Seal beach Lions club Meetings on the first and third Wednesday of the month at Khoury s Restaurant 110 Marina Drive, Long Beach 7 p.m Lions give gift of sight CATHY NEWTON Director Sixteen Seal Beach Lions and one Seal Beach Leo joined the Santa Ana Lions service project to distribute eyeglasses to needy people through California Lions Friends in Sight (CFLIS) Nov. 10 at Valley High School. While technically a visitation, our purpose was to strengthen the ranks of the Santa Ana club to be able to pull off this massive community event. Lions helped with check in, applications, eye testing, assisting optometrists, eyeglass distribution and eyeglass fitting. While exact numbers are not yet in, estimates are that approximately 400 patients came through the clinic that day. Approximately 370 left with new eyeglasses giving them the gift of sight within a few hours of arriving to the clinic. Volunteers manufactured eyeglasses for another 20 people, 10 people needed no eyeglass correction, optometrists referred four people to specialists and two to the hospital emergency for immediate care. This is a truly rewarding project where one gets to instantly see the results of helping the needy. Additionally, it is quiet inspirational to work alongside the CFLIS core team of Dr. Brian, Dottie, Don, Patti and Rob who do this 30 times a year. These Lions are wonderful to work with and amazing.

President When December hits, Lions get with the spirit right away. A big Thank You goes to all of the Lions who worked the Seal Beach Christmas Parade. Lion Scott and his captains managed to get all umpteen thousandparade entrants down Main Street without incident. Even the horses behaved. I heard that there were about 115 Lions and Leos working and in the parade. What a turn out! I am so sorry I missed it. Being a caterer weekends and holidays are workdays for me. (PS that was not me in the Lion s costume.) Now we have our Christmas tree lot project coming up at Ganahl Lumber. I want to wish Chairman Barbara Wright a speedy recovery from her recent injury. Hopefully her broken bones will heal fast and we will see her soon. Nevertheless, what a trooper. Even thought she was dealing with this she made sure that she covered her chairmanship. Thank you Lion Cub Joan Wilkins for stepping in to cover this project. I am sure you will get lots of support from our Lions. We also will do our annual Breakfast with Santa and the Case Youth Center projects. It s not too late to volunteer with Lion SCOTT NEWTON, first vice president CAMILLE ROMANO, second vice president GRANT NEWTON, third vice president MIKE HALEY, immediate past president Ryan to set up on 12/14 or cook on 12/15. Lion Diana Bean could still use gifts for the 12 kids at Casa. We want to make sure their backpacks are full. November was busy too. Thank you to Lion Chris Langlais for chairing the CSULB Crew Pancake Breakfast. From our Lions working this event, we donated $1500 to the Crew Team. What a job Lion Cathy Newton is doing with our eyeglass program. In our 76-year history, no Lion has done so much to collect and distribute eyeglasses to the needy. The November 10 CLFIS eye screening in Santa Ana was another example of how hard she works on this project. Between collection glasses, reading prescriptions, getting people signed up to work Lion Cathy deserves praise from us all. I also want to thank all the Lions who cooked turkeys for the American Family Housing Thanksgiving dinner. Between Lions and other volunteers, 60 turkeys were donated allowing us to feed 600 hungry guests at the Westminster Community Center on Thanksgiving. I couldn t have done it without your help! A special shout out to Lee and Donna Melody who for the last 32 years have managed to get about frozen turkeys donated that go into gift baskets for some very needy families. We have a great crowd signed up for the Christmas Party at the Petroleum Club on Friday December 21. I am looking forward to sharing a night of fun, good food and entertainment with you all. We also have the red bus available for those not wanting to drive. Stay safe and leave the driving to a sober chauffeur! Lion Camille has all the details. My best to you for the merriest of holidays. May God bless you all. Twenty Seal Beach Lions volunteered to roast turkeys and bring them to the kitchen where more Lions carved them Wednesday night. In addition to the Seal Beach volunteers, Lions from Huntington Beach and District Governor P.J. Smith also cooked and carved turkeys. Lions and volunteers cooked 60 turkeys. On Thanksgiving Day, all the food was transported to the Westminster Community Center where it was warmed and served to 600 people. Lions visit Whittier Lions to support PCC Larry Dicus CAMILLE ROMANO Second Vice President Whittier Lions Club hosted a fundraiser to support Past Council Chair Larry Dicus in his campaign for Lions Club International Director at Steve s BBQ in Whittier. Several Lions including Nikki Illingworth, Neil Gormley, Mike and Marcia Haley, Matti Kline, Scott and Cathy Newton, Camille Romano and Lion President Ellen Liebherr attended, dined on BBQ ribs and chicken and watched some Monday Night Football. The night was full of Lionism and good cheer. Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) held a BBQ for blind Veterans Nov. 17 at the Veterans Affairs Hospital (VA). Seal Beach Lion, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Veterans Service Organization (VSO) and Veteran Affairs (VA) volunteer and Lion Les Shobe escorted blind Veterans from the Blind Center building to the BBQ. Not only did volunteers escort the Veterans, but also took food orders and shuffled the food back to them. However, the most significant point of this event was the pleasure and appreciation exhibited by these blind Veterans. Without escort, they are confined to the Blind Center. Lion Les shares that these Veterans love telling their stories with people who will listen. He says the continuing service to these blind Veterans is very humbling and the individual stories of their military experiences will remain with him forever. New members sign up for club events SCOTT NEWTON First Vice President While guest dined on pizza and salad, Lion Scott Newton conducted a new member orientation Nov. 20. Several people attended including six new Lions, eight prospective Lions and five sponsors and presenters. After a 50-minute Power- Point presentation about Lions Club International, Multiple District 4, District 4L4 and our club, most new members and prospects signed up to work events during the next 30 days.

The dinner was a huge success. Lions see Christmas tree light LINDSAY SAFE Editor Once again, Lions gathered the Saturday after Thanksgiving for the lighting of the Seal Beach Christmas tree. Aside from delivering letters to both male and female Veterans, Leos hosted a Veteran named Roger by wheeling him from the hospital to the event and getting him and other lunch. Leos also met Medal of Honor recipient Tibor Rueben who was at the ceremony. It was a heartwarming experience for the Leos to spend time with Veterans. 5 DECEMBER 2012 THE GR WL Seal Beach Christmas tree lighting 5 Lions refurbish and seek protection for benches LAURA ELLSWORTH Lion Seal Beach Lions began the first bunch of benches in an effort to refurbish the ones on the pier on Nov. 11. City workers moved the benches from the pier to the cement pad at the base of the pier making it much easier to work. Along with Chair Laura Ellsworth, Lions Steve Bowles, Neil Gormley, Nikki Illingworth, Marcella McSorley, Cathy Newton, Grant Newton, Scott Newton, Gina Phillips, Aro Riley, Camille Romano, Dave Schwein, Mark Thomas and Chamber member Brian Warner helped to repair the benches over five different days in November. Lion Laura went to the City Council during public comment to share how de- stroyed the benches were with cuts on all the tops from the fisherman preparing their bait. She informed them that Lions would spend approximately 130 hours refurbishing these benches and wondered if anything will be done to protect the work the Lions are doing or will the benches be destroyed again. After refurbishing 10 of the 18 benches, the projected will be put on hold until the City Council decides what to do to protect the benches. This item is on the January City Council agenda. Meanwhile, Darren from the city said they will no longer be moving the benches from the pier as an employee strained his back in the during the process. Lions will repair the rest of the benches in place with a generator, provided by the city, to use the power equipment.
