1 Daily Announcement Wednesday, May 21, th Grade Seahawks - this announcement is for you! Our 8 th Grade Later! Lunch has moved to Thursday, June 5! On this day, you will receive your yearbook and a t-shirt from the Scoggins PTA, and will take your lunch to the courtyard for both B and C lunches. All 8th graders will have the opportunity to sign yearbooks and t-shirts and get to enjoy a longer lunch at the same time. What a great way to begin to say "Later!" to Scoggins Middle School, and "Hello!" to Independence High School! See you on June 5th, 8th Grade Seahawks! 6th and 7th Grade Seahawks - your Yearbook Signing opportunity will be during 8th period on Thursday, June 5 th! All 6th Graders will meet in the Practice Gym, and 7th Graders will meet in the Competition Gym, to sign each other's yearbooks. Please plan to bring a Sharpie marker or pen with you that day! Can't wait for you to see the awesome Scoggins yearbook this year! Today we have Fluorescent Glow art show from 3:35-4:45pm. Come and see our art students amazing artwork that glows in the black light! Hope to see you today in our Art classroom! Tomorrow, May 22, we will conduct our Safety Day Practice. We will practice our fire and tornado drills and our lockdown procedures. If it is raining, we will only practice our tornado and lockdown drills at this time. All students should plan to bring a book or reading material with them to their 8 th period class because we will have DEAR time once our drills are completed. As always, it is very important that all Seahawks are quiet during our drills and listening to instructions carefully. We have always done a great job with our drills in the past, so let s continue to work together to keep everyone at Scoggins safe! As always, it is very important that you put your best effort into these lessons and come away with some insight and ideas that you can use to make our school even better for everyone.
2 Trinity Vivona competed in the girl s Frisco ISD District tennis tournament yesterday at Frisco High School. Trinity continued her dominant play and had a clean sweep in the tournament. She defeated all three of her opponents 18-0 to win the girls singles district championship. Trinity went undefeated in district this season. Coach Cannida is very proud of her effort and hard work, and wants to congratulate Trinity on an outstanding season. Tuesday, May 20, 2014 Tomorrow morning the book club will be meeting in the library at 7:55. The Buy One Get One Free book fair will be held in the library this Thursday and Friday so you can stock up on some great books for summer reading. It will be open from 8-4, so please bring your money and come shop! Students this Wednesday, during our activity period, we will have our final Olweus Class Meeting lesson for this year. As always, it is very important that you put your best effort into these lessons and come away with some insight and ideas that you can use to make our school even better for everyone. Attention, Seahawks! Scoggins annual Honors Night will be held on Tuesday, May 27, at 6 PM in the Heritage High School auditorium. This coming Monday, May 19 th, our 7 th grade Pre-AP Math students will be taking their CBE assessment, and the bells will be off throughout the first half of the day.
3 ALL seventh graders, even those not testing, will need to check the lists that are posted at the end of the seventh grade hallway so they ll know ahead of time which room to report to on Monday morning. For those who are testing, please remember to: Get a good night s sleep the night before the test; Eat a good breakfast. We will be providing a juice and muffin for those taking this test, but that may not be enough to fill you up; Leave cell phones and other electronic devices at home or in your lockerand please make sure they re turned off; and Bring a book to read when you have completed the test. Monday, May 12, 2014 Last week, the Scoggins Philharmonic and Beginner Orchestras went to Sandy Lake to compete in the annual Orchestra Fun Fest. The Philharmonic Orchestra received straight superior ratings from all three judges. Way to go Philharmonic Orchestra! The Beginner Orchestra also received straight superior ratings from all three judges, and the beginner orchestra also won the most outstanding orchestra award! Way to go Beginner Orchestra! Congratulations to the 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grade ART students who participated in the Visual Art Scholastic Event the ART UIL! All 14 students have received the highest ratings of 3 and 4. Total they brought home 12 medals! Special congrats goes to Chloe Sawyer who won the best drawing award in the 6 th grade division. Congratulations to the 7 th grade girls soccer team on their win versus the Celina Bobcats. Despite being stuck in a bus for over an hour on lightning delay, these girls came out with a flash. Monday, May 05, 2014 This is a reminder that our Athletic Parent Meeting for incoming 7th & 8th Grade Boys and Girls will be held tomorrow evening, May 6th at 6pm in the cafeteria. All incoming athletes and parents are encouraged to be there. This past weekend your Seahawks competed in the 2nd Annual FISD Robotics Competition at Hunt Middle School. Team members were Patrick Dimichele and Matthew