1 LHS School Newsletter, Issue #14 February 5, 2016 Lutheran High School Home of the Gryphons I would like to wish everyone a safe and Happy Mardi Gras holiday. If you are attending parades, please be aware of your surroundings at all times. If you are attending Pandora on Monday, look for our own LHS cheerleaders who will be marching in the parade. We wish our boys and girls basketball teams luck as the varsity boys basketball team plays Bishop McManus today, and both boys and girls teams play Grand Isle on Monday. Soccer season has ended, and we thank our soccer players for their hardwork and good sportsmanship during the season. We will be conducting an Admissions Open House on February 23rd from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for new students. Please let us know if you are interested in volunteering to conduct new parent tours by calling the office. If you know of anyone who is interested in attend- ing Lutheran High School, please encourage them to attend the open house. In other upcoming events, our choir will sing at Mt.Olive Lutheran Church on Sunday, February 21st. We hope you will come out and enjoy the service and the choir. On March 19th, we will hold our Gryphon Gala where parents and supporters may enjoy a social, dinner, silent and live auctions, music and a night of fun! The theme is A Gryphon Homecoming where we will celebrate what it means to be a LHS Gryphon. Look for your invitation in the mail! As a reminder, all cell phones should remain in student bookbags when a student is on campus. There is no reason for a student to use a cell phone during the school day. If a student needs to contact a parent or family member, there is a phone in the office for student use. Parents are always welcome to call the school office to communicate important messages with students. Again, Happy Mardi Gras! Have fun and stay safe! February 5th: Varsity Boys Basketball vs. Bishop McManus February 8 - February 12th: NO SCHOOL Mardi Gras Holidays February 8th: Boys Basketball and Girls Basketball vs. Grand Isle Cheerleaders march in Pandora February 12th: Boys Basketball at Bishop McManus February 17th: World War II Museum Field Trip February 21st: Choir Sings at Mt. Olive Lutheran at 8 a.m. February 23rd: Open House, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. March 19th: LHS Gryphon Gala starting at 5 p.m. A Gryphon Homecoming is the theme and all proceeds will benefit Lutehran High School. Social, dinner, silent and live auction, music, and fun!

2 Chapel News This year's Chapel theme is: peace. Mission Team News: John 14:27: "[Jesus said,] Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid." We will spend time contemplating how the Gospel of Christ brings about the "peace of God, which transcends all understanding." The Mission Team is now taking applications for the 2016 Summer Mission Trip to Newark, New Jersey to work with Liberian Immigrants. See Mr. Taylor for more information and application packets. Also, plan to volunteer at the first Mission Team fundraiser on February 6th at St. John's Family Fest on the Endymion parade route. Mission Team members raise money to offset the price of their trip. Other volunteers will receive service hours. You can volunteer for a shift, or for the whole day, starting at 8 a.m. and continuing till about 7 p.m. For questions, and to sign up talk with Mr. Taylor. Chapel services for the school are held every Tuesday morning at 9:27 a.m. in First English Lutheran church, located behind the school campus. Parents and grandparents are welcome to join us for worship. We do collect an offering each week that supports various ministries and charities. This quarter we are supporting Crossing Cambodia, a mission that serves street kids in Battambang, Cambodia. It is not mandatory for the students to bring an offering, but it is a good way to teach them that we all have a responsibility to be stewards of God's gifts, and to help and be there for others. World War II Museum Field Trip: Mr. Dauss and Ms. Fields American history classes will be going on a field trip to the World War II Museum on February 17th. In addition to the museum tour, the students will take part in the new 4D Movie Beyond All Boundaries movie experience. Cost of the field trip is $25 and includes bus, musuem admisssion, and the 4D movie experience. Students should bring extra money for lunch or bring a lunch from home. Field trip forms have been sent home with students and should be returned by Monday, February 15th.

