2 A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT, SHELIA ROBERTSON Hello Ladies I hope everyone has had a wonderful summer. There have been vacations, family visiting, sewing, and let s not forget the gardens. You bring whatever you want to sew on and bring a brown bag lunch on Wednesday. We have scheduled two SURPRISE projects for the weekend. Last minute scheduling so don t worry about supplies. Just make sure you bring yourself and your machine. Fun!! The guild meeting on Saturday will be a short one so that we can finish all those UFO s that we brought. Bring your ideas for the future. This is our guild and we all have a voice. Love and happy quilting till we see each other again, Shelia SEW-IN INFORMATION Saturday, August 10, 11, 12 & 13 8 AM till 4 PM Mt. 4 FRIENDSHIP QUILTERS MINUTES JULY 9, 2016 Shelia Robertson called the meeting to order, Irene Dison opened with prayer, and the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag was recited. Naomi Kircus gave a devotional on Sustaining Strength based on Psalm 55:22. Everyone was urged to remember Gaye Austin who had fallen and shattered her left wrist. Since the quilt show had taken place on the second Saturday of June, there was no meeting or minutes. Sarah Childress did not have a Treasurer s Report, as she had not received the past month s bank statement. She did give figures for the quilt show income and expenses. Jill Dailey gave info for a quilt show on July 22 and 23 at Cahaba Springs Presbyterian Church in Trussville. Shelia then asked for feed-back on the quilt show. It was recommended that while it was fresh on everyone s mind that they write down suggestions or comments on how to make the next show better (whoever makes these does not have to put their name on them). Also each person or committee should write out instructions on how they did their job for future reference. All of this should be ed to Jackie White for the newsletter, and Beth Staples will keep up with all the notes. Martelli, a vendor at the show, had sent a table to the guild to use or give away. Shelia asked for suggestions as to how to best and most fairly do this. After some discussion, it was decided there would be a live auction for the table on Saturday, August 13, around 10:30 or immediately following the short business meeting. Those guild members who had worked on the quilt show in any way would be able to place bids. If someone could not attend, they could send a bid. It was also suggested that proceeds be used to help with food at some of the sew-ins. Donna Nicholson made a motion that some of the proceeds from the quilt show be used to help pay for the storage unit the guild rents for quilt show equipment. Motion was seconded by Celicia Burke, and approved by all. Naomi Kircus said she and her husband had put out signs pointing to the show and 3 of them had been removed early in the day. She also reported door prizes had been given away. Shelia gave a report on what the vendors had paid Pell City in sales tax, and she also told who had won ribbons at the show. Moriah Baptist Church. The first day everyone should bring a sack lunch, and then lunches will be determined for the other days. This will be mainly UFO projects. Bring fat quarters for dice game on Saturday. Jackie White made a motion that the guild donate $200 to Mt. Moriah for letting us use of their building. Mary Casey seconded the motion, and all approved. Pam Burgess showed the next block of the month. Birthday presents were given out, door prizes were won by Sally Day and Jackie White, and June and July fat quarters were won by Naomi Kircus and Mary Casey. Meeting was dismissed and followed by a fun game of QUILTO (Bingo in quilt terms). 6 COMMENTS ON QUILT SHOW JUNE, 2016 There was a wonderful variety of beautiful quilted items in a good layout. I felt like everyone who came was pleased. It would be impossible to list all the positive comments and thoughts. I kept notes during the day in order to share thoughts I had during the day, or things others suggested to me. There was a report that vendors were letting extra people in the back door. I didn t hear how this was addressed and how it can be prevented from happening next time. Are vendors allowed a certain number of passes? Do vendors get viewers choice tickets? Smaller opportunity quilt tickets wouldn t have to be cut. A visitor asked me about contact information. Should it be in the brochure? I didn t remember to bring home a brochure and don t remember its contents. Many who came by the opportunity quilt table didn t realize there was a vendor venue. There was some confusion by people who came by the opportunity quilt table whether they had to be present to win a door prize. My understanding was that one DID have to be present to win the door prize, but DID NOT have to be present to win the opportunity quilt. Some people were confused. Was there an arrangement for folks who may need to leave and then return? Stamp on hand or something? Separate jars with OPPORTUNITY QUILT and VIEWER S CHOICE in large letters. Many visitors wanted to put their viewer s choice vote in the container with opportunity tickets, and we d have to dig them out. What about a label for the opportunity quilt? With name of pattern and other info. I was asked the pattern name, but I didn t know or remember. When door prizes are announced, can additional announcement be made reminding guests to vote for viewers choice quilt, to purchase opportunity quilt tickets, and to visit the vendors in the next room? Were the categories and winners listed anywhere? What about a one-page flyer when folks pay? It could give more information on vendors area, opportunity quilt, viewer s choice, bed turning times, special events, categories and winners, etc. It was an excellent show! Thanks for letting me help, LuAnn Jill s Ideas: Set-up quilt pipes and drapes in a zigzag pattern (more space?) 2-part form for entrants fill out like Blount County and that is folded in half and hung for judging. The category and quilt number are at the bottom and left showing. Right before the show they are opened back up and repined. Clamps with ring on top to hang on cross poles at the top of quilt so it does not need a sleeve. (called threshold ring curtain clops available at Target and Home Depot) Door prize everyone gets a ticket - go to guild table to redeem bag with 200 tags/cards with sad faces and the number of a door prize. (have smiley faces) They pull a tag out of the bag, if they don t get a smiley face they can choose a consolation prize from the table free patterns, measuring tapes, pens, etc. Silent auction for some gift baskets or other items
7 Get info out to national vendors asking for door prizes, Sulky, P & B Textiles will provide materials, Quilters Dream, batting samples Category signs with category number bordered with colored pages hung at beginning of category Quilt receipt each category on a chair or a spot on floor Best of Show and Judge s Choice Jackie s Idea: Have more than one judge. Work on problem with receiving quilts for the show. Need MORE space for country store, have at entrance of quilt show vendor area. Use only quilt/sewing vendors. Vendors pay more Everyone always loves the bed turning. Do it again! If you have any ideas/thoughts write them down and give to Beth. If you attend any quilt shows this year and see a good idea, write it down. We are keeping these so that the next show in 2018 will be the best one ever! WE CAN DO IT!
