2 A Dare by Lia Newman LHS class of 2014 Watch the unmoving track, daring you to run Hear the cheers of the crowd, the waiting and suspense Smell the sweet stench of sweat blowing from the stands Taste the adrenaline and nerve coursing through your veins Feel your legs pulse with motion and everything else drift away. 5 Practices 4:10-5:30pm Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays Two training sessions per practice Some athletes will be expected to practice at Lakeridge High for relays, starting blocks, and hurdles NO practices on Thursdays

6 What students should bring to practice Shorts or tights or light sweatpants Shirt- long or short sleeved, sweatshirt, rain jacket (be prepared for all types of weather) Running shoes (should be fairly new in the last 2-3 months) Full water bottle, plus extra water if needed (no place to fill up water during practice) Small snack to eat before practice

7 What students should NOT bring to practice Energy or other caffeinated drinks Candy, cookies, or other sweets Phones Spikes - unless at LHS

8 Practices- Your student should expect to: Plan ahead - two training sessions per practice Have a positive attitude Support teammates Improve throughout the season Practice, rain or shine (only exception is lightning) Try new events (especially 6th graders) Step in and help when needed Occasionally practice at Lakeridge High for relay handoffs, starting blocks, and hurdles

9 Gear Jersey - only for meets (issued by school) Shorts or running tights (you provide your own) Shoes- new-ish running shoes and possibly track spikes Rain jacket

10 Meets- what your student should expect ALL meets will be on Wednesdays this year Transportation is only TO the meet. Parents will need to ensure students have a ride home FROM the meet Athletes need to check out with one of the coaches before leaving the meet Bring a garbage bag to put school and track bags in to keep dry during the meet Meets are LONG-- water is not usually available at the meet. Bring extra. Meets are LONG-- bring a snack to eat after school and before the meet (no food on the bus). Bring something to eat AFTER the athlete is finished competing. Bring dry clothes to change into after the meet

11 Frequently Asked Questions What is the name of our league? Willamette River League (WRL), includes athletes from the following schools: Athey Creek, Gardiner, Hazelbrook, Kraxberger, Laurel Ridge, LOJ, LJHS, Ogden, Riverdale, Rosemont, Sherwood, Wood Where are our meets? Lake Oswego High, Lakeridge High, Oregon City (Pioneer Stadium), Rosemont Ridge Middle School, Tualatin High

12 How does my athlete know what events they are participating in for the meet? Athletes register with event coach the MONDAY BEFORE the meet 3 individual events & 1 relay 2 individual events & 2 relays Need to be practicing with the event coach before participating in the event (i.e. must be practicing with both high jump and sprints if they want to compete in those events) Need to discuss with event coach(es) High Jump - limited to 3 athletes per grade/gender 100m/200m - limited to 12 athletes per grade/gender

13 Does my child need track spikes? No, but they can be helpful for some of the events, such as: high jump 4x100 meter relay Hurdles Shorter sprint events, such as 100 and 200 meter races

14 What should I expect for the meets? Start 4:30pm (except the District Meet, which begins at 3:30pm) ending around 7:30-8:00pm All the track venues are different. Some have covered stadium seating (Lake Oswego High), uncovered stands (Lakeridge High) and just grass (Rosemont Ridge Middle School). Hint: use Google maps satellite view so you know what to prepare for. Recommend portable camping chairs or a blanket for Rosemont Ridge Stadium seats or a blanket are great for the aluminum stands at most other facilities Food can be terrible or scarce. Suggest bringing a picnic dinner for yourself and your student (for them to eat when the meet is over).

15 How do I know what time my student will compete? Meets are on a rolling schedule. Events are in the same order every meet, but start times are estimated. Best to arrive too early than miss their event! Listen for announcement - report to course clerk Often depends on how many teams are at the meet

17 Field Events: Long Jump*, High Jump, Discus, Shot Put Boys Long Jump: 6 th grade, 7 th grade, 8 th grade Girls Long Jump: 6 th grade, 7 th grade, 8 th grade High Jump: All girls followed by all boys Boys Shot Put: 7 th grade, 8 th grade, 6 th grade Girls Shot Put: 7 th grade, 8 th grade, 6 th grade Discus: 8 th gr. boys, 7 th gr. boys, 6 th gr. boys, 8 th gr. girls, 7 th gr. girls, 6 th gr. girls *Host schools with two long jump pits will offer one per gender throughout the meet All field events will be organized by grade and gender (with the exception of high jump). **Times are approximate. Please pay attention to the progress of the meet as events may take place earlier or later than posted times.

19 Anything else to expect for the meets? Parents should not be down on the track during meets Students who are not either warming up for an event or getting ready to compete should not be down on the track either Races with one athlete per lane will run in the following order: 6th girls, 7th girls, 8th girls, 6th boys, 7th boys, 8th boys. In longer races (800 & 1500), all athletes may be combined to expedite the meet process. Athletes will still only be placed according to their grade/classification and gender. Be prepared for all types of weather-- sun, rain, wind. The afternoon may be warm, but evenings get chilly

22 What if my student is injured? Encourage the athlete to talk with the coach Let them be the advocate Contact the line coach or event coach We encourage them to come to practice and continue to learn techniques and support teammates

23 District Meet Not all athletes will be able to participate Participation depends on attitude, effort and attendance in practice, as well as qualifying times and marks Coaches are limited to 2 athletes per gender per grade per event 3-800m & 1500m 1 - High Jump having met qualifying height

24 Meet of Champions (Middle School State Meet) May 24 at Corvallis High School Invitation only based on league/district meet results Depends on where they place overall in the state for middle school-- Is NOT separated by grade levels Mostly 8th graders, some 7th graders, rarely 6th graders Is an all-day meet, with qualifying heats in the morning and final heats in the afternoon

25 How can you help? Volunteer to drive athletes to practice at Lakeridge High (sprinters, relay, hurdlers)- need permission slip to drive other students Volunteer at one of our two home meets at Lakeridge High on May 2nd or May 9th Support your athlete with good nutrition and encouragement let us do the coaching!
