This year is already flying by. Perry County was well represented at the district and state level with Record Books. I am so proud of every 4-H er that turned in a Record Book. This may have been the best set ever in Perry County. We had some great books that won in district and Kailey Crocker made it as a finalist for the state level! All of those 4-H ers will be recognized at the District O Rama in Malvern on June 19. We are about a month away from getting baby chicks in for poultry chain, so I hope everyone has their pens ready. Get those Teen Star applications turned in and get ready for the upcoming County O Ramas! We are also taking orders for giant watermelon and giant pumpkins. Those will be going in the ground in a couple of months. It s going to be a fun month Record Book State Finalist Advanced (ages of of January 1) K Crocker O.W.L.S. Awards will be given at District O-Rama. Giant Pumpkin & Watermelon It is time to order giant watermelon and pumpkin seeds. Seed packets will cost $2.00 each. Please let us know by March 30 if you want to participate. We would love to have some pumpkins and watermelons to weigh at the County Fair this year.

2 Contest rules and tip sheets for growing the giant watermelons and pumpkins can be picked up at the Extension office, or ed. Planting date if the weather allows should be around May 14. Teen Stars The Arkansas 4-H Teen Stars Program is a recognition program for Arkansas 4-H members who have outstanding achievement in the areas of 4-H projects and activities, leadership, and community service. Statewide 4-H scholarships are a part of the Arkansas 4-H Teen Star program. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: To be named an Arkansas 4-H Teen Star, a 4-H member: Must be 15 years old as of January 1 of the current year and no more than 18 as of January 1 of the current year. Should have completed two years of work as a 4-H member. Should be an active 4-H member at the time of application. Must submit application on correct form by date indicated. (FY4-H-139 as follows) SELECTION PROCESS: Each applicant will be scored on a standard score sheet. An applicant must receive a score of 80 points or more to be eligible for consideration. The point distribution is as follows: 4-H projects and activities 40 points Leadership and service 50 points Recognition 10 points. APPLICATION: Much of the information needed for completing the Teen Star application can be found in the applicant's 4-H Record Book. To assist in completing the application, most sections are referenced to the Arkansas 4-H Report Form. Applicants should not rely solely on the Arkansas Report Form to complete the application but should find reference to it helpful. Applications are due to the state 4-H office on March 15! EXTRA EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT! CLOVERBUD DAY! This year we will be setting side a day for the Cloverbuds to compete at O-Rama. We are planning to have it in May on a warm day. We will let you know what day, place and time next month. We are looking forward to celebrating our youngest 4-Hers with their own O-Rama Day! O-Rama Event Day 1 Our in-door events will be held on Tuesday, April 10 at Perryville High School beginning at 5:30 p.m. You may only enter each category once. This will include: Talent, Fashion Revue, Public Speaking and Talks/Demonstrations. For ages 9-19 VOCAL may consist of solo, duet, trio, etc. but NO pantomimes will be allowed. Please note that disks or tapes with vocals are allowed but should not overpower the voice of the performer. 4-H ers should be prepared to introduce their number by giving the title of the piece they will perform. 5 minute time limit. INSTRUMENTAL Includes all types of music. No singing or vocals will be allowed with instrumental. Other accompaniment is allowed; however, this must assume the pure character of accompaniment. The test is whether the performance would stand alone if accompaniment were removed. 5 minute time limit. 4-H Poultry Chain Project Baby chicks are scheduled to arrive on April 5. We will keep you updated as we hear if there are any changes. We will notify everyone with an approximate time of arrival. Please bring a box with you to pick up your baby chicks. DANCE All types of dance will be allowed including tap, ballet, square dance, modern, and clogging. Break dancing is allowed, but no acrobatics, gymnastics, or baton twirling. 5 minute time limit.

3 Page 3 of 5 Fashion Revue participants may compete in the following divisions: Constructed Garment Dressy Constructed Garment Casual Purchased Garment - Dressy Purchased Garment - Casual Participants will model and discuss garments to showcase their own style and poise. Methods, Demonstrations and Illustrated Talks Demonstrations and illustrated talks are two of the most effective methods of presenting information. People learn faster and remember longer if they see as well as hear one reason that demonstrations and talks are a vital part of the 4-H program. Method demonstrations and illustrated talks are planned presentations in which one or more 4-H members teach information related to a project or activity. Simply, they are ways of sharing useful information and of showing and telling others how to make or do something. Some of the main differences between a method demonstration and an illustrated talk include: Demonstration A demonstration is doing. A demonstration is showing how. As you show how, you tell how. In a demonstration you make something or do something. There is a finished product. The key to a good demonstration is go and do likewise. Illustrated Talks An illustrated talk is talking. An illustrated talk is telling how with the aid of visuals. In an illustrated talk you use charts, posters, photos, computer programs, slides, pictures, models, cut outs, etc. Ideas can be ed or you can pick them up. Juniors (9-13) are limited to 2-5 minutes Seniors (14-19) are limited to 5-8 minutes Public Speaking Number one fear of most people is public speaking! Learning to be a good public speaker is something that will be useful throughout a 4-H member's lifetime. Good public speakers are made, not born. The necessary skills associated with being a good public speaker have always been an important part of the 4-H experience and 4-H clubs are encouraged to foster a positive, learning-oriented environment for youth regarding this subject. 4-H'ers who participate in Public Speaking can expect to: Develop skills for communicating about real issues to real audiences. Learn how to organize and prepare a speech. Develop speech delivery skills. Learn how to present themselves to others. Develop self confidence Time Limits: 4th Grade 1-3 Minutes * 5th Grade 3-5 Minutes * 6th-8th Grades 3-7 Minutes * 9th-12th Grade 3-7 Minutes O-Rama Event Day 2 Super Foods Saturday! Day will be held on Saturday, April 14 at the Perryville High School at 9:30 a.m. This will include All Foods!(have your demo prepared) For ages 9-19 Poultry BBQ - At County, District and State levels of competition, 4-H ers will BBQ two broiler halves and turn in the one of their choice for judging competition. Broiler halves for competition weigh approximately 1½ pounds each will be provided at the local, District and State activities. Contestants are allowed 1 hour and 30 minutes cooking time. One point for each 5 minutes over the allowed time will be deducted. There is a 30-minute time limit to obtaining your poultry product once the grills are allowed to be lit. 4-H'ers should bring their own grills, sauce, charcoal and, along with other necessary barbecuing items. The same applies to the State activities; however, grills are provided, and 4-H'ers need bring only the other items mentioned above. COMPETITION STARTS AT 9:30 SO BE THERE BEFORE THAT AND READY TO LIGHT THOSE FIRES! District and State activities are sponsored by The Poultry Federation, among other members of the allied industry. Each District winner and a chaperon are provided lodging and a festival ticket to participate in The Poultry Federation activities at the Annual Poultry Festival. State contestants also receive a BBQ grill. State winners will receive plaques and a monetary award. The State Senior winner will represent Arkansas at the National contest held during November at the National 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference held in Louisville, Kentucky. Dairy Recipe This event is sponsored by Arkansas Farm Bureau, Southwest Dairy Museum and Arkansas Dairy Cooperative Association. The contest is divided into two categories Party Ideas and Main Dish.

