2 Remembrance Day Service On 11 November people all around the world observe Remembrance Day. Remembrance Day is a day to honour the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and of civilians in times of war, specifically since the First World War. This year marks 100 years since WW1. In solidarity, St Charles College has continued in this custom setting aside the business of the day to remember and honour the fallen. We were fortunate to have members of the SA legion join us this year. A special thanks to them for kindly supplying the poppies. Our newly elected Head Boy, Kyle Reid, addressed the Chapel regarding the significance of the day, the sacrifice of the brave men and women around the world who gave their lives in war. The schools A-Capella group then took the stage, singing an inspired version of The Parting Glass, a traditional Irish and Scottish folk song, echoing the inevitably of death and a final farewell. At occasions such as these two bugle calls are played, The Last post and The Reveille. The Last post is a call to remember those who have been killed in war, while The Reveille marks the beginning of each day to wake up soldiers. The two tunes symbolize the sunset and sunrise respectively, and in the context of this occasion they symbolize death but more importantly a promise of resurrection. 3 Saints Sport As we draw towards the close of Senior School sport for 2018, there have been a number of boys achieving at a high level and recently receiving accolades: We wish Matthew Sates all the best as he travels to Singapore on Sunday for the final World Cup Swimming Meet. Wessly Madhevere has been selected for the Zimbabwe U19 cricket team to play in the Momentum Cup during December. Well done to Nkosinathi Dlamini who has been selected for the South African U16 basketball team. Nathaniel Benjamin received Honours for cricket this week, following his KwaZulu-Natal Inland U19 selection. Jason Login and Humphrey van der Merwe have been selected for the Kingsmead Mynahs U17 cricket team. Community Cricket Day We are looking forward to the Saints Cricket Community Day in just over two weeks. Dads (and potentially some moms?) are given fair notice to start brushing up on their batting and bowling as we would like to fill the fields with dads and lads games on Saturday 24 November from 8:30am 11:30am. The programme can be found on the following page and includes boys and parents from Grade 0 through to matric, and a number of old boys who will be welcomed back onto the campus. All cricket teams are encouraged to enjoy an end-of-season lunch time braai around The Oval while the 1 st XI takes on our Old Boys Select XI.

5 Cricket vs Northwood Northwood played hosts to the SCC 1st XI on Saturday, 3 November. Northwood have been on a good run of form, beating Maritzburg College and Kearsney in their previous two games. St Charles College, however, had some time away from the game during half term and the rest certainly helped after a long season. Saints won the toss and opted to bat first. Northwood s bowling attack has given many top orders trouble this season and Saturday was no different with the visitors on the back foot almost immediately in their innings. Ill-discipline and poor shot selection against a swinging new ball saw Saints under pressure at 55 for 5 after 25 overs. Immediately after the break, the 6th wicket went down with just 64 on the board. Kian Channon, pushed up the order to number 8, then strode to the wicket and promptly hit his third ball straight over the bowlers head for a one bounce four. This was the start of an electrifying innings of 59 off 48 balls. He was aptly supported by Jason Login who continues his imperious form scoring yet another 50 off 73 balls, proving once again that he must be one of the most prolific run scorers in the province. Their partnership took the total to 150/7 in the 43rd over and essentially broke the spirit of the Northwood team. Saints batted out their 50 overs, and after their poor start, would have been happy to set Northwood a target of 190. Kian Channon and off spinner, Clive Madande, opened the bowling and almost sealed the victory for the Maritzburg side in their 12 over opening spell. Madande, 3 for 18 off 10 overs and Channon s, 6 overs, 1 for 13, had Northwoood in all sorts of trouble and they were never able to recover. Further brilliant bowling from Madhevere, 2 for 17, made sure Northwood never got close to the total, eventually losing out by 90 runs. In truth, the partnership between Channon and Login is what broke the camel s back and Northwood never recovered mentally to compete with the Saints bowling attack. St Charles College now looks forward to hosting Kearsney on their home turf for the final game of the season. A game they are looking forward to playing in front of their fellow Saints brothers. Last Saturday, Cameron Spangenberg and Travis Dutton played their 50 th game for the 1st XI. It is rare for a 50 th Cap to be handed out and mostly the milestone is reached late in a players matric year, however, Cameron is still in Grade 11 and we congratulate him on his Saints career thus far. Travis Dutton, currently in Grade 12, has stayed loyal and committed throughout his matric exams, and we applaud his ability to balance his commitments and he is a shining example to aspiring young Saints boys on how to finish well.

