Christmas is a very special day because that is when Christians celebrate the day when Jesus was born. In December many people put up a Christmas tree with the family and decorate it beautifully.

Surprises from Santa always put a big smile on our faces. Christmas is a great day for a celebration! Funday? Lamar Cooley I ve experienced many different things at many schools.

Christmas is the best day of the year for many people. It is the time of year when you spend time with your families, bake special treats, open gifts and give thanks. Christmas is a very special day because that is when Christians celebrate the day when Jesus was born. In December many people put up a Christmas tree with the family and decorate it beautifully. Kids get a long break from school and pray for snow. The day before Christmas, or as most people call it, Christmas Eve, is when people do their last minute shopping. Surprises from Santa always put a big smile on our faces. Christmas is a great day for a celebration! Funday? Lamar Cooley I ve experienced many different things at many schools. For example, Edgewood Primary school was a nice but strict school. Once I was playing tag with one of my friends and I tripped and tackled him by accident. He lay there on the concrete crying. When the teachers came over he told them I purposely tackled him. His name was Cameron, and after that incident he was sent to the nurse. Two days went by and Cameron finally got back from being absent. He said that he had to go to the hospital because his arm was broken. Then during the last few minutes of computer class the principal and my teacher called me out the room. They said they had decided that instead of suspending me I had to miss Funday. Instead of running around having fun and eating snow cones, I had to sit in the library next to the playground and write until the school day was over. There was a big, long window in the library so I had to watch everyone having fun. I also had to do Cameron s work for him and be his partner in everything. What an anti-funday. Naughty or Nice? This is the third year the Art Club has constructed delicious sweet architecture and just as I imagined, the holiday spirit would arrive with sparkle when I delivered them downtown on November 11th.

2 Woody Times page 2 Gingerbread Houses On Display Mr. Pascuzzi At home and school, I love traditions, those moments of celebration and ritual that we can look forward to every year! One of my favorite traditions at school is making gingerbread houses with the Art Club, which is on display until January 7th at PPG Place, downtown. This is the third year the Art Club has constructed delicious sweet architecture and just as I imagined, the holiday spirit would arrive with sparkle when I delivered them downtown on November 11th. I know that sounds early, considering my Halloween costume isn t put away yet, but I am not as bad as Wal-Mart, who crams pre-lit trees next to jack o lanterns, next to clearance patio furniture as soon as the last week of September, when all of the back to school twenty cent notebooks are sold out. Truly the holiday season magic hits me when I take the Art Club down to see the display along with a night exploring the Wintergarden, ice skating and dinner in the city. Students and teachers alike, we are excited to see all the gingerbread houses from the Pittsburgh area and find our own creations in the mix. If you have not gone down to PPG to see the Wintergarden and Gingerbread House display before, please make it one of your destinations this holiday season! Woodland Hills Jr High Boys Basketball by Qu raun Smith The first day of basketball practice we met Coach Lewis, a great and very confident coach who teaches us a lot about basketball. We started our first day of conditioning in November which was mostly layups and drills like dribbling, shooting, and basketball footwork. During every practice, we jog around the court for at least five minutes and then do the pushups. Our tryouts began on November eighteenth and ended by having some boys cut and the rest made the team. We now have one Junior High team that is made up of seventh and eighth graders including those at the Academy. We now have approximately 25 boys who made the team. Coach Lewis coaches the eighth graders and Coach Donnelly takes on the seventh graders. Our first game is on January 6, Two of our biggest rivals are Penn Hills and Gateway. Holiday Winter 2011-12 page 3 HEALTH NEWS Ms. Bodie For the past few months, Nurse Matelan has had three student nurses learning the daily operation of a school health center.

All three young women are working toward earning their BSN, Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Their internship at the Junior High is one of the clinical phases in obtaining their degree.

Christina Bokor graduated from Penn State with a degree in Public Health and began a job working with nurses. She then went to the Shadyside School of Nursing and became a registered nurse.

3 Holiday Winter page 3 HEALTH NEWS Ms. Bodie For the past few months, Nurse Matelan has had three student nurses learning the daily operation of a school health center. They charted heights, weights, and gave vision exams. They helped to take care of sick children and handle emergencies. All three young women are working toward earning their BSN, Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Their internship at the Junior High is one of the clinical phases in obtaining their degree. Katie Karaffa, a Penn Hills graduate, is a senior nursing student at Pitt. After graduation, she would like to move south and specialize in pediatrics. Christina Bokor graduated from Penn State with a degree in Public Health and began a job working with nurses. She then went to the Shadyside School of Nursing and became a registered nurse. She is a nurse at Children s Hospital in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and is working toward her BSN at Chatham University. Christobel Graven is a registered nurse at Shadyside Hospital in the orthopedic department taking care of patients with broken bones and joint replacements. She also is attending Chatham University. Nurse Matelan would like to encourage any student, male or female, to consider nursing as a career. They will always have a job and everyday will be challenging and special.