3 Counselor s Corner Hello students and parents! A reminder that I am available for counseling during the following periods: 1st, 2nd, 5th (1st lunch) and 7th. Students can come to me for academic, college/career, and personal issues. I hope that each and every student can feel comfortable talking to me and coming to me with problems. JUNIORS AND SENIORS: As always, stop by the Counseling Office to speak with Mrs. Robin about college and career opportunities that are right for you! REMEMBER: ACT test dates are happening throughout the year, as listed in this newsletter. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Robin or Mrs. Loughmiller. ATTENTION STUDENTS INTERESTED IN A POSSIBLE FUTURE IN LAW! Have you ever thought about being a lawyer? Interested in the legal field? The Louisiana State Bar Association has put together a summer internship program aimed at high school students interested in a future in law. The threeweek program is designed to introduce students to lawyers, legal documents, and the legal system with the overarching goal of asking students: Do you really want to be a lawyer? Students who wish to apply can see Mrs. Robin for more details! Tulane University Preview Days Tulane University will be hosting its Campus Preview Days next month. This is an opportunity for high school juniors and sophomores to spend a day on Tulane s campus exploring the academic, cultural, and social opportunities at the university. The program takes place on ONE of the following days: Monday, February 15th; Wednesday, February 17th; or Friday, February 19th. It is a full day event beginning at 8:35am. Lunch will be provided. To register, visit explore-uno. Horatio Alger Louisiana Scholarship Program ATTENTION SENIORS OF 2016! 4 Athletic News LHSAA Reminder on Sportsmanship LHS received a video reminder from the LHSAA stressing the importance of good sportsmanship. LHS expects its players, coaches and fans to refrain from inappropriate language and actions at all sporting events. Officials and school administrators have the right to implement sanctions that may suspend play temporarily and/or for an extended period of time. At LHS we expect our athletes to use their God given talents to the best of their ability while modeling their behavior after Christ show respect for the game and be gracious in both victory and defeat. Mount Olive Gym Set-up and Clean-up Mount Olive Lutheran Church and School is gracious enough to allow us to use its gym, but, during the week this is a preschool facility. In order for us to use it to play basketball, we must move certain items and set-up the bleachers for our crowd. At the end of the games, we must return it to preschool readiness. If your child is on the boys or girls basketball team or a cheerleader, he or she is expected to help with clean-up after the game. Parents are also welcome to help! The more people we have involved, the quicker everyone gets to go home! Mt. Olive Parking ATHLETIC ADMISSION PRICES - To help cover the cost of officials, schools charge admission to athletic competitions. The majority of schools, including LHS, will charge the following: $5.00 for Adults, $3.00 for Students, Free for 5 and under. We admit LHS students free to our home games but they will be expected to pay at away games. Geaux Gryphons! Parking Reminder at Mount Olive please park in either the parking lot or the vacant lot across the street. There is limited street parking and you are NOT to park beyond the No Parking Beyond This Point sign. It is a privilege to be able to use their gym and we need to be respectful of their neighbors. Basketball Update The boys and girls basketball teams continue to work hard and play in games and tournaments in our distric. Thank you to our athletes, families and fans for their continued support of our LHS Gryphons as we continue our season! Please see the attached schedule for upcoming games. Track Season Starting The sign-up sheet for track has been posted outside Ms. Loughmiller's room. Practice will begin sometime after Mardi Gras break. Ms. Loughmiller will be reviewing mid-quarter grades prior to the start of practice. Those student athletes with D's or F's will need to meet with Ms. Loughmiller before being allowed to start the season. Join our LHS Cheerleaders at the Krewe of Pandora! Our cheerleaders will be marching in the parade. Pandora will roll on Monday, February 8, 2016 at 7pm on the traditional Metairie parade route.

7 LHSAA Eligibility LHSAA Second Semester Eligibility The following LHSAA regulation governs second semester eligibility: Second Semester Eligibility: To be eligible for the second semester of the school year, a student shall pass at least six (6) subjects from the first semester. What this means at LHS is that if your child is enrolled in eight (8) classes, he or she must pass at least six (6) classes. A D is considered passing, if your child fails two (2) classes for the semester he or she remains eligible. If your child is enrolled in a study hall, he or she may only fail one (1) class to remain eligible. Academics are the priority at LHS. Failing grades are a concern to the faculty and staff. But, due to the nature of the team concept of basketball and soccer which cross eligibility periods, team members are allowed to remain on those teams through the end of their seasons which occur either the last week of January or the first week of February. As a note, the LHSAA regulation governing first semester eligibility is as follows: First Semester Eligibility: To be eligible for the first semester of the school year, returning students shall have earned at least six (6) units from the previous school year, which shall be listed on the student s transcript and shall have earned at least a C average as determined by the Local Education Authority when considering all graded subjects. First semester eligibility is determined after summer school grades have been received by LHS. Grades of student athletes will again be reviewed at Mid Quarter #3 (after February 3rd). Those student athletes with D s or F s will be counseled before determining whether or not they should be allowed to participate in track. Track will begin following Mardi Gras break. ACT Test Dates Registration must be completed online at Lutheran High is a test center and is available for three (3) of the six (6) test dates. Students needing accommodations should contact Ms. Robin and begin the application process as soon as possible. For more information, refer to the ACT website. CORRECTION: Lutheran High is offering the February 6th test but not the April 9th test.
