2 Page 2, HCubed, June 2017 Happy Hopper Year End Report Thanks to the efforts of ALL Hoppers, we have had a very successful dance season. We met our club goals of having at least 30 students to start the lessons; bringing in at least 15 new members for the year; and having at least 10 squares for our National Callers. Our Club membership is also growing, which is a very healthy attribute. To the best of my knowledge, we are the largest square dance club in the MBC, and perhaps even in the state. We recruit and introduce new students into the fun and excitement of square dancing. Our fantastic Class Coordinators, Eric and Cindy Selby and the Angels that spend their valuable time Monday evenings are essential to this effort. Many of our students are in awe of the HH membership and the genuine warmth and friendship they see between us. They quickly learn that the HH are like a family (we are), and they want to be part of that family after they graduate. And our club can continue to grow and prosper if we can sustain this effort. We have been successful financially this year as well, increasing our bottom line by a considerable amount (Ron James will report the actual amount at the last business meeting on June 13). The Hoppers are a Real Team. Everyone steps forward to help the club succeed. There are an incredible number of tasks and activities that must be accomplished to make our club run smoothly and efficiently and we can only be successful if we all work together to make it happen. One example of this teamwork and complexity is Publicity. At the beginning of the dance season, the schedule is known because the booking agent has hired callers and cuers for the first and third Saturdays of the month. But the Themes for the dances need to be created, and Marlys leads that effort. Then Melody develops a single page flyer listing all of our dances, including the caller, cuer, and Themes for the entire dance season. Melody then creates the colorful and informative flyers for each of the 18 dances. Al Jeschke develops the ads for the MBC Notes, Promenading Around The Sound, and Footnotes and sends the ads to them. He also loads the ads onto the MBC website (he is the webmaster for the MBC). He forwards billing information to Ron James who pays the bills. Clara Grager loads the flyers onto our HH website (and removes old flyers) and Patty Schiller places them onto our new Facebook page, which she recently developed (thank you, Patty). Then Jean Raymond makes color copies which are distributed to the various clubs at the monthly MBC meeting by our Council Delegates. And finally, a HH representative usually makes announcements of upcoming Happy Hopper dances at other club dances. This is just one example; others are equally as complex, and some less so. But they are all vital to making our club run smoothly so that the HH and our guests enjoy themselves, and leave knowing that they always have a good time at our dances and are excited about coming back again and again. Our caravans to the other MBC Clubs are renowned, bringing them not only financial support, but also our energy and enthusiasm. Thanks to Evelyn Orona and Jim LaMontagne for being the co-chairs of this important function. And a special thank you goes to the outgoing Board members for their dedicated service to the club and the outstanding effort they provided to help keep us moving forward. Tinamarie Hephzibah, club secretary prepares excellent club meeting minutes, and has been effective and efficient in our club communications, all the while working full time and being an active member of her church. Treasurers Ron and Sharon James have been instrumental in collecting the receipts, and providing detailed monthly financial reports. They even arranged for their community clubhouse to be used by the Hoppers for two special occasions.

3 Page 3, HCubed, June 2017 Frank Rousseau and Kenny Price are always on hand to open and close the Senior Center along with performing many more crucial activities for the club above and beyond their official roles as VP. You are the most wonderful, fun, energetic, and giving group, I have ever been associated with and it has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your president for the last two years. And with your help and the Happy Hopper spirit, we will have another successful and fun-filled year for ! Stay safe, and see you on the dance floor this summer! Rod PS: One quick reminder, since we don t want to get the old boot please consider signing up for the Winthrop Square Dance Festival prior to Sept 1. This is a very fun event and a chance to follow-up the Happy Hopper victory last year with another one this year (mmmm, that chocolate is going to taste even better this year!!!!). 7 Page 7, HCubed June 2017 Cost $6 for everyone Subject: Bumper/Window Stickers and Car Magnets for Marketing Fall Lessons Hi Hoppers ~ From Rod We have purchased a few bumper/window stickers to publicize our fall lessons. See the pic. We also have a few car magnets to advertise (see pic of car magnet on the side of my car). If any Happy Hopper would like to affix a bumper sticker to their bumper or tape it to their back window, please let me know so it can be arranged to get the sticker to you. Also, we have five car magnets that I would like to distribute. They are very colorful and easy to read, easy to install and attract a lot of attention, as I found out yesterday (I noticed several people checking out the advertisement as I was refueling my car or parking at Costco/Wal Mart). They stick to the car very well (I was driving at 70+ with no problem) but are easy to remove and re-position. I do not believe they would damage the car finish based on the design. It would be preferable Arlington, Snohomish, few of them, my among our members target area. if you drive a lot in our club area (Marysville, Lake Stevens, Everett, etc.). Since we only have a thought would be that we could rotate them every three weeks or so, to reach the biggest Please let me know via if you would be willing to place a bumper sticker on your bumper (or tape it to the rear window) or attach a car magnet to your door. I am hoping that these new advertising techniques, along with our radio advertisements and our normal recruiting tools will allow us to meet the goal of having at least 40 students at our next class. Have a wonderful summer and Happy Dancing! ** Hoppers are about DANCING!!! We will be recruiting in many of the same ways as last year (signs, online ads, the Cow Tipper, public notifications, setting up a stand at Walmart or other grocery stores, etc.). We also have our website and Patty Schiller just created a Happy Hopper Facebook page to get photos and club information out to the public. But the most effective approach is personal contact by our members letting their friends, co-workers, neighbors, family members, etc. know how much fun our activity can be.

