RHENISH NEWS For parents & daughters 08/09/2017 Rhenish Girls High School aims to provide its learners with an education of the highest quality and is committed to providing an environment that is conducive to effective teaching and learning. All learners, regardless of their intellectual abilities, social backgrounds and academic aspirations, are encouraged to develop their full potential, to strive for excellence in all they do, and to become responsible, caring and productive citizens. School Yearbook 2017 To purchase one of these, please pay the bursar R100 (either cash at the office or into the school account, reference: magazine/daughter sname+surname) Public Speaking On 30 August Rhenish held its internal round for the Rotary public speaking competition. The girls had to prepare speeches on a list of different topics and the winner of the Internal round proceeded to represent Rhenish at the external competition which was held on 6 September. The junior and senior winner respectively go through to the competition. The senior runner up was Yvonne Makwara and the winner Victoria Matthews and in the junior section the runner up was Jenna Tennant and the winner was Jessica Matthews. The Matthews sisters then went on to represent Rhenish at the Rotary public speaking competition on Wednesday. The standard of the competition was high and our girls did extremely well. They spoke with great passion and confidence and we were very proud to take 2 nd in the Senior Section and 3 rd in the Junior Section. Congratulations to both.

RHECO Retackles Rhenish Excitement fills the green air as well as the hearts of Rhecolites as RHECO teams up with a new recycling company, PRASA to help improve and further develop the recycling programme at Rhenish. The Municipality had indicated that they would no longer provide us with bags for recycling unless we used their preferred team for paper recycling. Mrs Arzul contacted them and Steven and Vuyo, members of PRASA, were quickly on site. Steven and Vuyo cycle to Rhenish every second week for a paper pick-up. Within less than a term RHECO has successfully partnered with the paper recycling association of South Africa to ensure every paper is recycled. Each class has also signed a declaration of intent committing to the paper recycling programme and we are happy to report that the girls have been co-operating excellently. Our wish is that our relationship with PRASA will continue to grow and help improve the environment of Rhenish. Brittany Kock Arbor Day On 1 September, Mrs Whelpton took ten Grade 10 learners on the Arbor Day Tree planting event. It took place at the Paradyskloof forest. We were the first to arrive and the last to leave. There were many schools present such as, Stellenbosch High, Makupula High, Franschhoek, Paul Roos and Stellenzicht High School. We were divided into groups and were taken to various stations where different activities were done. It was a fun way to mix with the other schools and get to know each other. We all had our face painted and took a lot of pictures. There was an inspiring speech done by a professor of Environmental conservation from the University of Stellenbosch. The best part was when we had to plant the trees. The mayor of Stellenbosch was also there and she helped plant the trees. The highlight of the day was the tree hugging event. One could also take home a "free tree" if you wanted to. It was a great day and experience that we will not easily forget. Lauren Cyster

Cultural and Service Awards 2017 On Wednesday 23 August the Annual Cultural and Service Awards function was held to recognise and reward the contribution of Rhenishers in these fields during Congratulations to all recipients of awards, certificates, half colours and full colours. In addition, it was awarded to her for her outstanding performances on Piano and Cello) Jamie Seas - the Cecily Cup for Progress in Music Chanté Daniels and Hannah van Houweninge shared the Mars Music Trophy for All Round Contribution to the Music Department in 2017 LC Camp Unity is strength when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved. - Mattie J. T. Stepanek Last weekend, the newly elected Learner Council for 2017/2018 took their first steps towards achieving this unity. We began our weekend with a workshop at hostel, led by Ms Conchar, in which we learned about the different leadership styles that each of us possess. Selfawareness is a key to success and during this session we learned about the strengths as well as the weaknesses of each style and how we can help one another improve. It was amazing to see that the strengths of one style perfectly compensated for the weaknesses of others. This confirmed the idea that a team needs to be diverse in leadership approaches in order to thrive. The morning was also spent defining the values that we as individuals live by and then developing a set of values that we as a LC body will be living by. This year we went to the beautiful High Africa campsite in Worcester. We were led through various physical activities throughout our stay, such as rock climbing. The aim of which was not to see who could get to the top the fastest but instead for us

to trust one another and communicate effectively. Firstly, the team members at the bottom had to provide support, advice and motivation to the person climbing and secondly, the person climbing had to listen to their team members and trust that they could see a climbing hold that the climber was unable to see. We spent hours in the conference centre at the campsite learning more about each other and we connected over the many things we had in common, including a multitude of mosquito bites. The important roles that we will now be playing in the school were explained to us in detail. Our love for Rhenish and eagerness to improve the school in any way we are able to were showcased during our lengthy sessions discussing ideas and strategising for our upcoming term. Winter Sports Awards Our term of office will be based not on achieving success for ourselves but instead will be focused on how we can significantly impact the lives of Rhenishers in the next year. On a personal note, I am extremely excited to be working with such an enthusiastic group of leaders. I cannot praise our Deputy Head Girl nearly enough. Ora shone as a natural leader throughout the camp and her loving personality is always shared with everyone. She has diligently been serving Rhenish since Grade 8 and I am very excited about the path that we will share in the next year. We hope that the Rhenish community is as ready for the year that lies ahead as we all are! Kelly Viljoen The Winter sporting season has drawn to an end and it is traditionally marked with the recognition of the achievement of the sportswomen at Rhenish with the Winter Sports Awards function. The players it is compulsory for all 1st team players and their parents, liaisons and coaches are invited to snacks and an award function in the Ebenezer Hall where they are addressed by a sporting personality and then the awards are handed out. Guest speaker at this year s event was Sunelle Barnard (SA Netball and SA Women Rugby 7s) Top awards in each of the sports were awarded to the following learners (we are not printing all of the awards awarded on the evening, just a selection of the top awards made): Squash Best Junior School Squash Player (Trophy) - Bree Mallam Best Senior School Squash Player (Trophy) - Kirsten Marnewick Hockey Honours (Represent South Africa in junior or senior team) Samantha Smuts SA U17A Julia Robb SA U16A Honours Re-award Monique Bartsch SA U18A Moya Smith SA U18B Most Promising Junior Hockey Player (Trophy) Julia Robb

They are 3 of 14 youngsters from 6 schools in Cape Town that form part of a team of Cape Town Ambassadors, committed to making a difference in the lives of others by being advocates for learning, disability awareness and inclusion. Athletics Sponsor Needed In our continuing effort to improve the standard of athletics at Rhenish and provide the girls with numerous occasions to participate, we have organized a new Inter Schools athletics meeting. This meeting, known as the Helderbosch meeting, will take place on Saturday, 14 October. Rhenish will team up with Paul Roos Gymnasium and will compete against Stellenbosch High School and Strand High School. All the participating schools are extremely committed to this event and believe it will benefit athletics at all the schools. However, since this meeting has only been organized during the last three months, none of the participating schools has budgeted for this event. We are therefore looking for any individual or company who would be willing to sponsor this meeting, or even just make a donation towards the cost of the day. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Any interested parties may contact Paul van der Hoven at paul.vanderhoven@rhenish.co.za to discuss your support or for further information.
