There is still time to have fresh tuna on your table. We just returned from Lake Cuyamaca where club members experienced a rare phenomenon, they felt chilled and actually cold!! The fishing was challenging as the scheduled trout stocking was delayed a week, (just as we were leaving). Timing is everything!!! John Tester caught the largest fish. Ask him about his secret bass bait. The evening meals were very tasty and the campfire conversations were enjoyed by all. A new member, Don Peterson joined us and we look forward to seeing him at future outings. Thanks again to Betty and Larry Allen for organizing and all their work for our wonderful time together. The club has numerous activities coming up: Camping at Lake Hemet, the Awards Banquet on December 2 nd and the Viejas outing on December 16 th. Our club elections will occur at our November 13 th meeting and the new board will be installed at our Awards Banquet and Holiday Party. Hope to see everyone at these events and have a wonderful Thanksgiving! 2 HOOK LINE AND SINKER NOVEMBER 2015 PROGRAM NOVEMBER SPEAKER Our November guest speaker will be Bill Varney, "Fish the Surf" author and expert in surf fishing techniques. Bill conducts symposiums and work-shops up and down the southern California coastline. Here is a chance to hear his experience face to face, on reading the surf and how to fish the tide. JANUARY PROGRAM There will not be a general meeting in December, however the January 2016 meeting will start off our year with a Escondido Senior Angler's 2015 Photo Story, starring you, by our own Ron Parker. These promise to be two highlight programs so plan on attending and enjoying them with us all. FRESH WATER Dick Montague Program Director LAKE CUYAMACA/PINEZANITA CAMPOUT A total of 9 RV s made the trip. Larry and Betty Allen hosted the outing with Jim Stevenson assisting. The food was outstanding as always. On the you re on your own night a Mexican restaurant was attended by all 15 campers. (Good meal) Di Eight fishermen entered the 4 day derby. Overall the fishing was slow. The daily winners included: Larry Jauert, Larry Allen, John Tester and Jim Stevenson, with the big fish, a 3#-6.4oz. Largemouth Bass caught by John Tester. The Winners Circle The lake was stocked the last day of the derby. (stocked fish usually don t bite the first day they are stocked). Interesting note: the newly stocked school of fish circled the lake together and in a clockwise motion. 2

3 HOOK LINE AND SINKER NOVEMBER 2015 FRESH WATER (CONT.) Some of the ladies sewed and the majority played a new card game called nickel-nickel. We welcomed a new club member, Don Peterson who joined in the activities. It rained a little one afternoon but other than that the weather was cool in the evenings and very comfortable during the day. A good time was enjoyed by all. UPCOMING TRIPS Lake Hemet Campground November 15 to 20 Carol and Ron Parker will be Wagon Masters, with the Taylors assisting. Only 77 miles from Escondido is a beautiful lake and we re going camping there. It will no doubt be chilly because it s only a few miles from Idyllwild and over 4,000 feet but that s what makes it so neat to see some real autumn weather. Also the campfires feel better (hot chocolate or a spot of brandy) and the trout seem to fight harder? Signups are being taken now so get your camper and fishing gear ready and join us for five days of fun and relaxation. It s still not too late to sign up so call: Ron & Carol or Bob & Karen to get the details. Lake Cahuilla/ Riverside County Regional Park January 18 to 23, 2016 Carmen and Tomas Martinez are the Wagon Masters, with Norma and Don Continelli assisting. Reservations can be made by calling or by using the internet, Be sure to let the wagon masters know that you have reservations. Lake Moreno February 21 to 26, 2016 Bob and Karen Taylor will be wagon masters, assistants, TBD. Sign-ups will begin at the November meeting. Make your own reservations by calling San Diego County Parks at or online at reservations.sdparks.org. Ask for senior discount. San Onofre Beach March 14-18, 2016 Cheryl Brandstrom will be the Wagon Master for this trip, which will include surf fishing. More information to follow. Lake Lopez April 10 to 17, 2016 David and Anitra Gehrke are the Wagon Masters with Bob and Priscilla Melton assisting. For reservations call and ask to be placed in the Quail area of the campgrounds. LARGE FISH FOR 2015 Class I..5lb. 1oz, Class II..6lb. 12oz. Large Fish Documentation forms are available on web site. (senioranglersofescondido.net) CLASS II OUTINGS (non-club sponsored) As soon as we receive the trout stocking schedule we will have it posted. 4 HOOK LINE AND SINKER NOVEMBER 2015 SALT WATER LOCAL FISHING Well, the fishing continues into the Fall, producing yellowtail, yellowfin, dorado and nice corbina in the surf. Farther north, the billfish bite is still on and as the water cools the bite is anticipated to be more aggressive. A 65 # wahoo was caught on an overnight boat out of H&M on 25# test line---unheard of!!! We have 2 three quarter day trips on the Chubasco next year. June 6 and July 11 and 1 all day trip August 1. Signups will be the first part of Our first Lobster Hooping is scheduled for Nov 2 on the Jig Strike. Hope those big bugs keep crawling. CLASS II (non-club sponsored) CABO TRIP Our Cabo trip was so much fun. We went into Cabo San Lucas and took a Zodiac to a beach and did snorkeling, paddle boarding and kayaking. The water was like a lake and the air and water temp quite warm. We caught a variety of fish and everyone who wanted to brought fish home. Gregg Gattuso won the largest fish cash prize with a 28.8# yellow fin Tuna and Paul Marx won the cash raffle of $ each. Brenda hooked into a nice Wahoo that said adios after a bird made a nest on her reel, but she did land a nice Dorado. 5 HOOK LINE AND SINKER NOVEMBER 2015 CLUB ACTIVITES FALL FEAST Our Fall Feast was a great success. Despite predictions of rain, we had great weather and a wonderful turn-out. The food plentiful and delicious. The Pumpkin Dessert contest was fun with lots of entries and three winners, although those that enjoyed them after dinner thought they were all winners! Thanks to all the members for donating crockpots of food for this event. It was amazing to see everyone helping to set up, run the food line, and clean up at the end. The Senior Anglers rule!! Special thanks to Marge Lovelady who so efficiently ran the White Elephant Sale. A Big Thank You to the Escondido Major Market supporting our event by donating three delicious turkeys! COMMUNITY EVENTS ESCONDIDO CITY TROUT DERBY The city Trout Derby that was scheduled for Saturday November the 7 th through Wednesday the 11 th which is Veterans Day has been postponed because the water is still too warm for trout. The new dates are Thursday December the 3 rd through Sunday December the 6 th. This four day derby will be supported by our Senior Anglers and as of now they plan on having the Kiddy Ponds for Saturday and Sunday. That means we will need some additional help while the Kiddy Ponds are open. I will be taking signups at our November meeting so please check your schedule and signup to help at the Escondido City Trout Derby. We have two shifts each day so try to come up to the lake and give us a hand. We will need some help in registering the anglers and fish, weighing fish, taking photos and also help with the Kiddy Ponds. I know once you help at this event you will enjoy the camaraderie and the day at the lake. In the past the anglers that worked this event received a free fishing and boating permit. I assume that we ll be rewarded with this again this year. Thanks for volunteering everyone. Remember we ll be assisting at the Kiddy Ponds on Saturday and Sunday which is a fun and gratifying experience. Thanks again for supporting our Community Events. Hope to see you at our next meeting.
