1 Pirate Map X Marks the Story Winter Edition 2015 Senior Night By Kaelyn Church Senior Night at Cedarville High School was held Friday, November 6th. Senior Night is held at the last home football game of the season. Before the game, all seniors who participated in either band, football or cheerleading lined up with their parents on the field for a special recognition. When asked about what emotions she was experiencing that night, Kaycee Maxwell said she was feeling happy that I am one step closer towards graduation but also very sad knowing that this would be the last time I would get to cheer for our boys on our home field. Many other seniors who were questioned stated they were experiencing mixed emotions of both happiness and sadness. The seniors were also asked what it felt like playing in, marching at, or cheering in their last home football game; many seniors such as Caleb Richards and Brittany Harms said it felt great! Others said it was a sad but happy event that will always hold a place in their hearts. Additionally, those involved were asked what they were going to miss most about those Friday night lights. Shawn Brandenburg said, I am going to miss everything about those Friday night lights. Packing up everything, always forgetting something, not to mention all of the AMAZING excursion rides to all the away games. But what I will probably miss the most is talking about life with Coach Remer, Dean Lea, Jason Swaim, and Dillon Hancock. Everything, was Shawn Rowton s response to what he was going to miss most.

2 Senior Spotlight: By Devyn Ruiz Bailie Murphy, a member of the 2016 senior class, has nothing but determination and optimism for her future. Bailie is involved in several extracurricular activities including the following: president of Youth Alive and FBLA, vice president of EAST, secretary of Student Council and the Senior Class, a member of science club, Beta Club, college project, and the Cedarville Lady Pirate basketball and track teams. Bailie is also a member of the Fine Arts team at Cedarville First Assembly. She enjoys performing and ministering to people. She plans to attend the University of Arkansas Fayetteville to pursue a career in business after high school. Being a senior is exciting because I am finally finishing what I have worked so long for. However, it is also a very stressful time because I am having to make life decisions, stated Bailie. Senior Spotlight continued... The part that Bailie will miss the most about high school is the family aspect. After growing up with familiar faces in school and in basketball most of her life, she is going to miss the family bond that has grown between her and her classmates. She looks forward to forming new relationships in the future. I would change absolutely nothing about my high school experience, responded Bailie, My experiences in high school, whether good or bad, are a part of who I am and have helped shape my character. High School Basketball By Ariona Hopewell Tuesday's basketball game started at 5:30 p.m. with the girls Junior Varsity (JV). The girls played well and stayed in the lead throughout the entirety of the game. With 13 minutes left, Waldron finally made their first point. After the JV girls, the Varsity girls came onto the court pumped with energy. Bailie Murphy started the game off by jumping up and hitting the ball giving the Lady Pirates possession. Morgan Williams had the first free throws but missed both shots. The second free throws were made by Bailie Murphy, who made both shots. The girls kept working hard throughout the entire game. At the end of the first quarter, the score was 4 3 with the Lady Pirates in the lead. Second quarter finished with the Lady Pirates in the lead, The end of third quarter the score was The varsity girls game came to an end with the score of The Lady Pirates won the game moving them to a 3 0 record! Our girls worked as a team and showed good sportsmanship. Next up were the varsity boys starting at 7:37 p.m. Waldron was first to score in the first quarter of the game. Towards the end of the first quarter Dylan Mason scored 2 points

