1 Inside... We re off to see The Wizard! PSD News Term 1, 2016 Published 18 March, 2016 Welcome Back! I find it hard to believe I am already writing our end of term newsletter. What an incredibly fast term 1 that was! With a very early Easter this year our term comes to a close on Thursday 24th March. It has been such a pleasure to welcome so many new dancers into our dance family as well as seeing our students return from holidays refreshed, recharged and ready for an incredible year of dance at PSD. Summer for our senior students was full of the stuff that I could only dream of as a young dancer. Close to 30 of our dedicated senior students performed in Jason Coleman s Humanimals at the Cabaret Cathedral. I know that many of our younger dancers saw the show and loudly cheered the PSD kids along! I am eternally grateful to Jason for bestowing this opportunity upon us and to the cast and crew who welcomed us with open arms. A number of our students also participated in the Cecchetti Ballet summer school at Ormond College, Melbourne University and the Summer School at Jason Coleman s Ministry of Dance. Students enjoyed classes with some of Australia s best dancers, teachers and choreographers. They have all returned energized and inspired for the year ahead. We have soooooo much in store for you this year!! Make sure you take note of all the important diary dates listed in this newsletter. We have some wonderful events planned for the year including our mid-year production of The Wizard of Oz. This will be an event not to be missed! 2 Our Vision Peninsula School of Dance is hub of artistic expression and activity for young people. A place where young people are nurtured, challenged and inspired to be the best they can be. From Miss Carla s Desk... Our Hip Hop program for 2016 has started with a bang! Our Monday nights are filled with hip hop - 5 classes to be exact! The Boyz Hip Hop class is off to a great start - the boys are learning lots of cool break dance moves and freezes. Watch out for these boys - they have some amazing moves! Staff Training Did you know that our staff regularly participate in training and development? Over January the team spent 2 full days together at the studio focusing on teaching practices, childhood development and injury prevention. D-Step has expanded! Due to popular demand we now have 3 crews - D-Step Mineez, D-Step Juniorz and D-Step. The D-step crews have been working very hard, and we have lots of events lined up for them. The Crew s have already performed at the Boneo PS Family Fun night and the SES Family Fun Day. They were warmly received by the crowds! Miss Carla Carla Colson

3 PSD Parties Did you know that Peninsula School of Dance offers Birthday Parties? A delightful Ballerina Party package includes invitations, venue, party host, party bags & prizes for guests, and a delicious catered morning or afternoon tea. All you have to do is turn up with a Birthday Cake! A fuss free, delightful experience for all! From a recent happy customer: Thankyou so much for making Bethys birthday so special. From the moment we walked in we were impressed with all the work that had gone into preparations. Sophie was an absolute delight and did a wonderful job of entertaining the kids. Annual Choreographic Competition Starting Saturday 28th May, 2016 The Annual Choreographic Competition is a long standing tradition of the Peninsula School of Dance. The names engraved on the trophies over the past 30 years of the competition show the beginnings of many professional performers and dancers from the school including Jason Coleman! More information will be available by the end of term. Teachers will be working with students in class to discuss the competition and help prepare them. 4 Acro Classes Our Acro program has continued to grow and we now offer classes on Tuesday & Friday evenings. Places are available but are limited so if your child is interested please book in for Term 2 ASAP! We re off to see the Wizard! Song and Dance s popularity continues to grow! Song and Dance s growing popularity has given us the inspiration and opportunity to put on a musical. After much consideration (and lots of waiting, on licence approval) we are very excited to be starting our preparation for The Wizard of Oz. This is a wonderful, family friendly musical with lots of strong roles for our senior students, and many smaller roles for the younger students. The first few weeks of class has reinforced for us, the huge amount of talent and potential that our students have, and all 3 classes have already been working on skills such as vocal projection and preservation (aka singing loudly without shouting) diction (pronouncing the words clearly) characterisation, confidence, and emotion, all of which are important ingredients for a great performance, and, as with most of what is learnt in the studio, skills that can be transferred into day to day life. 5 Staff Profile Mr. D! Damian Clemens - Acro We are thrilled to have Damian as part of our team this year. Damian s energy and expertise have meant that our Acro classes have been a huge hit with students! Damian is an experienced fitness and personal training professional having been in the Health and Fitness industry since He started his career as a Gymnastics coach, which saw him develop a passion for helping growing kids develop their love for, and skills in physical exercise. After studies in Human Movement at Deakin University, he moved into the Personal training industry, working in gyms and boutique training studios, continually developing and honing his knowledge, skills and passion for helping people at all levels of fitness make healthy changes in their lives. Together with his wife Katherine, Damian owns Breathe Life Mind. Body. Fitness. a boutique health and wellness company which provides personal, group and corporate fitness training on the Mornington Peninsula and Melbourne CBD. Since becoming a father of 3 Damian has a more unique appreciation of the physical and emotional development phases of children, and incorporates this knowledge into his kids fitness programs. When time allows (not much with a business and 3 kids) Damian enjoys playing guitar and singing out of tune, rock climbing and fantasy football. Social Us! 8 Young Performers Award On Sunday 21st January four of our Grade 5 students Katie Steele, Alley Rees, Hayley Hacking and Olivia Gard participated in the William Carse Young Performers Award at Ministry of Dance. This event is for cecchetti students studying Grade 5 and above. Students participated in a class and also had to perform an improvisation. Our students loved the experience! Congratulations to Katie Steele who received an Honorable Mention. A new addition to the PSD Family! Welcome to the world Edward Vance Penrose Congratulations Heath and Jane Penrose on the arrival of Edward Vance. He arrived safely on Friday 26th February weighing 7lb 13oz. He is perfect! And we cannot wait to see him, possibly in some little tap shoes very soon!!
