2 St. Patrick s Day From Local to Global Everyone's Irish on St. Patrick's Day, and that means everyone -- worldwide. Somehow a local celebration of a revered holy man became a global celebration. St. Patrick himself is a sympathetic figure. Most of what is known about the 5th century missionary and bishop comes from The Confessio -- written by the man himself. In it, Patrick, who is thought to have been born in Roman Britain, tells of being kidnapped at 14 by Irish raiders who enslaved him. Patrick wrote that, after six years as a slave, the voice of God guided him to a ship waiting to take him home. In Britain, he studied to become a priest before returning to Ireland. There he worked miracles and converted thousands to Christianity, famously using a shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity. Patrick is said to have died in 461 on the 17th of March, a day that became a Christian feast day in the early 17th century. It started as a public holiday in a few places - the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, a British colony called Montserrat and two Canadian provinces, Labrador and Newfoundland. What started small is now a global celebration. In the 21st century, there are celebrations as far afield as New Zealand, Argentina, and Tokyo as well as closer to home in places like New Orleans in the US state of Louisiana and in the Canadian city of Montreal. Health Corner Changes in lifestyle can help manage type 2 diabetes, while lifting overall health and energy. Type 2 diabetes is a progressive condition; the body becomes less and less resistant to insulin as time goes on. Not managing diabetes properly can result in a range of complications such as cardiovascular disease, blindness and kidney disease. However, it is possible to slow the progress of diabetes through a healthy diet and regular activity. Improving the quality, and in some instances, reducing the quantity, of food will help control blood sugar levels and can decrease body weight. The American Diabetes Association broadly recommends focusing on eating more non-starchy vegetables and less starchy foods and meat. The Harvard School of Public Health recommends whole grains over highly processed carbohydrates; avoiding sugary drinks; choosing healthy fats (such as olive oil); and limiting red meat consumption. Physical activity keeps the body in general good health, so no wonder it helps manage diabetes. Exercise removes sugars from the blood, by using them to power movement. Diabetes Australia recommends 30 minutes of moderate activity five days a week, which is in line with international recommendations. Regularly monitoring blood glucose is an important step to understand how effectively diabetes is being managed. Monitoring is usually done daily at home with a finger prick. For those with type 2 diabetes, making simple yet effective lifestyle changes can have a huge impact on longevity. Managing body weight, regular exercise and healthy eating can help reduce the effect of type 2 diabetes on your health.

9 Resident Forum Wednesday, March 1:30 PM (CR) John Shumway s Corner Activities Forum Wednesday, March 1:00 PM (CR) The admission of California to the United States was a major event in the history of this nation. During the first half of the 19 th century the conflict between the states with slavery and the states without slavery became less and less manageable without massive conflict, perhaps leading to war. Between 1844 and 1846 the US did wage aggressive war against Mexico and won a great victory. One result of this overwhelming victory was the annexation of about one million square miles of what had been Mexican territory to the United States. This included a strange bit of coast land along the Pacific called California. In truth the American government did not care that much about California but they very much wanted the great port of San Francisco, the Gateway to the Pacific. In 1849 there were 30 United States, 15 slave; 15 free. This kept the Senate balanced with 30 Senators from each side. Unfortunately for the slave-holding South, the huge area annexed from Mexico would likely contain many more free than slave states. What Southern Leaders feared most was they could see the day ahead when three fourths of the states would be free. Then the Constitution could be amended to end slavery. (This is, in fact, what happened in 1865 after the end of the Civil War.) Southern leaders hoped to postpone creating any new states in this massive territory as long as possible. Then something incredible happened. In January, 1848 [January 24 it was] a fellow named James Marshall was wandering around by Sutter Creek, near the small town of Coloma, California. He was planning to build a sawmill there. Out of the corner of his eye he saw something shiny on the ground. He picked it up and the whole world changed! 12 We never cease to be and we never cease to expand (the mind) the only thing in question is, in THIS moment of expansion, Are you having a joyful moment? Abraham-Hicks What I ve learned in my continuing studies is that God and the Universe is full of positive energy. It is available to all of us when we access it with the right attitude along with positive thoughts or words. When we focus on what we want instead of that which we do not want, we are accessing positive, constructive energy. For instance, if we are thirsty and yearning or craving a glass of water, we certainly do not fill a glass with sand and hope to quench our thirst, do we? No, of course not. We fill the glass with water and drink. Yet, with most of our desires, prayers, or pleas for change, we fill our glass with sand. FOCUS ON WHAT YOU WANT We want one thing, but keep asking for the opposite. Many of us really want/need change in our lives but just can t figure out why it isn t happening. For example, when we say, I m really worried about we ve set up the negative scene, identified our mood, involved more people by telling them about it (complaining), which gives it more negative energy, and rest assured, it is not going to serve you well. Another way we focus on negative energy is to say or think, I remember... and when we do that, if the memory is not pleasant or positive, we are reactivating everything that happened and giving it new powerful energy, and it instantly creates a negative mood. We can choose to be happy or sad, positive or negative. The responsibility is totally ours. For instance, today I had a most painful experience with someone and it fired up all the ingredients for me to create a negative mindset and ruin a perfectly good weekend. I had to decide if I would allow it to effect me or not. My children called to support me and reminded me that manure is best left on the ground. Bless them. And yes, we all need reminders because when we are deep in the midst of misery we tend to forget about using many of the tools we possess. The good news is that we don t have to be a victim to circumstances or to what others can activate around us. Now you can collect the tools you need and begin to practice activating the type of positive energy that does serve you well. It s important to remember that we cannot deactivate negative energy, because when we focus on negative energy, it activates negative energy. We will focus on that which is positive and good. To quote and/or paraphrase Abraham-Hicks, When you activate positive, constructive, energy on purpose, you change your point of attraction. And when you change your point of attraction, you change what happens to you. We want to practice activating positive energy so that we can become good at creating this positive energy around ourselves and while we practice getting better and better, we start the process of winning. Eventually it will become easy. Take these simple steps to help you develop positive energy: 1. Breaths deeply focus on your breathing for several minutes and relax. Breath is life. 2. Have an attitude of gratitude and appreciation right before you slumber 3. In the morning, assume an attitude of well-being no matter how you feel. 4. Go about your day expecting the best, focusing on well-being and a loving attitude. 5. Be intimately aware of the way that you feel - guide your thoughts so that they are positive and constructive. If things don t feel right within you, stop and ask yourself what is making you ornery, aggravated, irritable or disappointed about something. Is it because you aren t getting what you want? Are you feeling sorry for yourself? Now laugh at yourself and change your thoughts so you can enjoy your day. 6. At the end of the day, collect all the good thoughts and actions and put them in a pretend Gratitude Box you may want to write them down in a little notebook so that you can look at them often and see your list grow. That way you ll be able to watch yourself develop into a more positive person, and who knows, some of those wrinkles may disappear along with the negative thoughts you used to carry around. And make it fun and be joyful.
