1 RHENISH NEWS For parents & daughters 26/04/2018 Rhenish Girls High School aims to provide its learners with an education of the highest quality and is committed to providing an environment that is conducive to effective teaching and learning. Important Notices 1. Winter Uniform: The girls are reminded that they are expected to return to school on 2 May in FULL WINTER UNIFORM. Please ensure that stockings are in good order and not laddered it is unsightly and a blight on the Rhenish reputation to be seen in public in that state. It is always a good idea to have a couple of extra pairs in the cupboard for emergencies! 2. Procedure for checking out an ill child: A reminder please: Girls are to come to the office FIRST if/when they are not feeling well. Mrs Le Riche/Mrs Hershaw will make a decision about the seriousness of the situation and determine whether or not it warrants calling the parents to fetch the learner. Learners will THEN be given permission to call their parents to collect them. It is happening too frequently that parents arrive having received a call from their daughter to collect them and the office is totally unaware of the situation. 3. Lice It would seem that we need to be permanently on the prowl for these pests! Please check your daughter s hair and, if found, take the appropriate steps. Consult with your pharmacist if necessary. Collegiate Derby What an exciting weekend of sport we had hosting our friends from Port Elizabeth. The buses rolled in just after lunch and Stellenbosch really was alive with parents and learners from Collegiate Girls High and Grey PE who were competing against Paul Roos Gymnasium. The sun was shining bright and the Stellenbosch Mountains lay picture perfect in the background. The atmosphere around the turf was inspiring and the girls felt that they were more than ready for the annual derby against Collegiate. Collegiate, who was ranked 6th in the country at that stage, stepped onto the turf extremely confident and their nippy forwards managed to put one in the box within the first 4 minutes of the match. Rhenish, shortly afterwards, was awarded a short corner and managed to equalize when Julia Robb picked up the rebound off the goalies pads after a very good drag flick by Lara Stevens. Collegiate, who was determined to win the match, scored their second field goal while the Rhenish

3 crowd was still celebrating theirs. A third goal was scored by Collegiate within minutes of their second and it was predicted that it was going to be a very high scoring game, with the odds not our favour. Rhenish, however, did not give up and by half time the score was 3-2. Neither teams scored during the second half. The Rhenish girls can be very proud of their performance. They stepped up their game after the first seven minutes and dominated the second half. The Collegiate coach commented that they had played twenty matches already this season and that Rhenish had been their strongest opposition thus far. A very successful season is predicted. The Rhenish crowd was absolutely amazing and the team would like to use this opportunity to thank them for their support. Samantha Smuts 2 nd Team What an exciting weekend we all had! Our 2nd team have been preparing really hard for the last couple of weeks leading up to the Collegiate Derby and we were so proud of the game we played. We have an outstanding team of girls who are driven, hardworking and talented. gave it their all and executed everything learnt in our practices in the game. We are improving and learning a lot after each game and I am excited for the games yet to come in the season. Onwards and upwards together! Olivia van Hoogstraten, Captain U14B On Saturday our game against Collegiate U14 B team was lost 4-0. Our team put up a great fight against a strong opponent. We worked very well as a team. Emma Lietbetter was our Girl of The Match. Emma deserved this title this week because she played a great game and gave her all right to the very end. Our Clown of the Week was Teagan Steyn her on field tactics kept our spirits high. We have a few details to work on, mostly concerning the way we communicate to one another, but other than that we are a very strong team and we all work very well together. Nicole Vermeulen, captain The end score was 1-0 to our opponents, which Collegiate popped in their pocket after a shorty. However, we were not discouraged, actually the opposite. We gave it our all and never gave up. It is such a privilege to be part of this team! Alexa De Villiers, captain U16A Our match against Collegiate was absolutely brilliant! I was so proud of how we fought and persevered until the end. Every time they scored a goal putting them in the winning position, we came back making it a tie. Although the final score was 3-2, in my eyes it was a win because of the way the girls played with all their heart. They

