1 Superintendent M essage Febr uar y 4, 2019 Dear Judson ISD Team: THOUGHTS FROM DR. BALL I hope that each of you had a great weekend regardless if your team lost or won. The Super Bowl Championship game is always an exciting event to watch even if you are not a football fan. It comes with interesting commercials and the show at halftime is usually creative and entertaining. But here at Judson ISD it's like a Super Bowl Championship every day. One of the struggles that I am having is trying to fit in all the wonderful, dynamic, and creative things going on at the campuses...there are just so many. Truly there are great things going on everywhere, so if you are not highlighted on my message it is only because I do not want to make this 20 pages long and have no one read it. Keep in mind those stories may also appear in places like the website, social media, or the Judson Post. In addition, I want to give the teachers at Wortham Wort ham parent s and st udent s Oaks Elementary a huge shout out. They have been loved get t ing t o see t heir classroom the busiest little "Wild Cats" getting ready for the first and t alk t o t heir t eacher day at their campus. Today is the first day of classes there and I could not be prouder of them. They are Rock Stars in my book!! Spring Meadow s Elem ent ary Principal Dest iny Barrera t ook Holdsw ort h represent at ives on a t our of her cam pus. On Thursday of last week we had a very important visit from the Holdsworth Executive Team. Spring Meadows hosted us and did an outstanding job. I am so appreciative of all the staff for allowing us to spend all day there and disrupt their schedule. They shined beautifully. Not only did the campus look amazing, their rock garden is out of this world! The classrooms were impressive and engaging. What stood out the most however was the climate and culture on that campus. The minute you walk on the campus you feel the love, caring and respect that individuals there have for each other.

2 SUCCESS and Fun AROUND JISD Wrestling Gold For This Rock et Wrest ling is a unique sport t hat t est s an individual's st amina and perseverance. Judson High School wrest ler Luis Rodriguez showed he had it all. He brought home a gold medal recent ly from a t ournament at Vet erans Memorial HS in Corpus Christ i. Luis went 4 and 0 and won 1st place in his weight division. Luis is t he first Judson wrest ler t o win a varsit y gold medal since Aaron Walker in Congrat ulat ions on a great performance! R o d e o R a l l y At Miller's Point KENS 5 and a number of San Ant onio Rodeo volunt eers came out t o Miller's Point Element ary recent ly for a root in'-t oot in' Rodeo Rally. The event was host ed before school in t he cafet eria and feat ured a number of fun relays and games in t he rodeo spirit. Thanks t o Miller's Point t eachers Marilyn McKinney and Shelly Ascolese for t heir ent husiast ic " Dance Off" performance. The kids and st aff enjoyed it all.

3 Board Advisory Meetings A chance to be heard Judson ISD has a number of advisory committees that help bring in community feedback and expert perspective to a number of different areas in which the district is investing time and money. The public is invited to any or all of these meetings to bring their views and suggestions to the mix. - Bond, Building/Facilities Board Advisory Committee Meeting? February 6th, 6 pm, ERC Conference Room A Top Cheer Rocket Cheer Shoot To The Top The Judson Cheerleaders competed in the National Cheerleaders Association National competition in Dallas the last weekend in January. These athletes placed 3rd in their division. The young men and women of the team have also garnered two 1st place wins at the Cheer Star and Cheer America Competitions earlier this month.

4 It's Career and Technology Education M onth Most people in education know what CTE or Career and Technology Education is all about, but do you know how big the CTE program is here at Judson ISD? There are more than 30 pathways within the CTE Department that offer certifications so that students can go straight into the workplace with confidence and start a career of their choice. Over the next several weeks we'll be posting photos on the district website from programs that represent CTE offerings that are familiar to you and maybe some that are not. It's one big way JISD works to get our students prepared for life after high school.

5 It's National School Counseling Week! Director of Guidance and Counseling Monica Garcia with Dr. Ball and JHS Principal Jesse Hernandez Counselors in public schools are a tremendous asset and resource for their campus. This week, February 4th through the 8th is National Counselors Week and we want to encourage everyone? students, teachers, and staff to show your campus counselor how much you appreciate them. They have to be good listeners and be willing to help others, especially when there doesn?t seem to be any good answers and many times they are the go-to-person when kids are dealing with difficult circumstances. When students need help making decisions about life or about their class schedule, they are there too. So celebrate these wonderful professionals who help our students and staff out every day in so many ways. Candlewood Hosts Car eer Day! Exposing kids to the different career pathways is helpful in many ways. It gives young students the chance to think about what's out there to do without feeling pressure of needing to know what that might be right now. Career Day at Candlewood featured an array of different professions, trades and careers that helped stimulate their imagination and get the wheels of their minds rolling. From first responders and musicians, to real estate agents, the Candlewood counseling staff put together a great event.

All young people should be prepared to think deeply so that they have the chance to become the innovators, educators, researchers, and leaders who can solve the most pressing challenges facing our nation and our world, both today and tomorrow. There is high interest in the program because of the dynamic curriculum and project-based learning as well as the extensive opportunities for academic competitions. Make plans to attend one of the informational parent meetings that will answer any questions that you may have about the school within a school. We will discuss everything that will help you decide if this is the right middle school program for your child. You'll be able to meet the teachers, tour the school, and hear from current students and parents.
