1 B u s i n e s s N a m e A District Wide Look By: Eric Rathbone, David Gaylord, Jess Smith, Mykenzie Kane, and Zach Wood INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Heat Baseball 2 cheerleading 2 Speech 2 Girls Basketball 3 Meet the 6th Grade 4 Fashion 4 When was in MS 4 Oculus Rift 5 Cross Word 5 Horoscopes 5 Editors Notes Don t Forget anyone can submit things to the Heat wave. Just see Mr. Harris with any questions on this If you need advice on something or a question you would like to see answered in our advice column put it in the advice box next to the office Find a grammatical error in the heat wave that we missed? Show Mr. Harris and if you are the first student to point out this error you will receive 1 heat buck! We have looked at district 235 as a whole and the transitions through the 3 schools. The middle school, the high school, and the elementary have differences and similarities. The elementary is the start of the district 235 school system. Students come in Kindergarten ready to start their school life off in Biggsville, IL. The elementary has some activities that are exclusive to that school. There are some different PE games in the elementary. They have archery, colony ball, and butterball, but the middle school and the high school do not have these games. In the elementary, you stay with the same teacher for most of your classes and also have cards that show how you are being through the day. Additionally, at the elementary you have other special days like Donuts with Dad and Muffins with Mom. Once you enter 5th grade, you have the choice of doing band which will lead into your middle school and high school life. The middle school has many different opportunities, and life in a new school for three years. Like the middle school, the high school has a school play. However, the elementary doesn t have a play. The middle school has the Harry Potter club, a speech team, and the introduction of school sponsored sports. Students also begin switching classrooms more often and having a variety of different teachers. We have interviewed two sixth graders: Molly Johnson and Sadie Lenz. We asked them 2 questions about middle school and how they are doing in middle school. The first question we asked them was what they miss from elementary school. Molly answered Nothing. Sadie answered The teachers. The second question we asked them was what they like about middle school. Molly answered Switching classes. Sadie answered Getting to see different people throughout the day. To me it sounds like Sadie and Molly like middle school! The school newspaper also interviewed two 8th graders one boy and one girl. We wanted to know what they thought about high school and middle school. First, we asked the 8th grade girl Brimmie M what her favorite part of middle school was. She said she loved getting to see all of her friends. Next we asked her what she was excited about for high school, she said she was excited to get her drivers license! Then, we interviewed the 8th grade boy, Eric C. we also asked him what his favorite part of school was. He said he loved doing track at the end of the year. After that we asked him what he was excited about for high school? He replied with he gets to see his friends. These are two of the 8th graders opinions on what they look forward to! And of course, GO HEAT! The high school sends you back to Biggsville and offers a whole new list of opportunities. The high school has FFA but the others don t have the FFA. Once students get to age 15, they can start driver s ed. Other things that the high school offers are 3 new sports: bowling, golf, and trap shooting. In addition to those things, the high school also has many more classes like home economics, ag, woodshop, and many more advanced classes, and band takes an actual class period. Both the middle school and high school offer basketball, baseball, football, cheerleading, and track. However, the high school plays in a different conference so athletes see completely different teams. One similarity is that they all have Christmas and Spring concerts Each school offers different opportunities that all change during your school life. Hopefully at West Central you find something that you will love to do and maybe even turn into a career. The ALS ice bucket challenge was accepted Thursday the 19th of September. The student council was challenged by Mrs. Lox on August 22. The student council raised 210 dollars and Wesley Stewart, Sloan Fisher, Corrine Booton, Mr. Conlee and Mr. Nichols got soaked with ice water at 3 o clock that Thursday. Ryan Lumbeck, Tucker Peterson, Kendra Cole, Jason Strack, and Cheyenne Lee dumped water on their heads. ALS Challenge accepted