4 Recipes must contain at least one serving of dairy per serving and must be submitted to Mary Jane before the contest. Deadline to get your recipes in is April 12. We can you the forms and information, or you can stop to pick them up. Competitive topics for the Food Fair include: Fruits & Vegetables, Arkansas Foods (Poultry, Rice, Soybeans, Beef, Dairy, Tomatoes, or Catfish), Breads, Eggs, or Healthy Snacks Participants will share an illustrated talk or method demonstration showing their recipe, use of food in recipe, nutritional value of food, and safety considerations in preparing, serving, and storing food. CRITERIA FOR FOOD FAIR TOPICS Fruits and vegetables Must contribute at least one serving of a fruit or vegetable per recipe serving. A serving is a medium piece of fruit; 1/2 cup cut or cooked fruit or cooked vegetable, 3/4 cup (6 ounces) juice, 1 cup leafy greens, or 1/4 cup dried fruit. A recipe may not include more than 30 percent calories from fat; not more than 10 percent calories from saturated fat; not more than 100 milligrams of cholesterol; and not more than 480 milligrams sodium per serving. Arkansas foods (poultry, rice, soybeans, tomatoes, catfish, beef, dairy). Recipes must contain at least 1/2 cup of rice, soybeans, or tomatoes per serving; 2 ounces cooked or 3 ounces raw beef, poultry or catfish per serving; 1 cup of milk or yogurt or 1 ½ ounces of cheese per serving. Participants should include information on the contributions of their Arkansas food to the state s economy when preparing a presentation in this food topic. Breads Items made of flour and liquid with leavening and additional flavorings and baked. Recipes may be for either quick breads or yeast breads. RECIPES INVOLVING THE USE OF PURCHASED mixes will be disqualified! Eggs To be considered an egg dish, a recipe must: Include a minimum of: One-half egg per serving if an appetizer or snack; One-half egg per serving if a dessert; One egg per serving if a main dish. (Note: Numbers above represent eggs to be broken; use of the entire egg is not required. For example, a dessert serving six may be made from three egg whites.) Recipes containing uncooked eggs in the finished product are not acceptable (food safety). Healthy Snacks A recipe may not include more than 30 percent calories from fat; not more than 10 percent calories from saturated fat; not more than 100 milligrams of cholesterol; and not more than 480 milligrams sodium per serving. This category includes any food that can be used as an appetizer or betweenmeal snacks. O-Rama Event Day 3 Big B Day! Day will be held on Thursday, May 3 at the Perry County Extension Office beginning at 5:30 p.m. For ages 9-19 Baitcasting The activities associated with the 4-H Baitcasting conteset are designed to generate an interest in fishing and give participants an opportunity to display their casting skill. By testing the participant s skills at casting with a rod and reel, we can encourage improved accuracy and enjoyment through improved skills. Gun Safety and Gun Marksmanship This activity will consist of parts: A general gun safety session where these topics will be discussed: Gun safety rules -- Safe handling and care of guns -- The four basic shooting positions -- and Shooting range procedure; and a brief written examination. DO NOT BRING A GUN. ONE WILL BE PROVIDED FOR YOU! Bicycle - Participants will have an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of the bicycle and the rules associated with its operation as well as demonstrate their skills in bicycle riding. Safety will be stressed throughout the contest. The use of bicycle safety helmets is required while at any site used for the overall event. This contest will include (time limits as shown): A. Written examination - 20 multiple choice and true-false questions taken from the 4-H curriculum. (15 minutes) B. Parts Identification - Identify 10 parts in five minutes (5 minutes) C. Skill Riding courses we will choose from for Regional and State events: a. Double obstacle test b. Double zigzag obstacle test c. City Streets i. 4-Way Intersection ii. Railroad Crossing iii. Scanning d. Figure eight steering Contestants will wear properly fitted Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) or SNELL approved bicycle helmets whenever they are riding a bicycle in the contest area and on the grounds of the event site. Contestants MUST bring their own bicycles and helmets for use in this event.
