During the week we had seven more club members visit the outing. One couple stayed in one of the rentals. Some of us took a tour ; it was very impressive. The lake was stocked the day we left, that s another way of saying the fishing was very slow. Big fish went to David Martinez. Betty and Larry Allen did a great job of organizing the event. The last Surf Fishing Challenge for 2017 was held on October 23. The weather was excellent. With a great breakfast at the Tip Top Meats, Hank Mabrey caught a 14 pound leopard shark, only to be 6 inches short of being legal. More to follow. The Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve is holding an opening day trout derby on November 4th and 5th, just before the SAE outing from November 5 through the 10th. Prizes will be given for tagged fish and the five largest trout caught during those two days. A number of SAE members plan to fish the derby. Please feel free to join us. Campsites may still be available. The Fall Feast will be held Monday, November 13 at the home of Jimmy Eghaneyan and Fariba Talebi. For those signed up to bring food, plan to feed 20. See or call Colleen Wilson at for more information. The annual bus trip to the Viejas Casino, November 30 has limited seats available. Call Barbara Gattuso at For a good time, the annual Awards Banquet is December 6 at the Rancho Bernardo Country Club. For questions contact Betty Allen, PLEASE NOTE: The November general meeting will be held November 3, due to Veterans Day and the Senior Center being closed. Take time to thank a veteran for the life we enjoy. Larry V. Jauert President So Many Fish...So Little Time
Programs NOVEMBER SPEAKER The speaker information is not available at this time. It will be announced via before the meeting. Ken Harrison Programs and Public Relations Fresh Water UPCOMING TRIPS Santee Lakes Nov 5-10 Monique and Tony Smock are the Wagon Masters. There will be a derby at the park on the 4 th and 5 th and they will be stocking 2,500 pounds of trout for this event, including some trophy trout. This RV outing is the closest to Escondido, so if you re not camping, you can still come visit for the day and join us for dinner if you d like. The Santee Lakes have easy walking access and first-class facilities. Call Monique Smock at for more information. Lake Yucaipa -January 18-25, 2018 Dave and Anitra Gehrke will be Wagon Master. They will be taking sign-ups at the November meeting. They will have handouts and maps of the campground. You will have to make your own reservations. The phone number is Lake Morena March 2018 Dates to determined. Lake Isabella March 21-27,2018 Bob and Priscilla Melton will be Wagon Masters for this outing. The Lake Isabella Fishing Derby is Friday March 24 Sunday March 26. That will give time to scout out the fishing areas. You will be able to sign up for the Derby online. The local KOA has agreed to give us a nice discount for both campsites and cabins. We will provide more details soon. LARGEST FISH 2017 Class I: Cheryl Brandstrom 5 lb. 2.6 oz. Trout Class II: Larry Jauert 9 lb. 6 oz. Bass 2
Fresh Water (continued) TRIP REPORT Pinezanita, Oct We had 21 campers and several guests for this outing. Beautiful weather, great food, slow fishing. Lake had not been stocked for a month (of course they stocked the day we left). It was great having so many members come join us for the day. We were still lucky enough to land 22 fish, several over a pound. The derby winner was Dave Martinez with a nice 2lb 8.6oz Rainbow. John Testor was second with a 2lb 7.6oz trout. Congrat s guys. Thanks to our Wagon Masters, Larry and Betty Allen. They did a suburb job as always. Around the Campfire Hope to see you at Santee Lakes. There should be more and bigger fish. Bob Taylor Freshwater Vice President 3
Salt Water The fish are still biting strong. The 3/4 day boat San Diego out of Seaforth brought in 275 yellowfin and 28 dorado on 10/27, We are heading to Cabo on the 28 th. This picture is a 304# Yellowfin tuna caught last week at Gordo Banks. When you go fishing don't forget to take your large fish report with you and give a copy to me so you can be recognized and given a pin at the meeting. The deadline to turn in reports to count this year was November1, so lets get started on next year. It's been an incredible fishing year. LARGE FISH 2017 Class 1 Class 2 Jim Reeser 11.11# yellowtail Steve Palmer 141.3# Bluefin Tuna SURF FISHING Report by Don Continelli The final surf fishing tournament event was held on Monday, 10/23/17 at North Pinto State Beach. We had 15 competitors trying to knock Don Continelli out of the tournament leader spot. Henry Skaja almost did when he landed a 14lb 2oz Leopard Shark. Unfortunately, it was 30" long and short of the legal limited of 36" and couldn't be counted. So here are the official standings: Our leader is Don Continelli with an 11oz. Barred Surfperch. Cheryl Brandstrom is second with her 9oz. Sculpin caught at San Onofre, followed by Bill Modi's 7 oz. Corbina and Jim Stevenson's 7oz Barred Surfperch. The highlight of the tournament was Cheryl's Sculpin. This species is normally found in deeper water. Good job Cheryl. Our first surf fishing tournament was a great success. If you have any suggestions that you feel will make next year's tournament even better send them to our tournament co-chairmen, Ken Harrison and Don Continelli. SURF FISH 2017 Class I: Don Continelli - 11oz Barred Surfperch Barbara Gattuso Salt Water Vice President 4

Community Events ANNUAL ESCONDIDO TROUT DERBY The City of Escondido trout derby will be held Friday, December 1 st to Sunday December 3 rd. This threeday derby will include having the Kiddy Ponds for Saturday and Sunday. That means we will need some additional help while the Kiddy Ponds are open. I will be taking signups at our November meeting, or you can call me at home, so please check your schedule and signup to help. We have two shifts each day so try to come up to the lake and give us a hand. We will need some help weighing fish, filling out entry forms, taking photos and help with the Kiddy Ponds. I know once you help at this event you will enjoy the camaraderie and the day at the lake. Each angler who volunteers to help at this event will receive a boat rental and two fishing permits, in addition the Kiwanis will provide a free BBQ lunch. Thanks for volunteering everyone. Remember we ll be assisting at the Kiddy Ponds on Saturday and Sunday, which is a fun and gratifying experience. Thanks again for supporting our Community Events. Hope to see you at our next meeting. Tony Smock Community Events Apparel Sunshine Senior Angler shopping/utility bags are still available for $5.50. Ray Bevens fell and broke his hip, but we hear is back home and doing better. Other than that, October was pretty quiet. Cards were sent to Ray and to John Duke for the loss of his brother. There are also discounted prices on all items with the Club s previous logo.
