1 Wednesday 13 September, 2017 Issue 14, 2017 PRINCIPAL S MESSAGES OPAHEKE TAKES OUT DRURY CHALLENGE Don t forget the HUI/FONO tonight in the staffroom. Dinner will be served at 6pm and children will be looked after. The meeting will finish at 7pm. See you there! Why not try some new Maori phrases this week here is a great resource online FIRST OF SEPTEMBER A SPECIAL DAY FOR TEACHERS It was nice to see so many students doing lovely things for their teachers on Teacher Appreciation Day. Some helped their teacher in some way, others gave them nice comments and some brought small treats. The Board of Trustees also provided a very nice morning tea for the staff. On Wednesday 6 August the rain stayed away just long enough for the annual rugby match between Opaheke School and Drury School to take place. This year it was at Drury School and when our team arrived they were surprised to see how big some of the Drury boys were. Here is an account of the game from Bethany Cantwell who managed the team on the day: Another victory to Opaheke School in A very muddy game but still plenty of running rugby was seen. Opaheke s forwards dominated play and gave our backs plenty of good ball. Drury School had some impressive impact players who scored some great tries. Final Score -37 Opaheke (7 tries and 1 conversion) -31 Drury (5 tries and 3 conversions) Try scorers for Opaheke were Campbell M, Kelton W (2). Calum O (2), Mathew M, Teiti S. Team: Nate T, Carter T, Jesse M, Matthew D (Captain), Josh W, Joe R, Calum O, Tim B, Liam H, Quilan T, Brynn C, Amore P, Matthew M, More T, Teiti S, Kobi T, Campbell M, Bryce P, Rico L, Kelton W A huge thanks to Mr Stuart Te Tamaki for preparing and coaching the team. Movie Night is this Friday at 5.30pm. Pay at the door CONTACT US Tasman Drive Papakura 2113 Phone (09) office@opaheke.school.nz Fax (09) Thank you to all the children who are punctual for school. Please ensure your child is in school for 8:25am. The side gates will be closed at this time. We encourage punctuality in order for students to be in and settled, ready for learning.
2 OUT OF ZONE ENROLMENT BALLOT 2017 Out of zone applications for enrolments for 2018 will be accepted from 9 August through to the 20 September A ballot will be held on 27 September. Any New Entrant children starting in 2018 who live out of the school zone need to be in the ballot even if they have older children already attending this school - siblings of students already at school are not automatically enrolled. 5 Context: Students have been reading the poems of significant poets- Robert Frost, William Blake, William Carlos Williams. They then either looked at the poem from another perspective or used the structure of the poem to help them write their own. Dark Woods On a Snowy Evening Who's this intruder Tramping in my dark gloomy woods? He must be searching For my personal goods Why won't he get out? Maybe I should call and shout I don't like this one bit He won t take anything; Nowt. Yay, hooray; He's stuck in the snow Deep in the snow Oh what a funny sight To see him so low His horse is shivering and shaking Oh what a noise; Oh what a fuss That horse is making That horse is making. By Amelia, Ilah, Holland, Harleen and Kaelyn The Journey By Alyssa & Ashton Inspired by Robert Frost Shivering cold, too cold for me. Snow up to my knees, I wish I could be free. He has pushed me to hard, I think it's time for us to leave. We are nowhere near home, in bed I soon hope to be. I feel him pulling, he wants to go faster. I'm too tired to carry on, But I must because he is my master. He has told me where he wants to go, This is coming to be a complete disaster. I'm falling asleep, darker I'm falling asleep, darker. Sea shells By Ilah Inspired by William Carlos The sun rose up Making the water glisten Collecting sea shells As pretty as jewels Stacking up sand In the shape of a castle Watching the crashing waves As it hits the sand The dogs all bark As seagulls swoop by Splashing and jumping While playing in the waves A pinch and an ouch As a crab comes along An ice cream is The way to cool down So Much by Holland So much depends Upon An inspiring, fantasy Book Full of great Words That my imagination Visualizes Inspired by William Carlos Williams Tiger Tiger By Harleen Inspired by William Blake Tiger Tiger look at you Running through mud as sticky as glue On people's flesh you'll chew Running without leaving a clue What a creature I have made His fangs as sharp as a dangerous blade Sleeping in his usual mood While the others are gone to look for food To have made you I am very glad Though the humans are greatly sad You're so scary you're so fierce Your fangs can go so deep and pierce Your stripes are fearful orange and black It's like you carry some screams in a sack You are the best of them all I am sure you'll never fall Now wake up tiger it's time to eat Your wife has bought you some fresh meat Grow bigger the human's fear It's time to eat some baby deer Tyger Tiger look at you Running through mud as sticky as glue On people's flesh you'll chew Running without leaving a clue
