1 October 2010 SENIOR ANGLERS OF ESCONDIDO Celebrating 35 years HOOK LINE AND SINKER Volume I Issue OFFICERS PRESIDENT S PERSPECTIVE e re into October and it feels more like mid summer, 112 degrees in W Escondido last week! I m really looking forward to the Lake Cuyamaca campout later this month. But before that we have the Turkey Fry at Lake Dixon on October 6th and our General Meeting the following week. Both events make October a special month. You won t want to miss either of them. Our time in the Eastern Sierra s last month turned into a real vacation with additional time after the June Lake trip exploring the Mammoth Area and the Twin Lakes region around Bridgeport. Each area had great fishing, beautiful scenery and perfect weather. My thanks to Vice-President Barbara for taking over the Meetings in September. Please review the following information and act upon it if it applies to you. 1. Dues ($15) for next year will be collected at the General Meetings in 2. October and November, at Lake Cuyamaca, and at the Christmas Party. If not paid by then you become delinquent and will need to pay $ If you did not get your picture in the directory this year, or want a new one, they will be taken at the same locations as #1. You can alternatively submit one of your own. 3. Members of the Board of Directors need to bring in their Plaques to the October Board meeting. November 1st is the deadline for turning in your largest fish report to the appropriate Vice-President. 5. The Lady Angler of the Year name needs to be submitted by Nov.1 to me. She is selected by the prior 3 recipients of this award. 6. 2 HOOKLINE AND SINKER Page 2 MEET OUR MEMBERS Don Hunter By: Dave Gehrke Don and Wendy Hunter have been members of the Senior Anglers since Dave: You ve been a member of the Anglers for close to a decade. How did you first hear about the Escondido Senior Anglers living in Oceanside? Don: We are neighbors of David Martinez. Need I say more? Dave: Have you always enjoyed fishing? Don: I grew up near Abilene, Texas. We had a large extended family in the area and they would gather together to go catfishing in the local streams and lakes. It was an exciting time for me. To this day catfish is my favorite fish to eat. Dave: Abilene is a long way from San Diego. Don: My folks moved to Southern California in 1957 when I was still in high school. After graduation I took a job with the Edison Co. I stayed with the company until I retired. I worked in many parts of the state. We wanted to be close to the ocean where it is cool and beautiful. Dave: How did you meet Wendy? Don: We both have 2 sons from prior marriages. They went to the same school and Cub Scout troop. I was the Webelos leader and she was my assistant. It s been love ever since. Dave: What are some of your favorite lakes? Don: Shaver and Huntington rank high in the Western Sierras. I also like Big Bear in the South. The June loop lakes rank high in the Eastern Sierras. The club introduced us to many additional Southern California lakes, all of which I enjoy. We purchased our 5 th wheel after we joined the Anglers. Prior to that it was tent camping. Dave: Besides fishing, what do you like to do? Don: Family is number one. All of our four sons are married and live in Southern California along with our two grandkids. Both of our Mothers also lived in Southern California. I also enjoy gardening and nature in general. Dave: How can our club improve? Don: I would like to see even more community involvement. A couple of ideas would include cleaning up the shoreline of a local lake or possibly adopt a stretch of highway to keep clean. I m proud of the things that we already do. Dave: And we are so pleased to have you as an active member of the Anglers.

Our new website give us more opportunities to promote our Club and solicit new Sponsors, an online alternative to reach many local businesses and citizens. A Sponsor's donation will allow it's business, to have 1 year of promotion on our website Sponsor page and show their business participation. We ask all club members to solicit new club Sponsors. You can print a self explainable "Sponsors Welcome Flyer" off the website. Using the flyer, just pick up a new Sponsor's business card and monetary donation, return it to the club's president Dave or Roy/director of public relations. 5 HOOKLINE AND SINKER September 2010 Fresh Water Report Pine Cliff/June Lake As hoped for, our trip to Pine Cliff/June Lake was a great one. A little cold and damp the first day, but that was just to keep everyone around to help set up. For the rest of the week, the weather was great. Even trips to higher elevation lakes only needed a jacket in the mornings. The fishing was great too. Larry Allen and I had limits in less than an hour at Grant Lake the first morning. There were limits for 10 of 13 guys that day (1 guy didn't fish). Overall there were over 220 trout caught, the biggest by Warren Estes. A whopping 5 lb. 7 oz's. As usual the food was great. We had steak one night, burgers another, but I think the favorite was the "breakfast for dinner". Thanks ladies for the excellent job. Dave Gehrke brought a game his son made him called "Washers". Basically you toss these large washers at board with barely larger holes for points. Dave got up a tournament of singles and partners in which almost every participated. It messed up our poker games as people were busy tossing or watching others throw. Bottom line, don't put any money up against the Martineau's when the next tournament comes up. Norm won the singles, he and Kathy won the doubles. The ladies had a good time sewing, made some beautiful quilts. They also did a lot of hiking. They found interesting things on their hikes. Ask them about it. FRESH WATER Bob Taylor, Vice President Upcoming Trips Page 5 Oct Pinezanita/Lake Cuyamaca Larry and Betty Allen will be leading this trip. Contact them if you would like to attend. I'm sure they can work you in. If you aren't planning to attend, consider a day trip. It's only a short drive (about 45 miles from Escondido). It is a great campground and the fishing has been consistently good there. Nov. 1-5 Lake Hemet This is our last outing of the year. It is another reasonably close spot. Warren and Nat Estes are Wagon Masters. Contact them for details if you are interested in going. Pine Cliff/June Lake September 2010 AL and Lois Ashuckian Nat Estes, Karen Taylor Betty Allen BIG FISH I received a "Class 2" report from Ron Casapulla. He caught a 30 lb. 6 HOOKLINE AND SINKER SALT WATER Barbara Gattuso, Vice President SEPTEMBER SALTWATER REPORT Page 6 Hi Everyone, We have a 1 1/2 day trip to Colnett / Mexican coast / offshore tuna (if there is any around) planned for November 12Th-14Th on the Dominator. We will leave on Friday evening Nov 12Th, fish from sunrise until dark on the Saturday the 13Th and return early Sunday morning the 14Th. This will most likely be a rockcod trip although the same trip last year gave up 40 yellow fin tuna and 100 red rock cod. As you all know the tuna situation this year is not the same as it was a year ago so it will probably be a bottom fishing trip. This trip is limited to 16 anglers and the cost is $240 including meals. It does not include Mexican permits which are available on the boat if you do not have one. We also have an overnight trip for shallow water rock cod planned for Dec on the Dominator. It is also limited to 16 anglers. We will leave Sunday evening the 26Th, fish all day the 27Th and return that night. The cost is $160 and includes all meals. Mexican permits will be sold on the boat for anyone that does not have one. 7 Join us for our trip to Viejas Casino on Wednesday November 17th. The slots are loose and the cards are friendly. Besides games there is great shopping at their outlet mall and wonderful food from their buffet. Invite all of your friends and neighbors to join us for the fun. We all had a great time last year. We will have signups at the October 15th meeting. Bring your $11. This includes the bus ride and a tip for the driver. If we get enough participants we get the $10 back to the club.
