORS Jessica Petronis Fridays: 8:15 Readers Rally is a reading quiz bowl style competition for students in grades four through twelve. Students read books from a pre-determined list and answer questions about those books. Each Gwinnett County school may send one team of ten players or less to the Readers Rally event. We will meet monthly during first semester and then weekly during second semester until the competition in March. Our meetings will consist of discussing the books and practicing for the competition. Continental Math League - Continental Math League is a national math competition. Students from all over the United States in grades 6th, 7th, and 8th participate in 5 meets where students solve six challenging math problems in only 30 minutes. The problems challenge students to stretch their minds mathematically to attack these problems in different ways. Pinckneyville Middle School offers this competition to all Accelerated math students and competitions are held on 5 Mondays throughout the year. SPORTS TEAMS Basketball (7 th & 8th grade) - Pinckneyville Middle School has girls and boys basketball teams that play other middle schools in Gwinnett County. The purpose of competitive basketball is to provide instruction in teamwork, fundamentals of basketball and sportsmanship within the framework of vigorous competition. Activities will include pre-conditioning and team tryouts in October. The regular season begins in November and ends in February with a post season tournament. Cheerleading (7th and 8th grade) - The Pinckneyville Blue Devils Cheer Squad are the cheerleaders for girls and boys basketball teams. These students are members of the seventh and eighth grade class. Tryouts are held in the spring of the school year before the Fall/Winter basketball season. The students cheer during the November-February basketball season. Intramurals - During the fall and spring, Pinckneyville has an intramural program for students in all grades. The program begins before school and lasts for one hour. Soccer Team The boys and girls soccer team is a club that travels to play other middle school teams. Tryouts will be held in September. Our season runs October thru April. Sara Sanders & Emily Rios- Hernandez Fall Intramurals August thru October. Spring Intramurals March thru May. Practices are held in the mornings. Dates. Volleyball Pinckneyville Middle School has a girls volleyball team that plays other schools in the county. The purpose of providing this opportunity is to teach teamwork, sportsmanship and the fundamentals of volleyball. CLUBS Campus Life - Focus is on development of positive character traits using fun games that develop team and social skills. Small-group time over snacks helps develop valuable friendships and real conversational skills. Student leaders will be facilitators. Garden Club - Garden Club meets weekly to grow food, herbs and flowers in the Pinckneyville Inside Courtyard. Students will learn how to grow a variety of crops, seed saving and how to have fun while gardening. Students can enjoy growing food throughout the entire school year and discover what crops grow during each season. Members of the garden club will be able to bring some of produce home to share with their families. Green Team Recycling Club - During Green Team Meetings, students recycle all paper, plastic bottles and aluminum cans in the school. Blue Devils News Crew - The Blue Devils News Crew members prepare and produce the PMS Blue Devils News for broadcast each morning to the entire school. The news features a review of events at Pinckneyville Middle school as well as announcements for the day. News crew members learn about the various roles within the studio environment, both on camera and behind the scenes, recording and editing video and creating the entire broadcast. Anime/KPOP Club The Anime Club will revolve around learning about different anime genres which will include TV & film. Once a month we will have a K-Pop day that centers around dance, music videos, and dance. Calligraphy Club Come and learn about the art of producing decorative handwriting or lettering with a pen or brush. Student Council - The goals of the student council are: To develop student leadership by providing opportunities to practice good citizenship within the school and community, to maintain a continuous flow of communication among students, faculty, administration, and community. To offer activities and community projects in which all students may participate. PMS Student Council is always busy at work. Students participate in various fundraising activities for different organizations, such as United Way and Relay for Life. Within the school, the student council facilitates Spirit Week, Valentine s Day activities, and many more events. PMS Student Council is affiliated with The Georgia Association of Student Councils. Hannah Schuerman Deanna Rogers Informational meeting on August 10 th then will meet 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd Thursdays of every month at 8:15am. Meetings will be the 3 rd Thursday of every month at 8:15am. Elections will be August 31 st. Elevate Students is a mentoring program that will help students gain a connection to school and help teach character building skills that will help middle schoolers navigate the pathways of their tween and early teenage years. Girls Run It is a running club for girls to help instill confidence and comradery among their peer group. Sports Stacking Club - This is an advanced sport stacking club with the focus on fine tuning our skills and preparing to stack in tournaments. 5 During Café Ole students will practice their Spanish conversation skills with other students at the same level. Anna Pascale & Sury Von Sander 3 rd Friday of every month at 8:15 am. Qué Rico! Once a month students and parents are invited to meet for dinner at one of the many authentic Latin American restaurants in our community for a fully immersive Spanish language experience. Chicas de Ciencia Caliente Mock Trial - An exciting and unique competitive extracurricular activity, which blends aspects of debate and acting into the presentation of a simulated court case. Students learn about the American court system and procedures while portraying lawyers and witnesses. Mock trial develops and enhances students critical thinking and problemsolving skills, public speaking ability, work ethic, and selfconfidence in a team environment. Through the process of preparing the mock trial case, students develop and sharpen their abilities to think logically and critically, to argue persuasively and passionately, and to write and speak clearly and succinctly.
