2 2 Trivia Whiz The Amazing Brain With its billions of cells and trillions of connections, the brain is the most complex organ in the human body. Here are some mindblowing facts about how it works. The brain weighs about 3 pounds, and 73 percent of it is water. Although it represents just 2 percent of total body weight, the brain uses 20 percent of the body s oxygen to complete tasks. The average brain has 100 billion neurons that communicate messages to each other throughout the nervous system. It processes information at a speed of 260 mph. It s estimated that we have between 25,000 and 50,000 thoughts per day. Even during sleep, the brain continues to work. I hope you enjoy the following facts about this vegetable: Broccoli has been around for 2,000 years. The word broccoli comes from the Latin word brachium, which means branch. Broccoli contains phytochemicals, which help prevent cancer. Broccoli is a great source of vitamin C, vitamin K, fiber, calcium and iron. California produces 90 percent of the broccoli grown in the United States. The average American eats 4.5 pounds of broccoli every year. Broccoli grows best in temperatures between 65 and 75 degrees. Grand Rapids March Events The Grand Rapids Public Museum will be offering an event on Saturday, March 26, called Fashion & Tea. Learn about fashion, customs and culture from the Civil War Era into the 20th Century and explore the Museum s Education Collection of vintage clothing. The program begins in the Streets of Old Grand Rapids exhibition, which will transport guests back in time to the Victorian era. The program will continue on the Museum s second floor, where guests can indulge in sweet treats and tea while enjoying a visual display. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the facility on the day of the event. The annual Fred & Dorothy Fichter Butterflies are Blooming exhibition at Frederik Meijer Gardens is back! The exhibit will be offered from March 1-April 30. Come experience the largest temporary tropical butterfly exhibit in the nation! She was a Southern girl whose singing talent and down-home charm made her a star. Look back at the life of Dinah Shore. She was born Frances Rose Shore on March 1, 1917, in Winchester, Tenn. While attending Vanderbilt University, she began performing regularly on a Nashville radio station. Shore changed her name to Dinah, inspired by the title of a popular song. In the 1940s, she had a string of hit records. Her first No. 1 song was I ll Walk Alone, which was a popular World War II-era ballad. Her signature song was See the USA in Your Chevrolet, the jingle for her TV variety program, which ran from 1956 to For two decades, she hosted several TV talk shows, including Dinah! and Dinah s Place.