3 CHS Art By Anna Rice Many students at Cedarville High School participate in art. Art gives people the chance to express their own style through their work. Art can be viewed and expressed in many different ways. Art has been around for a very long time. There are works of art all around the world. Cierra Mcafee has been interested in art since she was about six. She is one of the many students who are involved in art at our school. Cierra is interested in Graphic Design. According to the website Treefrog, Graphic Design is a visual communication and the aesthetic expression of concepts and ideas using various graphic elements and tools. Cierra plans to use Graphic Design in her future. There are many exceptional artists throughout history. When asked if Cierra had a favorite artist she replied, I love Salvador Dali, who is an illusionist as well as an artist. I love how his art is based on dreams and wishful thinking. Also, I do like realistic art. She stated she has won some contests and awards: CHS Art continued A few for the Crawford County Downey phone book. In another competition I entered a Zentangle and was rewarded a flag that was flown in my honor for the most likes on it. I've also received art awards; several in elementary and middle school, and 2 for highest GPA in High School. Hint: I am a teacher who was born in Siloam Springs but moved to Fort Smith CHS Basketball continued... with free throws. First quarter ended with a score of 7 12 with Waldron in the lead. In the second quarter, our boys started to catch up with 4 minutes on the board with a score of The score was 16 28, Waldron still in the lead by the time half time got around. Third quarter ended with the score of The final score of the game was leaving Waldron the winning score.

4 Foreign Exchange Student By Shawn Brandenburg With the arrival of a new school year, everyone is excited to see old friends and the friendly new faces of the foreign exchange students. When Raphael Bassani left his home country of Brazil for Cedarville, he was not worried about the transition to American life. Well the transition wasn't so hard, because we were familiarized with your culture by seeing movies and series from there, but it all was interesting and curious to have the chance to live in a movie and know the real culture in the real place that's here and not just movies. Cedarville s staff and students welcome foreign exchange students with amazing respect. Everybody received me very well, they introduced themselves and showed me everything, said Raphael. He described Cedarville as being a very organized school with a lot of equipment and technology to help the study. Youth Alive By Cameron Brown What is Youth Alive? Youth Alive is a student led organization that focuses on sharing the word of God. Students get together once a week and have guest speakers attend to give a message from the Bible. Elizabeth Cox says, Youth Alive allows us to talk freely about the Lord and what He has done for us and how great He is. Devyn Ruiz s favorite part of Youth Alive is how we can share our love for Jesus throughout the school. Amanda Atwell is in her second year as a sponsor for Youth Alive. When asked what her favorite part about Youth Alive is, she responded by saying, Seeing Christ in students. Seeing that there are lights and good in them, that there are kids for the other kids to look up to. Mrs. Atwell has inspired multiple students with her story and by being a comforter and a light for them. Devyn Ruiz stated, IF I were to become a teacher, I would Youth Alive continued DEFINITELY become a sponsor for Youth Alive. Every Wednesday in Mrs. Bergenstock room is when Youth Alive meets; sometimes they have guest speakers come in from the area churches, and other times they fellowship together and share. Youth Alive Fun Day is an event that all Youth Alive paid members get to attend. Shelby Skinner says that it is a life changing event that always leaves me wanting more of God. Although the point of the trip is to lead people to Christ, many students have fun during game time. Devyn Ruiz says We used socks filled with flour for the capture the flag game...that was interesting.

5 Senior Spotlight By Whitney Fears One of this year's senior boys is Gabe Austin, Gabe is included in football and weightlifting. Some achievements he is proud of are being selected to go to boys state, being on the honor roll, placing 2nd in the 220lbs weight class at the 2015 weightlifting competition in Alma, winning the Iron Pirate Award, and making it to playoffs in football his senior year. Some of Gabe's hobby s are art and football. When asked if he had any advice for the grades below him. He responded, do not do drugs strive for education. He also said some of the most memorable moments of his high school career would be Friday Night Lights, pep rallies, basketball games, and coach Remer's wise words. When asked what he would miss most about high school, he said, My coaches, friends, and everyone that makes Cedarville whole. When asked if there was anything about himself he would like you to know, he responded, I LOVE EVERYBODY ESPECIALLY MY BUTTERS. Senioritis By Ariona Hopewell What is senioritis? It is a crippling disease that strikes high school seniors. The symptoms includes laziness, over excessive wearing of sweats, old t shirts, basketball shorts, and whatever else that s loose and comfortable. This also includes lack of studying, repeated absences, and generally dismissive attitude. This is proven by the urban dictionary: Everyone knows the internet is always true.:) Some seniors catch senioritis but others are lucky enough not to.shawn Brandenburg replies, No do not have senioritis, I have mono. Well, looks like senioritis is not the only thing going around this year. Hint : One of my siblings has goats, chickens, and rabbits. Senioritis continued... Many students wish to be seniors, but they just don t really know the outcome of it all. I am not too entirely sure what senioritis consists of. I just know I am sick and tired of all this highschool stuff and I am more than ready to graduate. says Jade Flippin, senior for the class of Some people just have it every now and then, depending on the day. Brittany Harms comments It comes and goes when it wants to. Illnesses don t have a certain day or season; they just come and go as they please. Anna Rice said, Senioritis has really hit me this year. Towards the beginning of the year I failed to notice its occurrence but as the year progresses I have found myself slacking. As graduation approaches my senioritis becomes stronger. Senioritis has hit hard this year on some of the seniors. One of the few, Maria Crabtree states that she does not have senioritis. Seniors everyday are starting to slack in class and become lazier than before. The only cure for this illness is a phenomenon known as Graduation. The days are counting down only 5 or so months left to go. Just stick in there seniors. Y all got this!

