1 COLLEGE NEWS No February 2016 Awards Ceremony At the College Awards Ceremony which took place last week, the achievements of the Grade 8s to 11s in 2015 were recognised and celebrated. The reason this ceremony takes place in 2016 is so that the entire year s work for 2015, including the final exams, can be included in the recognition. Representatives from the different Grades reviewed the year with their insightful and entertaining speeches. Congratulations go to all the award winners and to the presenters. 4 Parent Trustee Elections The Bridge House Educational Foundation (BHEF) ( the Trust ) is the owner of the school s fixed assets, including land and buildings and is responsible for financing all capital development projects. Bridge House School leases the premises and assets from the Trust in terms of a 50-year lease. The Trust is made up of a Founding Trustee, Independent Trustees and four Parent Trustees. The Trust Deed stipulates that two Parent Trustees should have children in Grade 5 or a lower Grade and two Parent Trustees should have children in Grade 6 or a higher Grade. After the terms of office of two of the Trustees, Mike Ratcliffe and Ken Kinsey-Quick, came to an end, nominations were called for parents to take up these positions. Mr Ratcliffe and Mr Kinsey-Quick chose to stand for re-election and two further nominations were received, Mr Warren Squires and Mr Mark Summers. There are thus two places available on the Trust and four parents standing which necessitated an election. The CVs of the above candidates, the voting procedures and proxy forms were ed to parents last week and again today (Friday 5 February). The election will take place in the College office on Tuesday 9 and Wednesday 10 February where each parent may vote in person (one parent, one vote, limited to two votes per family). However, if you are not able to vote in person, you may appoint a proxy to vote on your behalf. Proxy forms must be returned by 16h00 on Monday 8 February. 60 Minutes with the Heads In the interests of good and improving communication between school and parents, Mike Russell and Marc Barrow, Heads of the College and Prep respectively, will host the termly 60 Minutes with the Heads meeting, on Monday 29 February in the Theatre, from 08h00 to 09h00. In order to help the Heads prepare properly for this, please any questions or concerns (of a general nature) you may have, to PA@bridgehouse.org.za by or on Monday 22 February. The PA has kindly offered to bundle these into a folder and forward them to the Heads, who will then prepare responses to the matters raised, and out the agenda. Parents interested in these agenda items will be welcome to come along and participate in the conversation. Please note that any issues mailed to PA@bridgehouse after that closing date will not be on the agenda for this meeting, and will either be replied to in the interim, or carried over to the next 60 Minutes in the third term. The rules for 60 Minutes are simple: it's a constructive and collaborative initiative; matters raised and mailed through need to be of a general nature; if deemed a better option to do so, the Heads can respond directly by to any issues before the meeting; there will be honest and frank responses and discussion around the topics on the agenda; questions from the floor need to be only about the agenda issues: no "surprises" and no "general" please! giving the Heads some preparation time is simply so that if figures and data are required for an answer, or if someone else's expertise is needed, there is an opportunity to gather this and give full answers (and perhaps put it into a presentation of sorts); time: strictly 60 minutes for the forum, so that it's short and sharp and those attending can plan ahead.

This will give you the opportunity to meet other parents who are new to the school and to get to know the members of the Parents Association and the School management. Please RSVP, before Friday 19 February to Jenny Jones Swimathon The fun begins in the week beginning Monday 15 February. Please collect as many sponsors as you can and return the sponsorship forms to homeroom teachers before Wednesday 10 February to make this Swimathon the biggest success ever. 6 Sports Update ATHLETICS Another record for Erin Turner!! Congratulations to Erin Turner (Helios) who equalled the Girls U15 Long Jump record set by Ellen de Leeuw (Helios) in 2013 with a distance of 4.24m. We apologise for not picking this up on the score sheet before the Awards Evening last week! Erin was presented with her certificate in Assembly this morning. CRICKET 1 st XI VS PAARL GYMNASIUM 2 nd XI On Saturday, the 1st XI played in sweltering heat against a determined Paarl Gym side. After losing the toss we went in to bat and struggled to 112/10. After a tasty lunch we then took to the field. With some tight bowling and committed fielding we made the going tough for the hosts, but unfortunately they chased down the total for the loss of 6 wickets in the 25th over. Well done to John Rowett for carrying his bat and scoring 45 runs. CRICKET 1 st XI VS PAUL ROOS 2 ND XI On Tuesday, the boys played Paul Roos in a T20 match at Bridge House. After winning the toss and choosing to bat we scored 71/10 in 19 overs. Well done to Tom Pretorius for scoring 21 runs. We then took to the field to try and defend our score. We came close to completing the task with some quality bowling from James Boyes and Ryan Ellis, each of whom picked up 3 wickets. The end result was that we lost by 2 wickets. CRICKET U15A VS GROENDAL On Thursday, Bridge House U/15A played a 20-over match against Groendal U/15A. Bridge House was sent in to bat first and were bowled out for 136 in the 18 th over. Josh Riddle top-scored with 28 runs off 28 balls. Groendal then followed with the bat and after some tight bowling were bowled out for 46 runs. ByranDaniels was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4 wickets in two overs and conceding only 5 runs. Bridge House won the game by 90 runs. TENNIS The Girls U15A team (Kayleen Fortuin, Anaïs Colmant, Mia Phillips and Katja van Dyk) had a tough match against a very strong Paarl Girls High team on Friday 29 January. Although they gave it their best shot on a VERY hot Paarl afternoon, they lost 0-6. The Boys 1 st team (Xavier Keenan, Max Pawlowski, Tanay Solanki & James Graham) lost their fixture vs Boland Landbou on Monday 1 February 1-5. Well done to all the boys and congratulations to Xavier who won his singles match 8-6.
