Whigham 12th Martraze Battle, Owen Beall, Emily Hornsby, Josh Russell, Kilian Seymour, Harmony Smith, Mitch Watson 11th Talia Hallmon, Dasia Maples, Russell Sheppard, 10th Anayah Bryant, Nikeya Russell, Sarah Weaver The Pelham City School System does not discriminate on the basis of race, color or national origin, sex, or disability. Inside this issue: Athletes of Week 2 Baseball 2 Triple Threat 3 Baseball 3 Prom King/Queen 4 Best Dressed/New Coach 4 Prom 5-7 Cheyenne Brooks Signs with FAMU Wednesday was an exciting day for Cheyenne Brooks, as well as Pelham High School and the Pelham Community. Coach Ashley Cochran talked about Cheyenne s work ethic and diligence in training to be the best at pole vaulting. Cheyenne has been getting up early seven days a week and studying when not training, and it has paid off with a full scholarship to FAMU. Cheyenne says she chose FAMU because everyone is friendly, and it has both the athletic and academic atmosphere she desires. Coach Charlie Polhamus has been essential in getting Cheyenne ready for the next level, and certainly, without Cheyenne s mother s support none of this would have been possible. Cheyenne is the epitome of an athletic scholar, and PHS is proud to call her one of its own and wishes her well next year in Tallahassee at FAMU. The 2015 PHS Buzz Staff! It takes all of us to make Pelham City Schools The School System of Choice, where we are committed to educational excellence every day in every way. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter to keep up with all the latest news.
2 Will Wright, baseball player since the age of four, has been chosen for Athlete of the Week. Will is exceedingly devoted to the sport of baseball. To illustrate being a great teammate, Will uses effective communication while communicating with his teammates. Will says, You should know how to communicate with one another to recognize each other s weaknesses and to help on another improve on them. I am always exceptionally nervous before going up to bat, he states. To be successful in any game, Will plays for his teammates also. My teammates and I understand our goals and are committed to attaining them, declared Will. While playing baseball for several years, Will has improved in everything but mostly he has improved on hitting. Will believes in Babe Ruth s quote, Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game. Athletes of the Week Clifford Russell is one of the many known athletes at Pelham High School. Clifford has participated in football for six years, track for three years, and basketball for one year. While participating in a number of sports, Clifford says the most challenging thing for him overall is time management. You have to be able to manage your time well. You practice for hours and hours each day, on top of school, and spending time with friends and family, says Clifford. My team creates an environment in which people are comfortable in communicating, advocating positions, and taking actions, he states. Clifford says his teammates trust each other with their action which causes them to be successful in their games. Team work is the key in any team sport. Throughout a number of years, Clifford believes that he s improved on learning each game and learning about players around him. PHS Baseball The Hornets competed against the Seminole County Indians and the Early County Bobcats in a three game series. The Hornets swept both teams in each of the series, and the team is currently on a six game winning streak. The Hornets now control their own destiny and are one step closer to clinching a spot in the playoffs for this year. On April 21, 2015, our Hornets will be having their PHS Senior Night, and we encourage everyone to come out to support them as they play in their last home game. The Buzz Page 2
3 This week s best friends are JaJuan Frazier, Brianna Jones, and Roscoe Jones. They have been best friends since they were born. Straight out the womb, said Brianna. JaJuan said, I like how we can sit around and talk for days. They are always real with me and tell me how it is, Roscoe said. I like our bond and the love we have for each other. Brianna said, I like the overall bond. My family is my family and the love I have for them will never end! They enjoy laughing and talking, texting each other funny faces, singing, and just being in each other s presence. Their most memorable was the time Brianna and JaJuan kicked the door in on Roscoe while he was using the bathroom and also the time Brianna fell in the park when they were in Florida. We re inseparable, Brianna said; They re my family. When I hurt, we all hurt. If one is mad, we re all mad. They know me more than anyone else; they can tell when something is wrong, and they know how to cheer me up, said JaJuan. Brianna, JaJuan, and Roscoe all said the perfect day spent with each other would be just being with each other talking and laughing. I have no clue what I m going to do in college. They re my heart! said Brianna. Track On Tuesday April 14, 2015 the PHS track team competed in Day 1 of the Region Championship. 5 Prom 2015 Mystery Masquerade Saturday night was magical for the students of Pelham High School. The Hand Building was filled with decorations depicting a Mystery Masquerade, along with beautiful flowers, immaculate gowns, and classic tuxedos. Mrs. Hampton and Mrs. Jenkins, along with the members of the Junior Class Prom Committee, spent countless hours getting ready for Saturday night s Masquerade. PHS parents and the community came out in support of the Senior Walk with cameras and phones in hand and ready to take pictures of their special Senior. Dr. Boyd introduced each Senior, and the walk began. Afterward, the music played, and the students danced into the night. The Buzz Page 4