6 Football Homecoming 2015 By Shelby Skinner Cedarville Pirate homecoming was October the ninth. The junior high maids consisted of two seventh grade, two eighth grade, and four ninth grade maids. The seventh grade maids were Cheyenne Adams and Audrey Gathright. The eighth grade maids were Rylee Merechka and Katie Oden. The four ninth grade maids were Madison Murray, Andrea Lee, Lainie Stockton, and Whittnie Hernandez. The Senior high maids consisted of tenth graders Paigeriana Skinner and Mikayla Oden, eleventh graders Raylee Johnson and Cierra Henry, and the four seniors Morgan Williams, Sierra Odom, Baillie Murphy, and Madison Armer. On October seventh students at Cedarville High School voted for the 2015 football homecoming princess and queen. Students in grades seven through nine voted for the princess, and students in grades ten through twelve voted for the queen. The students elected Andrea Lee as the 2015 football homecoming princess and Morgan Williams as the homecoming Queen. Andrea was escorted by Abraham Hernandez and Morgan was escorted by her future father in law. Morgan said, When they announced Andreas name, I was so happy for her that it brought tears to my eyes! I was so shocked that we won!! That was the first year that sisters have won together!! I loved being able to enjoy that evening with my sister!! Teacher Spotlight By Makayla Jones Mr. Klein is a new teacher here at Cedarville High School. He is currently teaching pre calculus/trigonometry, Algebra II, Algebra III, and calculus. Mr. Klein chose math because it is essential to other subjects. Mr. Klein has been married for twelve years and has three daughters, ages eleven, eight, and three. He is the eighth child of his mother who had nine children. Eight is my lucky number, Mr. Klein mentioned. He went to the University of Arkansas Fort Smith. He decided to be a teacher when he realized how important the profession is. Teacher Spotlight continued... The person who inspired him to teach is Dr. Donald R. Hubbard, a teacher and preacher. Mr. Klein is asked a variety of questions each and every day. One of the main questions he is asked is, What s the difference between this school and where you have taught before? The demographics and socioeconomics are vastly different. Strong Huttig is a much poorer community that is more remote than Cedarville. Mr. Klein said he learned something in high school that he likes to share with his classes: I learned that true friends are made or broken in high school. I learned in high school to be kind because you don t ever know the battle someone might be facing in silence. Four of my acquaintances died in high school. Mr. Klein is not just a math teacher he is also a great person to talk to. If you need any kind of help, he is there with a helping hand. Most teachers are just here to educate you and make sure you learn, but this teacher isn t just that, he is your friend. 7 Treasure Hunt!!! The journalism team has decided to have a treasure hunt. The hints are within the newspaper articles. Each time a new paper is issued, a new treasure hunt will start. When you find the X that marks the spot, the treasure hunt will end. Take the treasure to Mrs. Brown, and you will receive a PRIZE!!