2 Page 2 Baseball in the cold! By David Gaylord Friday s game in La Harpe against the Colchester Cyclones was a frigid one. West Centrals loss of 5 to 7 was a close one. There was only one injury in the game, Nathan Bigger caught a line drive on a hit and left the game with only a bruise. The game started out like any normal game would, the scores stay tied. Then in the fourth inning the Cyclones took charge and got 6 runs adding up to a total of seven. West Centrals defense kept the Cyclones at 7 runs until their final at bat. In the bottom of the seventh West Central rallied to 5 runs, but got stopped there with the final out of the game. The game didn t prove that West Central could just get beat, but that West Central always has hope. Mendon Regional The West Central boy s baseball season has came to a close after a hard fought regional battle. The game started off a defensive battle with starting pitcher only giving up 2 runs through the first 4 innings. In the 5th inning the teams pitching started to allow more runners on base and the Nauvoo squad added 5 more runs. The Heat finished the game with closing pitcher Landon Beelman. In the 7th inning the West Central team tried to mount a comeback but could only put 2 7th inning runs on the scoreboard, finishing the game 7-2. The future looks bright for the West Central boy s baseball team, and I for one am looking forward to next season. Coach Harris WCMS Cheerleading By Jess Smith, Mykenzie Kane We have interviewed Ms. Janacek, the 7 th and 8 th grade cheerleading coach. We have asked her a series of 5 questions. She said that she enjoys being a coach because It s a great way to interact with the students outside of school and a good way to show school spirit. She has been a cheerleading coach ever since school has started. She has also never been a cheerleader in her school career. Ms. Janacek said that she has wanted to be a cheer coach for awhile. Here are the 7 th grade cheerleaders: Haven Simmons, Kendra Cole, Brenna Lillie, Hannah Roller, Haley Avery, Leah Coventon, Diana Reyes, and Brianna Kinkaid 8 th grade cheerleaders: Maya Erxleben, Abby Dowell, Megan Buster, and Carlee Link WCMS Speech Team: A competition of a different kind By: Camryn Fryrear For those of you in speech you know what it s like. But for those of you that didn t go out for speech because you didn t know what it was like. I m here to tell you that you have nothing to worry about. Speech, like other after school activities is not mandatory. But those of you that don t know what it s like stay tuned! Speech is ran by Mrs. Lox like most of you know. All you have to do is go to a parent meeting and pick out a speech. Then you pick a day you want to stay after school and practice. You do have to memorize it, and you also go to competition. But since speech has already started you will have to catch it next year. For you 7 th and 8 th graders out there, you can do improv this year! Sorry 6 th graders you have to wait until next year. Improv is when the judges pick out 3 cards out and you have to go off of a sentence from those cards. You have 2 minutes to make up a mini play using that information. The first competition is Tuesday October 28 th,, it will be held at West Central Middle School. The time of the competition is not for sure, and the date of the competition is not set-in-stone. Once the speech time has been notified I will make a special announcement. If you are interested in doing speech or improv next year, you need to consult with Mrs. Lox first. Improv is still open for more people to sign up. So get a pencil and sign up! Once you have signed up we ll be glad to have you on the team!

The videos were great and the dance was a lot of fun. Now get out there follow expectations and earn those heatbucks. Nike and Under Armor were the most common brands people preferred. The staff wasn t that choosy, but the students were. We interviewed 16 students, and here were the votes: 9 students chose Nike. Most of the votes for Nike were from guys like Tyler Collins and Wesley Stewart. Four students voted for Under Armor. Three of them were girls, and 1 guy. Leah Coventon, Haley Avery, and Brianna Kinkaid were three of the girls who voted for Under Armor. Douglas Hammit was also for Under Armor. Two students voted for Jordans. Landen Beelman and Christain Sloan were the only ones that voted for Jordans! So the most common, most liked brand was Nike. The staff were not too picky, although there were a couple that were. We interviewed 10 staff members. One staff member said, he isn t too picky, though he likes comfortable and durable shirts. Anything West Central of course! he told us. We also talked to another staff member about his favorite sportswear and he said: I just like good quality shoes. We have heard some of the best sports apparel comments yet!