8 Page 8, HCubed June 2017 We also plan on advertising on a local country radio station in Everett in the two three weeks prior to the start of the lessons. The ads are 30 seconds long and cost around $36 for each airing. During the business meeting in March, several members volunteered to sponsor an add and save the club some money. If you are interested in sponsoring a 30 second ad, or even sponsoring half of one ($18) please let me know so we can plan on how many spots we can purchase for the advertising. The radio station will also feature us on their website and may give us some free promos during the broadcast day. It is all part of creating a buzz about our lessons and using multi-media to reach as many people as possible. REMINDER******REMINDER******REMINDER DANCE DUTIES Dance Duty Schedule is in process for Dances. Bertha Davidson has volunteered to be the Volunteer Coordinator. Should this position by added to the list of standing committees?? Consensus was YES at the June 13 Business Meeting. Volunteer lists will be divided into three schedules to eliminate duplication. Thank You Hoppers for club dances to make them as Volunteer and do your Share. all the time you give to the successful as they are!!! ~ C A R A V A N S ~ Outgoing Caravan Schedule ~ September 2017 Date Club Caller Theme (if any) Friday, Sept 8 Dudes n Dolls Scott Coon Unknown The complete caravan schedule will be in the new Membership Manual to be distributed soon. 11 Page 11, HCubed June 2017 Need for Dancers for Square Dance Demonstration ~ July 7, 2017from Ellen Ostrom, Whirlybirds Member and Corresponding Secretary for Mt. Baker Council. Fellow Square Dancers, Club Presidents and Vice Presidents Thanks to Gordon Shafer we have been invited to hold a one hour demonstration dance at the Arlington Airport during their Fly-In on Friday evening July 7 th, Ray Gallagher has agreed to call for the event! We will need 2 3 squares of dancers for the demonstration. This demonstration is the same weekend as Leadership at Circle 8 and the BC Festival in Cloverdale, BC. The information below is supplied by Will Beard from the Arlington Fly-In committee: Details at this point are: 1) Square Dancing from 6 to 7 pm 2) Our liability insurance covers all ground (not airborne) activities 3) The facilities manager promised me, you would have a hard surface to dance on 4) After your dance presentation, there will be a jam band for generic dancing until about 8:30 pm which you are welcome to participate in. The group was really excited about how this is coming together, especially how it starts with the Square dance demonstration prior to the Jam Session. After dark on July 7 th, after the dancing is over, weather permitting we will have what is called a Balloon Glow and a movie at our outdoor theater (like an old-fashioned drive except you walk up with lawn chair and cooler). A balloon glow is with hot air balloons tethered and using the gas bag as a huge lamp shade, usually 4 to 7 balloons and turned off and on to music. Also, now it looks like that we will have you down by our food court area which is also adjacent to our on-site camping which should give you the greatest exposure and draw the most people at the 6 to 7 time of day. This is a great opportunity for Square dancing to be exhibited to a group outside our normal audience. This is a great opportunity to market Happy Hoppers dance lessons with a place to exhibit flyers. If you are interested in supporting this event please contact: Ellen Ostrum at ellenostrum@gmail.com or Rod Davidson for Happy Hopper participation. Please reply ASAP

The club with the most pre-registered dancers is awarded the coveted Golden Spurs. We don t want to get The Boot. Also call Jean at if you want a spot for your RV. They are going fast!!