6 Basketball vs Northwood The conditions for Saturday s fixture were not what you would call perfect for an outdoor game 25km/h winds and blazing temperatures limited the tactics from both teams as outside shooting was simply impossible. With the teams shooting ability severely limited, the Saints team incorporated a number of presses to put Northwood under pressure and get some easy baskets off the turnovers. The tactic worked and St Charles College got off to a good start and never looked back. With full-court pressure being applied, the Saints were able to get layups and essentially take the wind out of play. On the defensive end, SCC controlled the key and forced Northwood to settle for long distance shots. Controlling the rebounds allowed the Saints to run out of the defensives sets and get easy looks in transition. Northwood are to be commended on their never-say-die attitude; however, it was the Saints that were clearly the superior team finishing 31 points to the good. The final game of the season sees St Charles College take on Kearsney at the SCC Indoor Centre. Prep Cricket News This past week saw a number of cricket fixtures cancelled due to inclement weather; however a handful of fixtures did manage to go ahead on Friday and Saturday. The U9B team had a good win against their Cowan House counterparts. The U9Bs batted first scoring 100 runs and then restricted their opposition to 75 runs to give the U9B team a 25 run victory. The U9A team beat Clifton Nottingham Road U9A team with a disciplined display of cricket. The SCC U9As restricted their opposition to 84, which included no extras and then chased down the score comfortably with Hlube Nkosi scoring 50 not out. The U10A side beat Clifton by 26 runs. The SCC boys made 141 for 8 in their allotted overs and then bowled their Clifton opponents out for 115 runs. The U11A team scored 167 for 8 with Covhan Baatjies making 30 runs. The Prep boys then bowled Clifton out for 119 with Shahil Maharaj taking 4 wickets for 23 runs. The U11A team won by 48 runs. The Prep Colts bowled Clifton out for 143 runs. Thando Ngcobo was the pick of the bowlers taking 3 wickets for 22 runs. The Colts boys then chased down the score to win by 4 wickets. Cival Rugbar top scored with 39 runs and Oliver Proudfoot contributed 32 not out. The Prep 1 st team batted first and scored 257 for 3 in their 45 overs. Matthew Urquhart top scored with 93 not out, Nathan Beaumont made 69 and Matthew Diemont chipped in with 45. The Saints boys then bowled out their Clifton Nottingham Road counterparts for 128 runs to give the Prep 1 st team a 129 run victory. 7 Mini Cricket at SCC On Saturday morning the Grade 1 and 2 boys played mini cricket matches on the St Charles College Oval. It was an exciting, fun-filled morning of mini cricket for the Junior Primary boys who showcased the skills they have been learning at practices. Well done to all our Saints Grade 1 and 2 cricket players. Outreach visit to PMB Children s Home Last Friday, 2 November, members of the Outreach Club visited the Pietermaritzburg Children s Home in Woodlands. As the boys stepped out into the bitter cold weather their hearts were immediately warmed at the Children s Home as the children who lived there welcomed us into their home. Even though our circumstances and lives may be vastly different, we were united by a common language, soccer. It was an awesome experience through which our schools brotherhood gained a new perspective, new friends and a chance to brighten up the cold day. Dylan McGuire and Davryn Naidoo (Grade 10)

8 Scrummies Swimathon Our boys in Scrummies had a fantastic morning swimming their hearts out at their Swimathon to help raise funds for Pink Drive and Singakwenza! The boys were also happy to welcome their special friends, the Grade R Eaglets from St John's D.S.G. for a morning of swimming. We are so proud of all our swimmers this week! Swim Chix Swimathon Some of our Grade 1 and 2 boys participated in the Swim Chix Swimathon for Cancer that took place on Friday evening, 2 November. Well done boys!