Goff. They competed with grit and determination against the other teams. Friday, May 02, 2014 Attention all Academic Pentathlon Team Members. The official state results are in and Scoggins Middle School did VERY well. The Scoggins 7 th Grade Team took 5 th place in the Frisco District and 21 st in the state! And our 8 th Grade Team took 8 th place in the Frisco District and 37 th in the state! Again, Congratulations to 7 th grader Ryan Bence for earning 2 nd place medals in Math, Science, and Social Studies. Way to go! Last night the Lady Seahawks took on the Griffin Gators in soccer. The 7 th grade girls fought hard but came up short of a win. The girls showed determination and heart as they gave everything they had until the last seconds of the game. The 8 th grade girls beat the Gators in a penalty kick shootout which had everyone on the edge of their seats. Awesome job to both teams. On May 1 st, Scoggins Middle School is taking part in the nation s largest and most ambitious bullying rally ever attempted, The Million T- Shirt March Against Bullying. This is our second year to participate in this event, and last year was such a success, that we are going to participate again this year! We hope to be part of more than one million people nationwide, all wearing the same anti-bullying t-shirt. We are asking students to wear their anti-bullying shirt if they purchased one or a white t-shirt. This is also an attempt to set a Guinness World Record of The Most People Wearing the Same Shirt on the Same Day. We will be taking a school-wide picture in the gym, so it is important that everyone have a white t-shirt! We will have warm-ups and activities throughout the day relating to bullying prevention. Our school day will conclude with an assembly from approximately 2-3:30 in our gym. Our afternoon will feature guest speakers and a faculty vs. student basketball game. The basketball game is a reward for our students who participated in the Scoggins Reading Challenge. Congratulations to our 6 th grade class who won the Challenge. Get ready for an informative and fun filled afternoon this Thursday. Last night the Scoggins boys soccer teams faced a talented Griffin Middle School. The seventh and eight grade teams played in windy conditions. The 7th
9 grade boys had the game very tight at half time but were not able to hold on in the end. 7th grade had two goalies as players of the game, Harrison Longoria had several amazing saves in his first start as goalie and Brenden Manns had a penalty kick save in goal. 8th grade fought with more enthusiasm and pure physical play than they have shown all season but were overmatched in the end. 8th grade players of the game were Drake Mitchell and Trevor Dobrinski. Every year all art students participate in the Butterfly Festival Art Contest organized by the Emily Ann Theater and Gardens in Wimberley, Texas. This year we have two 8 th grade winners in the Fantasy division: Matthew Melendez received the first place and Trinity Vivona was awarded second place. Congratulations to Matthew and Trinity! Way to go Seahawks! Last night the Scoggins boys soccer teams faced Fowler Middle School. The seventh and eight grade teams played in warm conditions. Both games ended in defeat with exhausted players. 7th grade had two defensive players of the game, goal keeper, Joseph Miller and Harrison Longoria. 8th grade players of the game were Connor Highfield and Nick Reyes. Last night the Lady Seahawks soccer team took on the Fowler Falcons. Both teams fought hard but came up short of a victory. The 7 th Grade team showed great determination as they kept fighting all game and kept pushing for goals. The 8 th Grade team bounced back from last week and showed everyone in the stands what Seahawk Pride really looks like. Coach Mackie and Coach Castleberry are extremely proud of their efforts this week. Keep it up girls. In boys doubles play Ben Uzeil and Connor Krodel came away with a 6-3 victory. In girls double Parker Shipley, Emma Clark, Lillian Haney and Ashley Zoltowski won in a no contest. In singles play Trinity Vivona won 7-5 to finish district play undefeated. Ashley Zoltowski won 6-1 in an inner squad match. Emma Clark just came up short in her match but showed major improvement. Coach Cannida is proud of all the players and their hard work. Attention, all 8th Grade Seahawks - the 8th Grade House Team Challenge is coming soon! Tomorrow, April 25, during 8th period is Draft Day for each House Team. The 7 th grade team was tied through the end of regulation time and went to penalty kicks. Outstanding job from these ladies as we went through 11 kickers to determine a winner. The 8 th grade team showed great heart and class as they fought until the end. They showed Coach Mackie and Coach Castleberry their true passion for the game. Katie Holmes got 6th Place in the Shot Put with a throw of 29ft. and 10 inches Arianna Mena got 6th place in the 400 Meter Run with a time of 1:07 Rebekah Niebruegge got 3 rd place in the 800 Meter Run with a time of 2:36 Taylor Calhoun got 2nd Place in the Discus Throw with a throw of 81 ft. and 3 inches AND.. Josilyn Kispert got 1st place in the (Mile) 1600 Meter Run with a time of 5:55! All the coaches are so proud of how well ALL of our girls did this Track Season!