4 Netball 1 st Team The 1 st team walked away from their match against Collegiate on Saturday with a strong win. It was definitely a game that kept everyone on their toes. We were behind in the first quarter but managed to get our heads into the game with each passing quarter. We could not have done it without the support from our teachers and especially our girls. Nicole Smithdorf, captain 2 nd Team Second team had a successful match against Colliegate and won We were all very focused and we wer ready to win the match which is exactly what we did. As a team we would also like to congratulate all of the other teams that took part whether they won or lost, as long as they did their best. Tiffany Gordon U14A (won against Collegiate) We had so much fun and we enjoyed our first Collegiate derby. We finally won a match - this was our first win as a team. It was amazing and we enjoyed every moment. We learned from previous matches and we have improved. We are determined to carry on doing our best and improving. This match is definitely one to remember. Yolisa Tile Blanket Project The Cold Wet Whether seems to have arrived and you can, I am sure, appreciate the need for the blankets that our squares will go towards making. The Rhenish community is hard at work knitting squares. Seen here are one of our Grade 8s s grannies, Mrs Ehlers and Mrs Norton, proudly showing off some of the squares they have already knitted. How is your knitting going send us some of your pictures so that we can share your progress. Let s see if we can beat our previous record of blankets knitted.

6 First Aid Course The First Aid Course took place during the April holidays. I am sure that for most of the girls, including me, it was a struggle to get out of bed each morning. I even spent a lot of time contemplating why I had signed up to do it, as it was at school and during the holidays. This was not the best combination. However, with each passing day the load became more bearable. As we started learning things like how to do CPR and how to treat trauma casualties, I found that all of us really started to enjoy the course. It became extremely interesting and even the fact that we had to write tests each day did not lower our spirits. This was mainly because our facilitators made the lessons fun by adding interesting stories to help us remember things. During the course of the week we did many, many things that ranged from learning how and when to do CPR, how to bandage various wounds and even how to deliver a baby. Our facilitators managed to teach many things in the short amount of time that we had to complete the course. The week quickly started to fly by and before we knew it, it was Saturday (the last day of the course). There was tension in the air as everywhere you looked, people were trying to look over their notes just one more time before we wrote our final test. This was a big one. After our test the fun began as we had to create our own scenarios that had a casualty and then have first aiders analyse the patients. This really was interesting as you could hear laughter and excited chatter as the groups decided what to do for their scenario. Everyone came up with amazing ideas such as having to move a casualty onto a spinal board and even how to splint a broken bone. All in all, the course was a lot of fun and I would definitely recommend it as a life skill. It is interesting and it enriches your knowledge of how to help others, both physically and psychologically. There really is something of interest to everyone in this course because it touches on so many great topics. This course was made possible through a lot of planning. For this we are grateful to Mrs de Jongh for putting in the time and effort to organise the course, as well as the facilitators from Dynamikos who taught us. Minethia Markman Book Day You can t buy happiness, but you can buy books and that s kind of the same thing Books, games and a little reward in the end. The girls couldn t wait to start with the games that awaited them. Many showed up to come celebrate National Book Day which took place in the library. There were so many girls excited to take part in the games and many did not realize how many books there are housed in our very own library. It was a fun day for everyone. The librarians enjoyed helping out with the games and the brownies we shared at the end just topped off the experience. Danielle Foster

7 Living Science Life Sciences Learners visit 2 Oceans Aquarium Even if you never have the chance to see or touch the ocean, the ocean touches you with every breath you take, every drop of water you drink, every bite you consume. Everyone, everywhere is inextricably connected to and utterly dependent upon the existence of the sea - Sylvia Earle There we were with all this knowledge about all these different sea creatures, waiting to see what the day held for us. We were split into groups and each class had the opportunity to gain some valuable information about the ocean and the life forms we would find there. Armed with this knowledge we then ventured into the aquarium for the day. For most of us, what became immediately and glaringly obvious, was how little we actually knew about the ocean. The day was filled with weird and wonderful new fish, many, many pictures taken inside the Nemo and jellyfish tanks, the feeding of the adorable penguins and the whole experience was topped off with the dive feed held in the big tank at the aquarium. Seeing something like that live was so much more valuable than watching a video on a screen. We left not only with more knowledge, but with a genuine appreciation for our ocean s wildlife. Danielle Foster Chelsea Flower Show Congratulations to two Rhenish mums who will form part of the team heading for the Royal Horticultural Society s Chelsea Flower Show, which takes place in the gardens of Chelsea s Royal Hospital in London from 22 May to 26 May. Rentia Hobbs and Annalie Skein are the Rhenish mums pictured 3 rd and 4 th here with the model of the South African entry.