Today we are going to review NEW SUPER MARIO BROS. Wii. Alot of history is imbedded in the franchise, from saving a damsel from a big ape to dodging high speed turtle shells on cars. The Mario Brothers have a rich and wonderful history! JOKES What is the best Christmas present in the world? A broken drum, you can t beat it! What do you get if you eat Christmas decorations? Tinselitus. What do snowmen eat for breakfast? Frosted flakes. What do snowmen where on their heads? Ice caps. How do snowmen get around? They ride an icicle. GAMEPLAY The gameplay is solid but things are sensitive like the bubble button. When your thumb is on the side of the button, the character will go in the bubble. (bubble button is the A button) and another annoyance is that when all the players use the bubble button it s a loss because no one can free them. But the game is just as great even with the coward bubble and as for the controllers themselves you can use the wiimote and nunchuck and lastly the classic controller. I found the wiimote alone to be the best due to its nostalgic feeling from old games, plus it s easier to use because of its new control style. Who is this character? STORY As you know the story is the EXACT SAME ONE and I for one am tired of it. I mean, in every Mario game some girl gets kidnapped and he has to go get her from a crazy mutated turtle and a bunch of mutated mushroom things with fangs!! You could count the sports games but, let s get real people no one counts sport games anymore. VERDICT The New Super Mario Wii gets an 8 out of 10! SEE YOU NEXT TIME WHEN WE WILL REVIEW SLY COOPER HONER AMONG THIEVES!!

Usher s Confessions and Beyonce s Baby Boy were two great songs that everyone grooved to. Lately, though, many kids have stopped listening to them and moved onto other artists.

Beyonce was born September 4, 1981, and began a music career in the 1990 s and has evolved as an R&B/pop artist. She is also an actress and a fashion designer.

7 Woody Times page 7 Usher and Beyonce by Amy Narveaz I grew up listening to Usher and Beyonce. I loved their music since I first heard it years ago. They really do not put out many albums anymore; but, they still are two of my favorite artists. They used to put out many albums and became famous for those songs and the music videos. Usher s Confessions and Beyonce s Baby Boy were two great songs that everyone grooved to. Lately, though, many kids have stopped listening to them and moved onto other artists. It seems like Nikki Manja, T Pain, and New Boys are the new hot singers. Maybe they are talented, but they just do not have the staying power of Usher and Beyonce. Beyonce has won music awards as well as earning two Golden Globe nominations. Today, she is married to Jay Z and expecting her first child. Usher was born on October 14, 1978, and also rose to fame in the 1990 s. Many consider him to be the king of R&B. He has won 73 awards and had 116 nominations. Today he is divorced and has two sons. Let s not forget about these two great stars just because there are some new stars on the horizon. Many people have stopped listening to them and moved on to the latest flavor of the month. Let s remember Usher and Beyone who are still around making great music because they have great talent. They are the ones who have inspired many of these new artists and why i still listen to them today. Corn Soup By Noah Thiem Corn soup is an African food that I really enjoy. I first tasted it for my birthday dinner when I was young. It is not that hard to make but it will take at least an hour. Food Ingredients: 1 bag frozen corn Ethiopian Berebere (spice) 8 slices Velveeta cheese or American cheese 5 cups whole milk 1/3 cup Olive oil 1/8 cup flour Blend the flour and olive oil in sauce pan. Using a whisk add the milk. Cook over medium heat, stirring often by whisk, until mixture thickens or comes to a boil. Add American or Velveeta cheese (to taste). Stir until melted. Add frozen corn. Heat up until the corn is hot. Add 1 teaspoon of the Ethiopian Berebere, more if you like spice, less if not. Add salt and pepper (to taste). JARED'S FUN FACTS THE GREAT PUMPKIN TREE Have you ever seen a pumpkin tree? If not, that s ok because there are only two in the world and they are both in Iowa. How is this possible? A pumpkin root grew under a tree and worked its way up to the top and started to grow a pumpkin. The first one grew from an oak tree and the second one came from a pear tree. The pear tree pumpkin was first spotted on a farm on Labor Day by Phil and Janelle Lovely. The oak tree pumpkin was not found until it was full grown and twelve feet in the air. Previously, this was an ordinary oak tree growing in a family s front yard. Who knows, maybe there will be more pumpkins growing in trees next year.

Woody Times page 8 THE THEATRE HALL Rhett Spadacene Hello! I am Rhett Spadacene. You may know me from the Gaming Corner, but today we are on a different segment called The Theatre Hall.

I say, Long live The Simpsons!! There were some amazing moments in this great show. In the beginning, it seemed like an out of place show but it grew into classic comedy.

Another funny episode was when Bart and Millhouse play a haunted board game called Satan s Pass and the town of Springfield turns into different board games.

8 Woody Times page 8 THE THEATRE HALL Rhett Spadacene Hello! I am Rhett Spadacene. You may know me from the Gaming Corner, but today we are on a different segment called The Theatre Hall. We are going to take a look at The Simpsons. It seems that the Simpsons are going to go away later this year in their twenty third season. I, for one, hope that is not true, but we will have to see. I say, Long live The Simpsons!! There were some amazing moments in this great show. In the beginning, it seemed like an out of place show but it grew into classic comedy. One example is when the whole Simpson family goes on a game show just because their house had termites. Another funny episode was when Bart and Millhouse play a haunted board game called Satan s Pass and the town of Springfield turns into different board games. Bart and Millhouse have to get the town back to normal. I also saw photos of a Seven- Eleven convenience store impersonating the Kwike-Mart from the show! Sadly, as Homer says, nothing lasts forever. But we can hope that the writers keep coming up with more hilarious episodes. If not, it will live on in reruns. maze by T. Wilbur Want to write for Woody Times?
