1 Florida Good Sam Club Organization Officers Website: Director: Secretary: Treasurer Wagonmaster: Webmaster Rob & June Malonson Greeted on October 7th Bob Ward Mary Murray Linda Voyton Robin Murphy Jill Campbell President: GO-SEE-UM SAMS Newsletter Editor: Go-See-Ums Officers Website: President: Vice President: Secretary: Treasurer: Wagonmaster: Sunshine Chairman: Webmaster Editor: Volume 10 October, 2011 Issue 2 Rob Malonson Bill Ruester Jackie Ringley Bob Lindsay Leo Reuss Chere Ruester Richard DuPont June Malonson A Word From Our President --Good Sam Days As you can see from the photos, the Go-See-Ums participated in Good Sam Days at Camping World. While Camping World has held Good Sam Weekend previously this is the first year that both organizations are under the same corporate ownership. This is bringing some interesting changes to the membership procedures of both organizations. While the process is still evolving, what I know at this time is Good Sam Life members now have the same discount privileges as Camping World Presidents Club members, standard Good Sam members received Presidents club pricing during Good Sam Days and will be offered special deals in the future. I have also been told that store management feels that each store may get more involved with the chapters in their store area. As the Go-See-Ums are based in Fort Myers and they already know of us at the Fort Myers store, having donated our Good Sam T-Shirts last May, this could be a great future asset. More to come on that front as I learn more from the store management. Lastly a great big THANK YOU to those who volunteered their time to represent us all at Good Sam Days. Aren't they just stale bread to begin with????? From Our Kitchens To You by: June Malonson New England Grapenut Custard Pudding It has been brought to my attention that a lot of the Go-See- Ums have never had the pleasure of eating Grapenut Custard Pudding This travesty cannot continue. If you have never tried one of our recipes, by all means, try this one. You won t regret it. New England GRAPENUT CUSTARD PUDDING by: June Malonson Small batch Large batch 4 eggs 6 eggs ½ to 1 c. sugar to taste 1 cup sugar 1 c. Grapenuts Cereal (not flakes) 1 ½ cup of grapenuts 4 c. milk, scalded 6 eggs 1 tsp. Vanilla 1 tsp. vanilla 1 speck salt 1 speck salt 1 tsp nutmeg (optional) 1 tsp nutmeg (optional) 2 qt, baking dish 4 qt. Baking dish Bake for 45 min 60 min. 60 min to 1 ½ hr. Pre-heat oven to 350 o Mix well: the eggs, sugar, grapenuts, salt and scalded milk. Butter a 2 quart glass baking dish (flat bottom works best). Add custard mixture. Place this dish into a large roasting pan with water. Adjust water level in roasting pan to come to level of custard. Bake at 350 o degrees for approximately 1 hour Check after 45 minutes, When sterling knife comes out clean, pudding is done. (You can use a regular knife but, a small amount of custard can stick to knife, if inside not runny and custard on knife is minimal it is done). Carefully remove from oven and water; let custard come to room temperature, place in refrigerator until cold. Some like it warm; either way is great. Whipped Cream optional but recommended YUM!! Notes: Bean Bag Baseball It was a lively game last month. The laughing and cheering could be heard a mile away. It was a fight to the finish but:... 4 Sunshine Corner Sunshine Chairperson, Chere Ruester Ken Long: Ken was hit by a backing auto while parked at a gas pump at BJ's. Ken fractured the bone just below the hip. A rod was put in and after a two week rehab he will be released to home provided all goes well. He is in rehab at the Lee Memorial Rehab Center (right next to the hospital ) and is in room 615-A. Lois reports he is out of his room in the various therapies from 7 AM to 4 PM with a break, of course for lunch. Lois suggests that visits not be made until after 4 PM Monday thru Friday. Visits can be made during the day as well. Please keep both Ken and Lois in your thoughts and prayers; cards would be appreciated, He looks on our group as his family so let's respond. Ken Burson: tripped over his oxygen hose and fell smack on his nose. No serious damage; just to his dignity. Hope you are feeling ok now, Ken. Bob Millard: Nancy Millard has informed us that she took Bob to the Emergency Room where they determined he had a plum-sized tumor on his brain. Since the hospital was not equipped to handle such problems, Bob was transferred to Beth Israel hospital in Boston, MA. There a biopsy was done that determined the tumor was a metastasized lymphoma (remember Bob has been treated for non-hodgkin s lymphoma), and Nancy and Bob have been told that the tumor can be eradicated by a strenuous program of chemotherapy. Right now Bob is doing better but extremely weak and he must gain strength before they can begin that therapy. Nancy took him home and he will be going in for chemo treatment number 2 soon. Jean DuPont: has fallen and fractured her arm. She also has sutures in her right hand. We don t have to many particulars other than to say she fell. You know Rich -- a man of few words. We send our best, and hope Jean is feeling better soon. Cathy Lindsay: is still making a decision as to her Chemo. Therapy. More to follow. June Malonson: had hand surgery on the 10 th of October, to release trigger fingers on her right hand. At the moment I am using the hunt and peck system to publish the newsletter; please pardon any typos. I am feeling better and relieved it wasn t Psoriatic Arthritis after all. June will have surgery on the left hand on the 24 th of October. Please keep these folks in your thoughts and prayers. Noteworthy Past members, Dave and Nancy Bertsch surprised us with a visit at the Rally. It was like old times having them at our meals and playing games afterwards. We were all so glad to see them. Come back soon Dave and Nancy. You are missed. tabs (that's a big brown outdoor trash sack pretty full!!!!), 6 crocheted baby blankets and 10 preemie baby beanies. The staff saw them coming and stood at the open door to welcome & thank them for the generous donations. Linda Reuss said, Leo and I want to personally thank you for continuing to collect all those tabs - we are receiving more and more as families and friends of our members pitch in to help the cause as well. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. The McDonald House staff also said they are down on the blankets, hats, booties, etc that they give to departing families. With the snowbirds gone they have received very few but the use of the house hadn't declined. Please help there too if you can. Again, heartfelt, sincere thanks. Leo & Linda A Friend of mine sent me this article. It is pretty kool. I can t wait to try it. Seal Plastic Bags with Old Bottle Caps Cut up a disposable water bottle and keep the neck and top, (see photo). Insert the plastic bag through the neck and screw the top to seal. I bet you could use those coke can tops that don t fit the new style cans (if I hadn t just tossed them out, oh well): looks like this would work great. Well it has been an eventful month. Those of us who donated our time to Camping World had a good time chatting with potential campers. They had candy too yum? Will you volunteer next time??? And don t forget the Yard Sale. A lot of us have been stockpiling stuff to sell at the Sale. Come and join the fun. Hope you enjoy this issue. I had a fun publishing it See you next month Rob and June 30 Leo & Linda Reuss: have notified me that: On Saturday, Oct. 15th, Leo and Linda stopped by the Ronald McDonald House at Health Park and dropped off nearly 50 POUNDS of can Go-See-Um Sams Newsletter, October, 2011 Page 4
